  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leland_D._Melvin Leland D. Melvin was a football player at Division I-AA Richmond. Now, he's an astronaut, and will launch this afternoon on STS-122. I'd love to see the NCAA tout this one.
  2. "w00t" should be voted as Banned From the English Language, not Word of the Year. I chose "pugnacious."
  3. http://www.statesman.com/business/content/...5/1205wind.html The famed King Ranch and a coalition of environmental groups sued Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson in federal court Tuesday, seeking to require extensive environmental review and public comment on two planned wind power projects along the Gulf Coast in Kenedy County. The coalition, the Coastal Habitat Alliance, also sued over the wind project in state District Court in Travis County. That suit claims that the state's Public Utility Commission illegally denied the alliance's request to participate in permit hearings for the wind project's transmission line. The lawsuits threaten to delay or stop the two massive wind projects, which could place more than 600 turbines on 60,000 acres near Laguna Madre, south of Corpus Christi. Part of the wind projects would place about 250 turbines just east of a portion of the sprawling King Ranch. The federal suit, filed in U.S. Western District Court in Austin, said the turbines could kill untold numbers of migratory birds and damage the bay. It seeks to overturn the decision by the Texas General Land office, which Patterson heads, to allow the projects to be built without environmental review or input from the public. The suit contends that the Federal Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 and the Texas Coastal Management Program require a permit process for any energy generation facility on the coast, including wind farms. Besides King Ranch Inc., the coastal alliance includes four Gulf Coast-area Aubudon societies and several local environmental organizations. The land office said it doesn't comment on pending litigation. The federal suit also names the wind project developers: PPM Energy Inc., a Portland, Ore.-based subsidiary of Spanish utility Iberdrola SA; and Australian investment firm Babcock & Brown Ltd. PPM officials did not return a call for comment; Babcock & Brown could not be reached for comment. Houston lawyer Jim Blackburn, the coastal alliance's lead lawyer, said the federal coastal management act "mandates that Texas must conduct environmental assessments of all energy projects, including wind, in order to receive federal money." King Ranch backed unsuccessful legislation earlier this year that would have required the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to establish a permit process to take into account the environmental consequences of wind turbines. Environmentalists suing to stop a wind farm?! What's more important, the occasional bird carcass or stopping "man-made global warming"?
  4. The gunman wants a plea deal. And of course, the moment you try to talk to prosecutors about a deal, no matter how hard you try to say you're not admitting wrongdoing "yet", you're pretty much saying you're guilty. BTW: prinmemito is right. Roper v. Simmons, 543 U.S. 551 (2005), prohibits executing somebody for a murder they committed under the age of 18.
  5. The title is even more unlikely than the predictions under it. Florida's weather is moderated by the humidity. That's why Toronto has a higher all-time record high (99) than Miami (98). Why Minneapolis has a higher all-time record high (105) than Orlando (102). Even if the most ludacrious of global warming scenarios were to come true, there is no way in Hell that Miami will ever be the hottest city in the state, much less the World.
  6. Putting that kind of incentive behind tuition is completely asinine. On that note, how was life so much better when he was 11? I get the feeling he's among the armies of naive twerps on either side doing things because they are "cool" and not for reasons they put half a thought behind.
  7. I just thought of something. It's utterly laughable, but considering our payroll is only seven figures at the moment and we're getting around $60M in revenue sharing, it's not entirely impossible. What if this is setting the table for an 11:59 deal for A-Rod? What if, all of a sudden at the winter meetings, Scott Boras and Jeffrey Loria came out and announced a 10 year, $300-million-or-soforth contract to bring Alex Rodriguez to the Florida Marlins? Think about it. He hasn't signed the "framework deal" with the Yankees yet. One can dream. :mischief
  8. *crickets chirping* We still have an NFL season, you know.
  9. He'll need some hookers to accompany that blow. Someone has to know the going rate for a good hooker. :confused He could fly to Carson City, Nevada, and do it legally at the Moonlite BunnyRanch. :mischief $1,695 first class on American Airlines from Miami to Reno. Someone else look up the whore house? I can't do it from work. :mischief
  10. Orlando Rays replied to a post in a topic in Sports
Those Toronto jerseys are old school, pretty much the same as some of their late 80's-early 90's unis except fopr teh blue pnats, which I'm not really a fan of. Actually it's their road uni from 1980 through 1988. In 1989 they went back to grey road unis. I myself think anything in the 70s triple-stripe font for Toronto is awesome. Now if San Diego can just bring back the brown. Or the Indians bring back the solid red. :mischief
  11. Stay with the Marlins. But if we end up in the tank again this year, down with Jeffrey Loria. :mischief
  12. Don't buy movie DVDs anymore. Dumb investment unless you think you are going to have the SD format for over another year. Corrected. There are still plenty of classic TV shows that are only available in SD from the videotape era. Sure, some oldies that were filmed will be turned to HD (like Star Trek has now), but a lot, especially videotaped shows from the 70s through the 90s, will still only be available in SD formats. There's no way they'd put an entire season of a show in SD on Blu-Ray; it would force them to lower prices. :mischief
  13. Used to be a pretty solid prospect for the Rays, I believe he was rated just after Upton and Delmon low 90s fastball, slider, they always would talk that he'd be much cooler if he developed a solid changeup... not sure if that ever happened It didn't. Trust me. He was hailed as a possible savior after a CGSO in his first 40-man callup in 2003. Then he actually took the mound regularly, and people realized that Scott Kazmir was the real savior.
  14. I'm actually going to HD-DVD. Or maybe a SuperBlu, just in case. :mischief But not until my 2009 tax refund. No reason to upgrade now. I got my parents tickets to the Rascal Flatts concert in Orlando, and my nephew a full drum of Tinker Toys. Not sure what to get Grampa or my sister and her husband yet. Also got gifts for my boss and my tech co-worker.
  15. The Lolphins going up to Buffalo. If we're lucky, a blizzard will come and bury the stadium the night before. Wait, who am I kidding? The NFL never calls games on account of weather. We're f***ed again. Jacksonville hosting the Panthers in the battle of the cats. The Jags will help the Bucs clinch the NFC South. Me-ow! :mischief Tampa Bay headed to Houston to play under the retractable roof by the first dome. Can I stop saying this is the week they prove they're for real now? :mischief Atlanta hosts the 'aints on Monday Night, my first MNF game in "byoo-tiful High Definition". Bawlmur pits their accusations of conspiracy against Indy on Sunday Night. And the Bears are headed to Landover for Thursday Night.
  16. yawn that shows how much you know about baseball... It isnt only a Yankee thing its a baseball thing... This makes That division tougher and if they now get Santana makes it even more interesting... He may be yawning as if he expected this to happen, not at the importance of Pettitte remaining with the Yanks.
  17. Scott Hall no-showed the TNA PPV last night due to "food poisoning" and was pretty much buried on the mic by Samoa Joe. I didn't see it, but they are calling Samoa Joe's promo the best moment of the PPV. It may very well be the best moment in TNA history.
  18. Chicago Jacksonville Dallas Miami Giants Green Bay San Diego Cincinnati Tampa Bay Seattle Minnesota Cleveland Denver New England Indianapolis New Orleans 13-3
  19. Elijah Dukes was ejected in the ninth inning of Thursday's Dominican Winter League and had to be restrained from going after the umpire. As if he was really going to make it through the whole winter without a blowup. "It got a little ugly," said Jesus Campos, the vice president of the Cibao team Dukes was playing against. "If it wasn't for (teammate) Andy Tracy holding him back, things could have gotten a lot worse. ... It definitely wasn't a safe situation for the umpire because (Dukes) is a big guy." The Rays may have lost their top suitor for Dukes with the Nationals grabbing Lastings Milledge, though we imagine Jim Bowden would still be interested if he came cheap enough. Tampa Bay has an opening in right field for Dukes with Delmon Young gone, but it looks like the team would prefer to go in a difference direction. Link Elijahhhhhhhhhhh Carl Crawford went after an umpire last year, but that was because of a very obvious blown call where he was called out at first when he was a full stride ahead of the throw. Any idea what Dukes was thrown out for?
  20. Is it safe to say that the Dolphins need to draft a quarterback in the upcoming draft? :| Nah... they didn't need Brady Quinn last time.
  21. Maurice Jones-Drew is a God. Large G.
  22. YES!!! PICK THAT MOTHER F***ER OFF!!!
  23. Ouch. The Lions are getting f***ed in the ass. 35-10.
