Blue Jays to get rid of Rios?
1 of thome or dye won't be returning to the sox next season because rios will be there long term answer in RF. i actually think thome will be the one resigned and play DH because he's a left handed hitter in the middle of the lineup For the remainder of the '09 season, Ozzie will have quite a juggling act on his hands with a crowded outfield. But moving forward into '10 and beyond, Rios will be the White Sox CF. He is a natural center fielder, he played in RF because the Jays already had Vernon Wells. Rios is a bit over-paid. But the White Sox can afford it, especially with all of the money they have coming off of the books over the next two years. And CF has been a black hole for the Sox in recent years. Kenny Williams has now fixed that problem with this deal. Jim Thome will not be back with the White Sox next year. Dye could return, but that'll play out in the off-season. personally i think podsednik will stay with the sox and be there CF in '10. i think people have overlooked the importance of him to the sox. they were a mediocre team until he came in and stabilized the top of their lineup with his average and speed. unless they go out and get another leadoff man during the offseason, podsednik is their best shot at the top of the order. Pods is below average at playing CF. Defensively, he belongs in LF. Podsednik has been a great story this year. And yes, he's been the sparkplug to the offense and key to the Sox still being in contention. He should win A.L. Comeback Player of the Year award, no question. That being said, I don't think he is in their future plans. He is 33 years old, and if look at his decline over the past few seasons, there's not much evidence there that suggests you can expect this same performance next year. Chances are, the season he is having this year is the exception and not the rule. He could prove everybody wrong, and I'm sure the Sox would love to keep him around as a 4th outfield option. But with the season he's having right now, I'm sure some other team will offer him a starting job. Kenny Williams is trying to put together a team that can win for 4-5 years straight. I just don't see Scotty being on his board as "plan-A" in CF.

I thought I'd run out, but they keep coming. It must stop. This has inspired me, though. I'm going to start a spreadsheet and see if I can eventually have a comprehensive list of every band/artist I have seen live. It's a little tougher now that ticketing works different with the internet and all. Now you don't always end up with the traditional ticket stub to save.

Mark Reynolds
Yeah, Reynolds strikes out. But to argue that he wouldn't be an upgrade to this team is silly. He would have a huge impact on the overall run production. That being said, I don't even know why this is being debated. It's already been stated here, but teams that are unloading get rid of veterans who make real money, not young players who put up huge numbers and aren't making much money yet. Guys like Reynolds and Drew are what the D'Backs will look to build around. It's the buyers who send away future studs, not the sellers. Reynolds is not available.

Marlins interested in Mark DeRosa
I agree w/ El Penguino that this team is not currently as talented as the '03 team. But then again, this isn't the '03 season. The Fish don't have to be better than the '03 team, they just have to win more games than the Phillies and the Mets, who both have their own problems too. It really all boils down to whether or not the front office believes this team has a shot at it. If so, they will go for it and won't be afraid to trade top prospects. I see a lot of talk about not wanting to give up this guy or that guy, but you have to remember that the Marlins don't build dynasties. If they believe they have a shot this year they will put all of their eggs in that basket. I'm not saying they should or they shouldn't... I think I need to watch 'em for a few more weeks before I form my opinion on that. I'm just saying that this is an organization that works year after year toward that perfect storm, and then strikes when the iron is hot. I don't think they'll be afraid to make any move if they really believe it's the right time. We'll see.

Housekeeping Items
I was at the games on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. I was sportin' a Marlin shirsey each day. Overall, I didn't get heckled too bad. I was sitting on the infield for all of the games, though. In my Wrigley experiences, I find that the more intelligent and good natured fans are usually in the regular seats, and the yahoos are all out in the bleachers. I think it would've been a different experience had I been in the bleachers. I was getting heckled about my Cantu shirt on Thursday night right before he hit the home run, that was pretty funny. The guy was being good natured about it, just having fun. One Cub fan even complimented my shirt, said "He's a hell of a good player." On Friday and Sunday I was wearing my old Beckett shirsey. (My girl went with me on Sunday, and she wore the Cantu shirt.) I thought it was kinda funny, because most people just looked suprised when they saw a Marlins shirt. Just wish the outcome was different on Fri. - Sun.

Orlando Cabrera?
Chicago dude here. This guy gets bagged on way too much, Cabrera is a good player. Not a star player, but solid. He IS a good defender and an average bat. You could do a lot worse. However, I agree that it's not the best move for the Marlins with what they already have. Whoever mentioned Joe Crede is right on. It's a risk in terms of health. But he can be had for a one year deal, and probably comes cheaper than Cabrera. If healthy, Crede is a top-notch 3B who can hit 25 dingers and give you 75 RBI. Crede almost seems like a no-brainer for the Marlins.

Is it too early to wave the white flag ?
Basically all you did was list the excuses why you don't go to games and transformed them into reasons the Marlins aren't playing well, lol. The Marlins aren't playing well because they don't prevent runs and are inconsistent on offense not cause of the Mermaids (who I happen to like), 10 dollar parking, or gameday ticket price hikes. I believe part of the Marlins home winning problems stem partly from the lack of a home atmosphere. How can you explain the way they play on the road as opposed at home ? You just see them have more desire on the road. You are fooling yourself if you think going to a game here gives you the same feeling that you feel at almost every other ballpark in baseball. Maybe nobody else has cheerleaders, but there's ridiculous things at every ballpark that annoy those of us who came to watch baseball. At U.S. Cellular the centerfield wall opens up in between innings and two big Chevy trucks drive out onto the warning track while people run around with t-shirt cannons shooting Chevy sponsored shirts into the crowd. Say it all together - L A M E !!! And it costs $20 to park here. (Glad I live in walking distance!) I'd rather have some cheerleaders, personally. The point is - a team's success is not determined by this crap. You should know that better than anyone. The Marlins have won two World Series playing in Miami. No offense to Miami, but you know what I mean. (I hope.) The Marlins really need to spend money. With the way they bring up talent, they don't even need to spend like the big dogs. I would think that somewhere in the $60-$70 million ballpark should get them in the playoffs on a regualr basis... considering how decent they've been while spending nothing. (That's not a huge payroll these days.) Keep Miggy and don't be afraid to buy some pitchers. Sign a couple of old dudes to 1 year contracts. Anything. *The last paragraph is pure speculation and I have ran no realistic scenerios to back it up. In other words, I'm talking out of my ass. I'm just sayin...

Old Music Thread
One of my other favorite "old" musical genres is the sound that was before grunge, that "Minneapolis Punk/Rock" that brought forth H?sker D? and The Replacements! Good call!!! But you only named 2/3 of the "holy trifecta". No matter what people's opinions are of their work in the 90's, Soul Asylum made great music in the 80's. While You Were Out is one of my favorite records of that era. And out of the "big three", Soul Asylum was the best live. Still, The Replacements and Husker Du remain at the top of my list of reunion shows I'd like to see. The twin cities have produced some of the best American music. It's probably my favorite music scene. (I just hate the Twins, though.

Lineups for tonight's Marlins/Sox game.
The preview on MLB.com says that Carroll will likely start in CF tonight.

Pitchers vs. Chicago
Tonight it's Josh Johnson vs. Jose Contreras. Willis and Mitre are pitching for the Marlins on Tues/Wed. I don't know about who the White Sox are throwing in the final two games of the series. Jon Danks on Tuesday, and Jon Garland on Wednesday. Despite the lack of wins, The Sox rotation is solid 1-5. Their pitching problems are in the bullpen. If the Marlins are patient at the plate, get the pitch count up, and can get the starter out of the game around the 7th inning or so, they should have no problem scoring runs off of the Sox bullpen. Bobby Jenks is the only guy out there who hasn't been getting lit up on a regular basis. But they can rarely get the ball to him in a save situation. The White Sox haven't been scoring a lot of runs either, so it's not like you need to score 10 runs to beat them. I'll be at the game tonight!

White Sox Fans
Congrats Marlin fans! Yet another White Sox fan here. Like the rest of us, I am grateful for the spanking that the Marlins handed the Cubs. I have enjoyed watching your team over the last month or so. Nobody thought they could take out the Phillies, and they did. Nobody thought they could beat the Giants, and they did. Up here in Chicago all we heard about was how it is impossible to beat both Prior and Wood in consecutive games, and the Marlins beat 'em both. The Marlins play old school baseball, and I love it. They play great defense. They steal bases. Timely hitting. Their pitching ain't too shabby either. I have been pulling for the Red Sox since the begining of the playoffs, but if they make it I will be rooting for the Marlins. They've earned it. You got my support in future seasons too. I know Florida baseball doesn't get much respect from the national media. But the Marlins are only a little over a decade old, and this is already their second World Series. As a White Sox fan, I enjoy following a team with a rich history dating back over a hundred years. But it's also fun to witness the begining stages of a winning tradition. So here's to a bright future in south Florida. CHEERS!
