He says he will move to second to land a bigger contract? Well we sure won't be giving him that bigger contract IMO. I'm not really against moving uggla to 3rd I think he can handle it and I'm also not sold on sanchez.

Haha I know but I figure uggla at third bounces cantu to first.

On one hand it seems to make no sense from a number angles, but on the other the cost of a high draft pick may mitigate a signing if the intention is to make a run at the playoffs with a one and done. So much of these rumors are just that and I'm not sure what stock to put in this one.

 

In the end it sounds more like hot stove chatter and idle speculation than anything else.

i highly highly highly doubt this would happen. although if it were i'd rather move hanley to 3B and keep uggla at 2B and keep cabrera at SS. i still don't see the marlins opening their wallets for a 34 year old shortstop especially since they'd also lose a draft pick.

If they really wanted a 2B...why not just put some interest in a real one...Orlando Hudson.

this move really doesn't make any sense. so lets say we get Cabrera and we put him to play 2nd. We move Uggla to 3rd base.

 

Now you got Gaby Sanchez, McPherson, Cantu at 1st base, not to mention u have Helms on the bench. They are also saying Morrison could be in the mix for 1st base job come ST even though thats a long shot.

Like the Pavano rumor. It's pretty evident that was true but we were just outbid.

I would rather keep our DP combo of Hanley and Uggla intact. They have been together 3 years and have built up a good understanding on the field. With Cabrera we would have far too many infielders - Hanley, Uggla, Cantu, Sanchez, Helms, McPherson, Bonaficio, Andino and Amezaga

IF it were someone with way better offensive stats I wouldn't mind this being true but that's not the case.

If you're going to make a move like that, why not sign Joe Crede instead, who plays GG defense at the hot corner? Signing Cabrera most likely makes us worse, and is at best a lateral move that costs more money.

If the organisation was actually pursuing Cabrera, and it wasnt just a rumour, then it would indicate either they were planning on dealing a key infielder in a potential trade OR they were planning to converting a current key infielder to an outfield position IMO

Just plain silly. Even if the Marlins wanted to pay a journeyman $5 or $8 million a year, which is completely out of the question at face value, what would be accomplished? If you moved Uggla to third, you would be negating half his value as a player. The offensive punch you get from Uggla as a second baseman is what makes him a unique contributor. Put him at third and he is no upgrade over Cantu. Same would go for moving Hanley out of the shortstop role. He's one of top few players in the game because he plays short. Having Ramirez and Uggla as the keystone combo is the foundation of the Marlins offense. I wouldn't mess with Cantu at third base either. His defense improved in the second half and he was a solid hitter. I wouldn't hesitate to play McPherson at third, however, if Cantu could land the lefty Sanchez from SF, a deal I'm still hoping materializes. Gaby Sanchez is going to be absolutely solid at first base and at the plate ... I just know it. I'm hoping to see Maybin lead off and Hanley bat second. Hanley needs to see all the fastballs he can get. G. Sanchez third in the order. Cantu cleanup. Hermida. Uggla. Ross. And Baker. Let's start the season tomorrow.

I agree w/ most of what you have to say. However, I would like to see Sanchez reaction to ML pitchers before I honor him w/ batting third. Sometimes these kids need a year or two of adjusting to ML pitchers before putting that kind of pressure on him. Baker did a good job last year. I wouldn't mind trying him out batting second before putting Sanchez there.

but in 1 or 2 years you need a new SS. I think it might be easier to only move Hanley to third yes, but long term it might not work out so well.

This guy gets bagged on way too much, Cabrera is a good player. Not a star player, but solid. He IS a good defender and an average bat. You could do a lot worse.

 

However, I agree that it's not the best move for the Marlins with what they already have. Whoever mentioned Joe Crede is right on. It's a risk in terms of health. But he can be had for a one year deal, and probably comes cheaper than Cabrera. If healthy, Crede is a top-notch 3B who can hit 25 dingers and give you 75 RBI.

My preference is - Maybin, Baker, Hanley, Cantu, Uggla, Ross, Sanchez, Hermida

Or swap Herm and Sanchez about, but for me 1-6 is the best option available

We are crowded enough at the corners as it is. We don't have the luxury of picking up a guy like Crede, nor do we need to. Cabrera makes even less sense.

 

By all indications, Gaby Sanchez is going to have the opportunity to win the first base job in spring training. His main competition, and seemingly the odd man out, is McPherson. If Gaby wins the job outright, my hopes are that we can retain Dallas for the bench, especially if we're unable to sign a left-handed hitting outfielder before the offseason is over.
