Marlins hire St. Claire

Not near the top of my list but I'd rather have him than someone like Reid Cornelius.

Agreed. Not my first choice...and I don't think he was the Marlins first choice either(they probably wanted Price), but I can live with it. At least he has a ton of experience. The Nats pitching staff has been a disaster for the past few seasons for reasons mostly beyond the control of any pitching coach.

Not thrilled about this hiring, but he's our new pitching coach regardless and I wish him the best

Who cares? I'm sure he'll look a lot better now that he's "coaching" Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco.

I admit it, I have no idea what to expect from him going forward. The guy wasn't a coach at this level for nearly seven years for nothing and anyone who's played any competitive team sport understands no matter how good your coaches and management is, meltdowns like we saw in Washington are going to happen, especially when the talent was as thin as it was there in 2009. Could someone else have held them together better, longer, I suppose Mr. Perfect is out there somewhere but I really don't know how to assign blame for what happened. We'll find out pretty quickly.

Expos/Nationals starting pitching staff's ERA's under St. Claire's watch, consisting of all pitchers totaling 10 starts or more in each season:

2003: 3.71

2004: 4.33

2005: 3.91

2006: 5.34

2007: 4.67

2008: 4.74

2009: 4.93

Nothing sexy about this hiring....It is what it is, Loria has been fairly loyal to his old troop. Let's hope he can do the job. Let's see if he can handle young pitching

My one cncern about his hiring is eaxactly that- that he's one of "loria's guys." Toroborg was "his guy" as well, and we know how that ended.

He passed away in 2003, drug overdose, sadly, one of my all-time favorites as a kid really

Not particularly thrilled by this, but I figured it would happen since we couldn't get any of the top candidates available.

Is this really that significant? Honest question.

Much less so than the manager. We have nightly "fire Fredi!" threads for a reason around here.

How do you figure? The manager is the one making the decisions during the game.

St. Claire is not getting anyone excited here because the Washington Nationals didn't put up good #'s. Well...the Washington Nationals staff sucks. He's going to look a lot better now...b/c the Marlins are more talented. As is the case with the good majority of pitching/hitting coaches.

This isn't going to cost us our season. People keep saying "I wanted this guy." Why? Like I could understand with Leo Mazzone b/c he has a resume having success with certain pitchers. I could understand wanting a Dave Duncan. Even a Rick Peterson. But after that, are there really any pitching coaches who have made a drastic difference in improvement, working with staffs over the years?

I'm sure St. Claire is just happy he gets to "coach" the likes of Josh Johnson now.

I don't see your point.

It seems that the only people who have a strong reaction to this (and this is still an overstatemnt) are those who were hoping that the Marlins could have landed one of the name coaches with a proven track record. There were a lot of names being thrown around. The Marlins failed to attract one of the top tier coaches so they are settling with St. Claire. As I've said already (and many people seem to be of the same mentality), I'm willing to give St. Claire the benefit of the doubt on account of him having no talent to work with in Montreal/Washington.

I guess I just don't see why you are criticizing. I just see a bunch of lukewarm reactions to this hiring because there were better names and the Fish couldn't real them in.

And my previous post regarding the Fredi threads was sarcasm.

I guess that would be a pretty fair assesment. But I think the only one to get excited about would have been Peterson. Looks more like he wanted to be reunited with Randolph and Macha. At least according to his comments after he signed that 2 year deal. And with the exception of Fox (and a few posters here), no one has been or is very interested in Leo. That's pretty telling in itself. And it's not "everyone in the world is stupid except me." Rosey didn't want the job, another that I wouldn't have squacked about. Sooooo.......Welcome to the team Randy.

As far as BP coach I would think we promote from within. Actually be surprised if we didn't. Mitchell here and Cornelius to AAA. Who fills in at Jax may come from outside, be we shall see. If this scenario turns out to be true then I wouldn't be opposed seeing if we could lure Harvey over here.

Even if it was only for a sliver of time Harvey was our Nolan Ryan, Bob Gibson kind of overpowering and intimidating guy and I would love to see that instilled in our pitching prospects (which is not to say I know anything about his coaching abilities)coming up through the system. I watch our young guys and this is purely my own thing but I seldom except for Ricky who exudes it and Josh sometimes, see that intimidating "I'm the guy who's goin' get you out" demeanor (not just facial expressions but body language as well) rather you see the "politeness" of a Sean West or RVH.

The "attitude" has to be matched up with ability of course but sometimes believing in your abilities is a step in the right direction when it comes to competing at the major league level.

I agree to an extent, but don't you think that Harvey would be better suited for the bullpen coach position?

Have their been any rumored candidates yet for this job? I've only heard Harvey's name for pitching coach.

Honestly Pengie, I don't know what he's good or not good at but his approach to getting the job done when he was a playing is what I was commenting on. I'd like to see more of that introduced to kids sooner rather than later throughout the system but if he's capable of being the guy in the bullpen I have no problem whatsoever with him coaching there. He might be the first autograph I sought out in twenty-five years if he was out there.
