You countered by saying that he could because he did. Which makes no sense whatsoever. If he could take these financial hits then he would not have changed anything on the team. The fact that he purged the payroll in an effort to recoup some of his losses, which isn't entirely wrong or anything, tells me that he cannot afford to do it. I don't quite understand exactly what I said that was wrong or "inaccurate"? I'm not trying to pick any fights here. I am just under the impression that when Loria is placed under financial duress he quickly and poignantly moves to address the issue whether it is right or wrong and then I compared him to other owners of various sports franchises in Miami. In summation, what I was trying to express which didn't come across correctly was that if the Marlins missed the mark by 40 Million dollars, then shave 40 million off the payroll, which would pt us at 60 million or so, don't completely blow it up and start from scratch as I have sat through many of these rebuilding years and they suck for all the fans. The 2003 Marlins had a nice payoff, but that was the other point I tried to make which was that another GM was partly responsible for constructing that team through trades and the draft. A GM that has taken another team to the World Series on multiple occasions. I've made the point in another thread, but it deserves to be made here. The team, as constructed wasn't going to compete for a wildcard and would likely cost more and win even less. Outside of two prospects that were on the horizon, it was a cesspool of nothing that was being forced into a snowman like team. Yes the team was there, but it underachieved when the weather turned to the mid 70's. Instead of letting all the assets on the team rot (Reyes, Buerhle, Bell) or leave this summer (JJ, Boni, Buck, Choate) he hit the release button and replenished the farm from one of the worst to one of the best. For a comparison of what happens when you wait too long, meet the mets. They were mired in mediocrity for the last four years, plugging bandaid over bandaid in the outfield with Andreas Torres, angel pagan, and others. The two decent trades they made , Beltran and Dickey were out of nessesitty because they couldn't resign them and almost will lose them for nothing. They let an even better Jose Reyes go after a batting title because they couldn't afford him and got nothing back. Their farm is horrible outside of D'Arnaud, Wheeler and Harvey and two of them are from trades. You sit back and realize, they do not have a bright future, the marlins just might. I have no doubt if the team plays well, we'll make a move to put us over the top. But right now, I'd take the Marlins organization over the mets 9/10 times simply because they saw a totaled car and junked it for 500, instead of letting it rot in the yard and become worthless. That's what I think of the Mets the last three seasons, and the Marlins. Both were totaled, but only one walked away with the foresight to see where they were going next instead of admiring their wreckage. Loria shouldn't be applauded for slashing payroll, but he should be for realizing it was hopeless and getting what he could to speed up any retooling. The Wilpons did nothing, and I don't see them finishing out of last in the NL east for 3 or 4 years.

My argument is just that, mine. If you don't like my opinion, skip it. You asked for it and I obliged. I dislike Atlanta's rotation and hitting. I don't think they'll pitch well enough in innings 1-6 to win. I don't think they'll hit for much average and won't score enough runs to offset. I don't see atlanta hitting for average, just power. With that, I think Miami will create more runs, and their rotation will be adequete enough to support those runs. I dislike Philly's lineup, I can't see them creating enough runs to win. I can't see Howard, Utley or Young playing a full season. If the rotation gives up 4 runs a game, they'll lose. I feel Miami's lineup will outhit Phillys, and can stay healthy. New Yorks lineup is a joke, its a mix of old players who never hit and a superstar. Ike Davis power, and David Wright's average will be the lone bright spots. John Buck, Niewenhis, Byrd, Tejada and Duda will be jokes who barely bat .240. I feel Miami's rotation will have more upside, and so will their lineup. Miami's biggest strength over NY is their entire lineup has upside, we've seen NY's upside. Washington, they are going to be a beast. I see them running away with this division from day one. Haren, Strasburg, Gonzalez, Zimmerman, Detwiler. Two Cy Young contenders, and a lineup and bullpen to support them.

NL: East Washington Miami Philadelphia Atlanta New York I seriously hope that you are trolling. I really don't think Atlanta, New York and Philadelphia are much better than Miami. I can see Philadelphia taking second, but that's because someone has to be in second. I think the NL east is going to be in the running for the worst in baseball. Atlanta improved, but not dramatically and they'll underachieve. I don't like their pitching rotation, or the addition of BJ Upton and the loss of Chipper Jones. Dan Uggla isn't going to be in the running for a batting title anytime soon, which is part of what I think ATL's problem is going to be. They can hit for HR's, but not for average. New York I think is in worse shape than Miami, having tried to weather the shit storm of the past few seasons and holding on to assests too long. Exactly the reason why I like that Miami blew it up once they saw it wasn't working. David Wright is going to be the next Tony Gwynn, a great player that never really enjoyed postseason success. AND That sucks. Philadelphia suffers from having no hitting, and all pitching. The real difference in them from Atlanta. If their pitching can hold teams to 3 runs a game, they'll take second. If they allow 4 a game, they won't be respectable. Miami is a mixed bag, they have all the potential to do well but none of the history the other teams have. We don't know what were getting, but I think that's a good thing. If they can pull it together, they'll finish around 81-81. If they don't they'll finish in the 70's. For the record, I think this is how the Division shakes up. Nationals 99-63 Marlins 81-81 Phillies 81-81 Atlanta 79-83 Mets 72- 90

Clemmensen cant even rely on being a system goalie -- he's letting in legitimate 'routine' saves. Those first two at the end of the first were back breakers.... the team had no chance of climbing out of the depressive hole he dug them. We'll see a new team with Markstrom out there, a new goalie can do wonders for a teams mental health. We weren't going anywhere with Theodore or Clemmenson.

Clemenson sucks so bad. I thought he was the perfect backup but he can't even do that , right now. But his Potvin inspired helmet is the tits.

He doesn't want to be profitable, he wants to win and if they are going to lose they might as well lose cheap. The team was shit last year, and it ate at him. So he cheats on baseball with his profits. But when the chance comes to share his profits with his teams on field product he does. There are clear sky's ahead, and hopefully it's soon. I really believe Loria loves this team and its not a business but a hobby for him. But like any hobby you can't let it make you broke. Arison may be a billionaire, but he's not stupid. His pockets may be deeper but he's not stupid. Mickey spent when the time was right, when will it be for Loria? When he signed pudge? Or Reyes, Buerhle, Bell? Mickey may be the richest owner in all of sports, before Lebron even came here. You can't compare him to Loria. Heck, I don't even think you can compare the Steinbrenners to Arison.

And we hopefully trade Lohse for something that has a more guaranteed chance of contributing sooner than a second round draft pick would. Not all picks pan out, but if you can swap Lohse for Bourjos it's a win I think.

All the sports guys were thinking a sign and trade between Cleveland and Mets for Bourne so it wouldn't be to outlandish by the sound of it. Yeah, but its the Marlins. We all know Passan and Law would be all over them for trading another star, even if the star only signed to be traded.

Can you do sign and trades in baseball? Yes, and no. I don't think baseball will get mad at circumventing the rules at this type of transaction because it actually helps the player. But once it's a sign and trade that is blatantly against the players best interest they will probably do something. I think sign and trades are Frowned upon, but not illegal in other words.
