Miami Heat 09-10 Season Thread
That dunk on Varejao was one of the best I've ever seen. Too bad they couldn't get the W. That was awesome. Probably ranks second to the dunk he had on JO in the playoffs his rookie year. Anyway, the Heat was right in that game, but never got that 8-0. 12-2 type run they needed to pull a way a bit. The Cavs obviously are a very good team, but it was a winnable game so that is positive I guess....Oh well, have to come out tomorrow against the Nets and take care of business. The Nets are not good and injured so a win is a must.

Sammy Sosa's new look
There was an article that said he's going through a 'skin rejuvination' procedure to help ease the effects of sun damage...I guess all of those Wrigley day games make people whiter?? Anyway, it might be the lighting of that picture because his wife looks a lot lighter in the second shot as well.

Dombrowski vs Hill & Beinfest
Why?  Dombrowski was great, but Beinfest/Hill have more winning seasons while working with far less money. we won the 03 world series with mainly dombrowski players I don't know. Do we win the WS without Willis, Pierre, Encarnacion, Redman, Conine, and Urbina? All were acquired by Beinfest.

Regalado as Mayor
As far as I can tell, he will have no impact on this project. All of the contracts are signed, bonds are sold, the stadium contstruction is well under way, and the city had the smallest contribution of the 3 parties. He may not like the Stadium, but there's nothing much this new mayor can do about it now.

Regalado becomes mayor of Miami
I don't live in Miami, but thanks to the stadium deal, I have watched my fair share of Miami commission meetings. This guy is a complete tool. Good thing the stadium is already being built and there is nothing this guy can do about it!

Miami Heat 09-10 Season Thread
Stupid Steve Nash. Dirty rag doll lookin' mother... Yeah, he kills the Heat...can't stand him. But he was awesome in the second half. As for the Heat, I thought Wade seemed a little off his game (although he still put up close to a triple double) and they must use Beasley more than 24 min. I know he had some foul trouble, but he's a guy I'd let play with 4 fouls late in a game. QRich was good and Arroyo had his moments. Still really miss Cook. He needs to get back. Oh well, guess they won't be 82-0 this year.

Akinori Iwamura is getting traded soon
Well, perhaps we should rephrase the question: can he play third base adequately? (I don't know). Even if he can, that offense (no power, mid-low .700s OPS) insinuates that he is perhaps better suited as a 2B than a 3B. I would pass on him. I would rather try to resign Nick Johnson for that money. Agreed.

Miami Heat 09-10 Season Thread
3 And 0, 3 AND 0!!!!!!!! D Wade looks as good as ever and we are getting great production form Haslem, Chalmers, Beasley, J.O. and Haslem. All we really need is for Q to step it up and give us a solid 3 or 4 3's a night. Also, wheres James Jones? Is he hurt? Jones had the flu and wasn't with the team in Indiana, but he was active last night. Not sure if he didn't play last night because he was still recovering or if he has slipped behind Wright in the rotation. Anyway, last night was a really good win. The Bulls have a solid team and they always give the Heat a tough time, so it was great to see them grind it out and finish the game strong. In privious seasons, when the Heat trailed by 3 or 5 in the 3rd quarter, the opponents would have stretched it to a 10+ point lead. Last night, the Heat hung around and found a way to win. Not bad for a team that was without an important part of their bench in Cook.

2009-10 Florida Panthers thread
Wow, two in a row for the Cats. For some reason, this team doesn't seem to play well until some key players get hurt. The same thing happened last year...they have injuries, call up some prospects and then play just basic, good hockey. On Wednesday, the Hurricanes come in and they have to start getting points at home. 1-4 at home is obviously not going to cut it. And Carolina is terrible, the Cats have 2 more points then they do.....and one of their wins was against us. I think this is as close to a must win as you can have this early in the year.

Finally a win in Indy! 2-0! JO looks healthy and awesome so far. 22 and 12 for a second straight game. Beasley 12 and 9. Wade with 32. Great effort all around.

Stadium Construction reaches 100 days
100 days in and the stadium is starting to take shape. After more then a deacde of commission meetings and lawsuits and negative talk, it is hard to believe we finally have reached this point! Lots of good stuff today from the media visit to the site. These links include some good video and pictures of what is taking place: http://blogs.trb.com/sports/custom/business/blog/ This link from WPLG has a cool slideshow as well: http://www.justnews.com/sports/21465199/detail.html http://cbs4.com/local/Marlins.Baseball.Stadium.2.1278879.html

Marlins hire St. Claire
Not near the top of my list but I'd rather have him than someone like Reid Cornelius. Agreed. Not my first choice...and I don't think he was the Marlins first choice either(they probably wanted Price), but I can live with it. At least he has a ton of experience. The Nats pitching staff has been a disaster for the past few seasons for reasons mostly beyond the control of any pitching coach.

Indians name their new manager...
Well when he was hired by the Nats, he was considered one of the top managerial candidates in baseball. Obviously he didn't have much talent to work with in Washington, so while they were bad, I don't think he can take too much of that blame. There is only so much a manager can do with a bad roster. The more more Marlins-relevent question is whether Randy St. Claire is joining him in Cleveland?

Any chance this derails the stadium ?
No, this will not derail the stadium. In fact, they already voted. After some long and boring debate, they voted 3-2 for the funding but capped it at $120 million. If they need more, they'll have to go back to the commission and explain why. Seems reasonable to me. http://southflorida.bizjournals.com/southflorida/stories/2009/10/19/daily74.html# Miami commissioners vote on stadium parking garage fundingSouth Florida Business Journal - by Oscar Pedro Musibay Citing concerns over rising and duplicative costs, Miami city commissioners on Thursday voted 3-2 to cap the cost of funding the new 6,000-space parking facility at the new Marlins ballpark at $120 million. The city had been seeking up to $135 million to allow flexibility in case bonding costs came in higher than current estimates when the bonds are sold early next year, City Manager Pete Hernandez said. That’s considerably higher than the original projection of $94 million. "The funding includes more than $10 million in owner fees, including inspections, and helps to cover the debt service." Commission Chairman Joe Sanchez, along with Angel Gonzalez and Mark Sarnoff, voted in favor of the bonds, with Michelle Spence-Jones and Tomas Regalado voting against the bonds. Sarnoff pointed to some costs in the city manager’s summary of owner expenses that were duplicated and, for him, were red flags, but said he still felt an obligation to vote for the bond. “Like it or not, you have to support what people have done, Sarnoff said. In March, commissioners approved the $94 million for the parking facility, which includes a covered garage and outside lot spaces. The $120 million includes an additional 15 percent in owner costs, which include design fees, surveys, an environmental consultant and insurance. About $11 million of the $120 million is earmarked for paying debt service on the bond. The $640 million ballpark is expected to be completed by the start of the 2012 season.

Is it too early to get angry at the new ownership? Why haven't they gutted the scouting staff and GM? Yes it's too early.....considering there is no new ownership. The team hasn't been sold yet.

Girl, 12, slugged back at Phillies slugger
Yeah, I think I read too much into the article. $15,000 seems to be what the attorney was seeking. When this story broke over a week ago, it seems the auction estimates were closer to $1,500 to $3,000. That is still a healthy chunk of money. Remember the reason why the ball has monetary value is because Ryan Howard was the quickest player in history to reach that plateau. That is different than some average ballplayer reaching a personal milestone. The girl should be legally entitled to the ball, but I agree that out of respect for the game and Ryan Howard she should have just returned it for reasonable compensation. If it were me, I probably would have returned it immediately unless its estimated worth was in the range of tens of thousands of dollars. Yeah, it has some significance in that he was the quickest to hit 200 HR, but even then, I'd think you'd be hard pressed to find someone willing to pay $1500-$3000 for a record that will likely be broken at some point in the not-to-distant future. The ball only has any real value to Howard. If it were me, I'd probably want an autographed bat and a picture with the guy and the ball just to prove I caught it. Now if it was something that could fetch tens of thousands of dollars? By all means, get whatever you can for it. But if it is something like this, or like the Coghlan situation in Milwaukee, the ball should go to the player...provided the team and the player do the right thing and take care of the fan.

Girl, 12, slugged back at Phillies slugger
Well, the ball is supposedly worth about $15,000 or more. On those grounds alone I think that the ball absolutely has value to someone other than Howard. That might not be life-changing, but I think most people would love to have that in their bank accounts. $15,000 for Ryan Howard's 200th HR? Where did that number come from? If that is the market value of the ball, so be it, but I find that very difficult to believe. Still, it seems Howard and the team acted like jerks in this case. Load the girl up with a lot of gifts and pictures in exchange for the ball and move on, but that apparently that didn't happen. I still say you let the player keep his milestone, but there has to be some kind of reasonable compensation.
-
Girl, 12, slugged back at Phillies slugger
I think this is ridiculous. That ball has no value to anyone but Ryan Howard. Take some autograpghs and get some pictures and let the man have his milestone baseball. This goes for anyone who catches a home run ball. Unless it is a ball that sets some all time record and has the potential to fetch someone a life-changing amount of money on the open market, let the player have the ball.

Perry Hill Available
Please bring him back! I know it says he doesn't want to coach, but maybe they can persuade him to rejoin the team... http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/pirates/s_648573.html?feed=14 Unhappy with trades, Pirate first base coach jumps ship Buzz up!By The Tribune-Review Saturday, October 17, 2009 Last updated: 12:13 pm The Tribune-Review can be reached online or at 412-321-6460. Perry Hill has left the Pirates after one year as the team's first base coach, the team announced today. Hill is recognized as one of the best fielding instructors in baseball, and his departure was not unexpected. Hill has expressed unhappiness that the team traded three-fourths of the infield during the season: Jack Wilson (Seattle), Freddy Sanchez (San Francisco) and Adam LaRoche (Atlanta). "We made an aggressive attempt to bring Perry back, including exercising his option for the 2010 season and offering to restructure and extend his contract. Despite these efforts, Perry has decided that he does not want to coach," said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington. "We respect Perry's decision, appreciate his service to the organization and remain open to Perry returning to the organization if and when he desires to coach again." The Pirates also promoted Triple-A pitching coach Ray Searage to the major-league staff in an undefined role. Searage likely will be groomed as the successor to pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, who will return for a second season with the Pirates in 2010.

Braman Loses AGAIN!
Rot in hell Braman I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. He had a right to sue, he did, and he failed. Now he should just do everyone a favor and go away. Two courts have found absolutely nothing illegal about the stadium deal. An appeal to the Florida Supreme Court would be a gigantic waste of time and money. Not to mention that by the time it ever got heard and ruled upon the stadium will be complete.

Braman Loses AGAIN!
http://southflorida.bizjournals.com/southflorida/stories/2009/10/12/daily38.html Appeals court upholds Marlins stadium fundingSouth Florida Business Journal - by Paul Brinkmann The Third District Court of Appeal in Miami shot down auto dealer Norman Braman’s efforts to block public funding for the Florida Marlins stadium. The appellate court ruling upholds Braman’s loss on all counts of his lawsuit challenging the use of public funding for the stadium after a Miami-Dade Circuit Court trial in July 2008. In the lower court ruling, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Jeri Beth Cohen declared that the county’s receipt and use of revenues in absence of a voter referendum was constitutional. Braman questioned whether the stadium represented a paramount public purpose and whether a larger funding agreement between the city, county and Marlins was constitutional. Officials from Miami-Dade County, the city of Miami and the Florida Marlins officially broke ground on the $640 million project this past summer on July 18. County Mayor Carlos Alvarez said in a press release that the ruling “ensures that we will continue to move forward in a positive direction, creating opportunities for businesses, residents, and visitors. In the past, Braman had promised to take the case as far as the Florida Supreme Court. But Paul Huck, one of the lawyers who represented Braman, said they are evaluating the court ruling and he declined to say whether they would appeal. With a capacity of approximately 37,000 seats, the retractable roof, air-conditioned ballpark will be built on 928,000 square feet on the former Miami Orange Bowl site. Opening Day is expected in April 2012. He's lost every challenge he has made. Will he just go away now? Please!
