Call me crazy...
2006 Marlins = 2005 Isotopes. No way... Granted...Beinfest needs to make the "right" deals but the names I'm hearing sound great. Listen to the Ramps and RFerrys of the board...the right deals coupled with our young talent in the minors will put this team in a position to succeed for years to come. Okay, okay... 2005 Topes and Mudcats :thumbup . Starting at centerfield for YOUR Florida Marlins, number 23.... REGGIIIIIIIIIIIE ABERCROMBIE! Yes...now your talking!!! Where can I get my Reggie jersey??? :notworthy

Call me crazy...
but I am loving all this trade talk. I think this is exactly what this franchise needs - a nice cleaning (a good enema, if you will). I say we deal all the high priced vets and get an influx of young talent to go along with Cabs, Willis, Hermida, Vargas, Olson & Willingham. Beinfest will get top value in return ala Billy Beane...bring in the Crosby's, Swisher's, Harden's and Barton's of the world and we will be just fine. I am looking forward to 2006 and beyond. :thumbup

Does anybody have the Draft report cards
There was no signability issue. The players that were selected were high schoolers and underclassmen, who have options to signing. The team paid these players well to add to an already deep pitching corps. Marlins2003 and others pointed out a good reason for selecting all these pitchers, that pitching is a precious commodity (I don't think that's quite as true, the same needs for hitters are every bit as desperate) and teams are willing to trade for them. However in practice, as we've seen in recent trade negoations, our minor league pitching hasn't been too enticing to other clubs. You're point is valid. I was more or less referring to the team's passing on Hanson & Teagarden.

Plus, given our organizational depth (and lack thereof in some positions) I would have given our draft a failing grade. Not to say I don't think these guys have bright futures, it's just that for the club, Hanson and Teagarden would have been much smarter picks... So Baseball America ranks us #1 and you give us an F??? Gee, there seems to be a fairly wide disparity between opinions. Don't you think we deserve at least a C-? As for Hanson I seem to recall we made a strong run at him...I believe there was some sort of contractual issues. Which agent represents Hanson & Teagarden? :mischief2 Look, our 2009 rotation figures to be: Beckett, Willis, Johnson, Volstad and Olsen, so where the hell to you fit in Thompson, Marceaux, West, Vargas, Tankersly, or even Allison? Conversely, in 2009, we figure to have a need for a catcher, centerfielder, left-fielder, and maybe second baseman. Teagarden could have filled one of those voids. We could have taken him with the 100th overall pick, for the love of God, I don't care if Boras is his agent, use that second rounder and try your best to sign him. Hansen was good enough to be ranked #1 on a few organizations draft boards, and given the lack of bullpen depth in our organization and our inability to be serious players in the free-agent closer's market, Hense for the $2.5 million he signed for would have been a smart signing given that we're going to have to offer more than that for just one year of Jones, and to be honest, I think Hansen will be a better pitcher in '06 than Jones. I'm evaluating the draft based on who we passed on, and loading up on starting pitching which was already a position of strength in the organization. BA was basing it on us taking 5 starting pitchers with high-cielings, but they ignored the fact that only one of those figures to make the rotation given the presence of all our other starters. With all of the first round picks we had, it's hard to not walk away with good players, the problem is, we could have walked away with even better players, and we certainly could have made our organization deeper. I certainly see your point...I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think the Marlins opted for the "best signable player available theory" in their picks. Their rationale was obviously to stock pile arm with high ceilings with the potential for making future deals to strengthen other areas of weaknesses. Only time will tell if this philosophy was sound. Saying that the draft was a "failure" is a bit extreme no matter your perspective. :thumbup

Any word from the skeptics who voiced their disappointment after draft day? :mischief2 still here You're still here? I thought for sure you'd be in LA or Boston by now. If you read into it, BA gives more credit to the amount of high draft picks than the choices made. So you're saying it's quantity not quality as far as our 2005 draft goes?

Baseball America names Top 10 Prospects for 2005
Should Willingham be considered a prospect? I mean come on. Yes. He's only 27 and he's never met the MLB rookie requirements nor had a real shot in the majors. that and he can flat out rake Damn, send him to my house...I can use some help. I'm still dealing with Wilma cleanup.... :whistle

I seem to recall the "Nomar" moves working out pretty well. Adding O. Cabrera & Doug Mienkt?#@iewtc definately helped propel the Sox to the World Series.

Coaching staff...
Here's some Gil Patterson info:Gil Patterson Very interesting...thanks for posting. Sounds like he might be a solid addition to the staff. I like the Roy Halladay connection. :thumbup

Coaching staff...
As per the Sun-Sentinel... Don Baylor, who managed Girardi with the Rockies and Cubs, is a leading candidate for bench coach. Others expected to receive consideration include Andres Galarraga (hitting), Gil Patterson (pitching), Mike Harkey (bullpen) and Bobby Meacham (third base). I remember Meacham from his days as a Yankee...I love the youthful makeup of the potential coaching staff. It looks like Zimmer and Stottlemyre will not be joining Girardi. Anyone have some background on Patterson? :thumbup

We got him
Even as a Yankee fan, I can't really say that I'm that pleased. At least Fredi has been a manager before, even if it was in the minors. Yeah...the lack of managerial experience really hurt Ozzie Guillen. This is a great move by Loria. Can't wait to see his staff. Any chance Al Leiter might have a spot in the organization? I've got to assume he knows Girardi pretty well.

A quickie outtake on Girardi -UPDATED
I am really hoping Girardi picks the Fish...he is such an great candidate. How about that proposed staff??? Hill, Wiley, Zimmer/Baylor, Galarraga...wow! :thumbup

Loria Wants Girardi as Manager
Not to say that I'd be angry if we hire him, but I'm progressively beginning to like Girardi less and less. Gonzalez must have flunked his interview becuase I thought for sure there'd be more of a 50/50 split in the organization between him and Girardi. I like to have Wiley back. But would Girardi want him back? No, according to an article from a Connecticut paper that you have to register to read, he'd want Stottlemeyer. I wonder how that combo (Joe and Sto) would manage the bullpen of a NL team. not saying they couldn't be successful, but there are going to be question marks They wer both in the NL before, weren't they? Girardi played for the Cubs and Rockies. Stottlemyre coached for the Cardinals when Torre was there, no? Stottlemyre was the pitching coach for the 86 Mets when they won the World Series. I wonder if the batting coach from that team was any good back then??? :mischief2
-
Stottlemyre to fish?
I think Girardi would put together a well balanced coaching staff...Zimmer would be a lock and Stottlemyre would be a great addition as well. I would think a younger batting coach would also be a good move. Anyone come to mind???
