Marlins sign pitcher Tanyon Sturtze

Associated Press

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Marlins signed Tanyon Sturtze to a minor league contract Tuesday, hoping the big right-hander might help their bullpen.

Sturtze asked for and received his release from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday after giving up 18 hits and posting a 9.00 ERA in 11 innings this spring.

The 6-foot-5 Sturtze started last season in Toronto's rotation but was moved to the bullpen after eight starts. He finished 7-6 with a 5.94 ERA.

``My career's been up and down, inconsistent,'' he said. ``I'm just trying to bounce back.''

Sturtze, 33, spent three years with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, starting 65 games and becoming their No. 1 starter in 2002. That season, he went 4-18 with a 5.18 ERA and became the first pitcher to lead the AL in losses, hits allowed (271), runs (141) and walks (89).

He went 15 starts before his first win, allowed a team-record 33 home runs and gave up more than 10 hits six times.

``It seemed like every time something would happen and I would end up taking the loss,'' Sturtze said. ``Things kept piling up. It started to look really bad, but I didn't throw the ball that poorly.''

Although Sturtze probably will start the season at Triple-A Albuquerque, the Marlins expect he might be able to help soon. Relievers Blaine Neal and Nate Bump have had uneven springs and will need to improve to secure roster spots.

i hope he doesn't take a spot away from someone in 3-4 days because it said he wouldn't go to minors just be released. Cant we do better than this. His stats are probably just as good or bad depending on how u look at it as the guys we already have.

beckett's been sent down to Carolina :D

you got to be kidding right, this guy sucks and he's not getting any younger...there is no upside here,he's already been as good as he's going to get...o'yea that part about his career being up and down,i thought that was pretty funny and at the same time sad..

I agree...I have not seen anything in his game that shows me he will help us.

That being said it's a veteran signed to a minor league contract....he can only surprise and help, otherwise we will never see him in Florida.

Geez, is this the best relief help we can find? We're better off with what we already have. Why are they throwing away a dime on this guy?

how about you guys just give the guy a chance?

jeez

when you are on the cheap....

you take what you can get.

that being said...for the most part tanyon sucks.

maybe he can do something for this team...surely he is better than some of the junk in the pen right now.

Wasnt there a veteran pitcher the Marlins signed last year in his 30's who had been a starter with a pretty high ERA (around 6.00 i believe), his name was Rick Helling and he did a good job for us when we called on him so dont start badmouthing this move until we see the results.

I believe Helling did have one Monster year though. That's something more than Sturtze has had.

It doesn't matter, he won't make the team anyways. He has pitched worse this spring than any of our pitchers that are in the running for the bullpen spots. That said the move can't hurt us so why not take a chance on the guy.

Sturtze.....................wasn't

Give him a shot though, can't hurt.

yea at least helling had his good years...this guy has never had a good year and every time he gets on the mound its like the fourth of july....very disapointed as a fan that really wants this team to do good...i mean as a mgr. can i trust to bring this guy in with either a 1 run lead or a tie game....i wouldnt...

Ramp,

I hope he impresses enough to join the big team. I hope he proves to be an excellent middle reliever for us. I'm not rooting against him. But why are we knocking him so fast?

A 33 year old pitcher with declining numbers usually leads to one thing....more declining numbers.

Looks like Beinfest is trying to collect bodies like last year. One of them has to surprise...the odds are for it.

yea but dont collect dead bodies....the starters are going to go 6 or seven good inning leave the lead to the bullpen and there going to blow it...

Oh yeah, Sturtze is a real jewel.....

:banghead :banghead :banghead

We'll be fortunate if he never makes it out of Albuquerque.

FLORIDA

J Beckett (L,1-4) 5 8 2 2 1 3 0

J Wayne 1 0 1 1 2 0 0

M Perisho 1 0 0 0 0 0 0

T Sturtze 2 6 5 4 0 1 1

As we were saying...this is why we are not high on Tanyon Sturtze :)

I think this was a good pick up.

He is a veteran and i think he can help us alot in the bullpen when ever he gets called up, or if he makes ST.

I still wished we could of gotten Jorge Sosa or Columne (from the devilrays). :D
