April 21, 200422 yr the biggest concern I have about the location (besides their lease deal obviously) is traffic. if they can get people in & out of there without causing the city to grind to a halt, that's a big part of it. I mean you can get there from 836 but that's a nightmare during the week. public transit could play a big role. Joe Sanchez the city commissioner has admitted in the past there may be problems with the traffic jams that already clog the area during UM games. But the county is already planning to extend the Metrorail to Miami International Airport, and could easily add a stop near the stadium. That might be a big help. But people sure do love their cars...
April 21, 200422 yr I don't get it, you people from PBC are complaining cause of the OB site? Would you seriously rather have the FISH out of Florida? Or nevermind that, would you rather have another firesale and have acrappy team with a crappy lease at ProPlayer. Jeez, I have said this many times already and I will say it again, we are LUCKY to have had a franchise that brought us 2 World Championships in 7 years, not many cities can say that. Also Loria has done nothing but positive things since he arrived and everyone in this city is bad mouthing him and the team. I realize as a fan you guys want the team closer to your neighborhoods but that is probably not possible financially. Be happy we are kee[ping the team and be positive that they will completely renovate the area and make it more FAN friendly, I am sure they will consider parking and transportation problems as part of the renovations int he area. For crying out loud thi sis becoming rediculous in this board already, we are all FANS of the same team here!

That would be a big help Yeah but how long is that going to take? We all know how construction crews love to take their sweet time when it comes to adding and improving public transit. If they can get this done before a stadium gets built or a year or two after its completed, then thats not bad. However if it takes them longer then that, boy o boy, are we going to hear crying. :mad :
April 21, 200422 yr no i totally agree there. moreover i don't see that there's a lot of room to do all this expansion regardless. they need to widen roads, add a metro stop, access ramps, etc.

April 21, 200422 yr PEOPLE DO NOT USE PUBLIC TRANSIT. Now, you all are going to cry foul and say public transit is great, and that you use it all the time, yada yada, which is great, good for you. But for the fans they are targeting (ie mom, dad and the 2 kids in the minivan) they are not going to drive to a metrorail station, then get their whole family on a train. Public transit would be a positive factor if you weretrying to attract students, lower middle income fans, or urban residents. But that isn't who the Fish are after.
April 21, 200422 yr I've pointed it out before that adding mass transit will do nothing to help the fan base from the north. The Tr-Rail stops service prior to the end of night games. Thus adding a metrorail stop would only service Miami-Dade residents, who arguably would not need the mass transit to attend the games anyway.

Well by having the MASS transit option available it free's up some of the traffic and parking issues because those who CAN take the Mass transit probably will, that fee up more room for the families with MiniVans and what not.
April 21, 200422 yr It's in bad part of town - people just don't feel safe. Um, that doesn't stop people from going to the Triple A to see Heat games. Which is a very very very bad location.

I always see families use it on my way to Heat games. Even on my way back from Heat games late at night, they are packed with families/students/"regular people". Geez, some people just live in litte boxes these days!
April 21, 200422 yr 15 minutes each way....HA. 30 minutes each way buddy and if we start drawing crowds then go ahead and tack on 45 Then STAY HOME you pathetic whiner! I live in Palm Beach County and would look forward to a stadium at the Orange Bowl site. First off, I would not drive there. I would merely park my car over at the Palmetto Metrorail station and take the train in (just like I used to do when I lived in Miami and took the Metrorail to Dolphins games before they moved). Most of you people are pathetic. If the stadium isn't built within 5 minutes of your house in Plantation, Tamarac, Hollywood, Coral Springs, Lauderhill, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach, Coconut Creek, Sunrise, Davie, Cooper City, Dania.... then you complain that you have to drive. Last time I checked, you've got to drive ANYWHERE in South Florida. And stemming from the first post in this thread, I know where a lot of you "Broward People" are coming from. If you don't see "white" people, or people who don't speak English, then you automatically assume that it is a bad neighborhood, that it is dangerous. I don't even have to say what that makes you! The OB site is not ideal, I know, but beggars can't be choosers. Not once did a single municipality in Broward come up with a financing plan or land to donate! And Commissioners Parrish and Lieberman of the Broward County Commission personally told the Plantation City Commission in a meeting I attended that the County has NO MONEY for a ballpark. They said that the Panthers and Huizenga burned them with the "Rent-a-Center" and that they just didn't have the wherewithall to do it again! So quit your whining about the location of the stadium. If it's the OB site, then be glad it is the OB. Most of you idiots who complain and say a move to Orlando would be better are just cutting of your noses to spite your face! If the new ballpark causes the creation of a ballpark village like in Denver, Cleveland, Boston, Chicago, and Seattle, all the better. Best post I've read since I joined the forum. If a stadium is eventually built at the OB, then we'll know how dedicated Broward and PB County fans really are. Up to now, most that I've talked to and heard are extremely provincial and won't support the team in Miami (at least not as much as before), much less if the team becomes the Miami Marlins. As far as the stadium bringing providing stimulus to the area, I don't think the stadium alone is going to do it. Camden Yards is more than the stadium, it was built as part of a larger plan to renovate Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The Miami Arena did nothing to bring life to Overtown because it was all by itself. One thing that is beginning to happen is the development of the riverfront which is just blocks from the OB. This could be used in conjunction with the stadium to revitalize the area if smart planning is done.
April 21, 200422 yr But for the fans they are targeting (ie mom, dad and the 2 kids in the minivan) they are not going to drive to a metrorail station, then get their whole family on a train. Thats funny, isn't that it used to work for the Heat and Panthers when they were both in the Miami Arena and its how alot of people still get to the AAA? :mischief2

I'll be taking it tonight for the Heat game, although I'm going by myself.
April 21, 200422 yr Traveling in some cases is just another excuse. If you can find the time to do it during the week and you living in Broward or even anywhere in Dade, you will find a way to this stadium if you love the Marlins. Its as simple as that. :thumbup
April 21, 200422 yr That is just flat out wrong about people not using mass transit. When the Heat and Panthers played next to the Metrorail station, the trains before and after the games were full of all kinds of "regular people." It actually was a great atmosphere riding the train before a game because it created a buzz you cant get in your car. Obviously, some would rather drive, but to say people dont use mass transit is inaccurate.

If these people showed up to see the Heat AND Panthers play at the Miami Arena, whats make people think that they won't do the same to go see the Marlins?
April 21, 200422 yr A Metrorail extension will be nice for people who work downtown. The site is not ideal, but we may not have that many options. I can understand the plight of the Broward and PB fans but reality is a centraly located site in the tri-county area is not going to happen. Some fans from those areas will be lost and some fans in south west dade will be gained. there are a ton of wealthy people who live in SW dade who can't reasonably get to JRS @ 7pm on a weeknight that will n ow get tix. April 21, 200422 yr Author Zoinks! I surely didn't want to upset so many of you folks. And I definitely didn't want people attacking each other personally. As for me and my comments about going to far fewer games, I should re-phrase and say that I just know that I wouldn't be able to make it to the games. I really don't like getting to the game into the 2nd or 3rd inning and getting there after work in time for the first pitch would be next to impossible. This comment wasn't about choosing not go, just that I probably couldn't. As for the rest of my sentiment, it is a cross between my opinion having gone to the Orange Bowl and the opinions of people I know. The location may not be in a high crime neighborhood, but the perception is that it is. This will keep people away. That?s just a fact ? it is an unfortunate one and not one I agree with - but it is a fact. The location will also keep people from Broward and PB (and even some from Dade) away ? due to distance, traffic, and parking. Let me also say that I?m thrilled to have the Marlins here. I?ve been a fan since day one and I certainly want them to stay at any cost. We can?t have everything, but we can hope for the best. The OB isn?t the best and I would hate to have to settle. Putting a new Marlins stadium at the OB site, is settling.
April 21, 200422 yr Just one comment, and is not directed towards anyone. A location like Portlant, DC, Las Vegas, specify name here won't be accesible by Broward, Dade or PB. Do you like that better than the OB?
April 21, 200422 yr Just one comment, and is not directed towards anyone. A location like Portlant, DC, Las Vegas, specify name here won't be accesible by Broward, Dade or PB. Do you like that better than the OB? argument done and done with that quote right there
April 21, 200422 yr Just one comment, and is not directed towards anyone. A location like Portlant, DC, Las Vegas, specify name here won't be accesible by Broward, Dade or PB. Do you like that better than the OB? Juvenile. Anyway, the problem I have is that this location, like PBMarlins said, is settling for the only option currently available. It is not very hard to envision this same very arguement being held 10 or 12 years from now when the Marlins want another new stadium because the one they secured in 2004 was forced upon them as the only real option at the time, has no parking and isn't easily accessible. As for the mass transit, you all can tell me stories and provide as much anecdotal evidence you want about how many people you see on the trains, etc.... Look at the statistics nationwide. No one rides public transit unless it is the only option avaiable to them. As for the location itself, once again I think settling for an option that is thrust upon you is a little disconcerting. I know alot of MDC fans go now, but alot has to be said for N Broward and S PBC fans who will not go. Baseball is competing for hte entertainement dollar, and driving 45mins to an hour for a game just isn't all that practical. Now, I know this board is full of die hards who will go no matter what, but you all are missing the point. The Marlins are not trying to make sure people like you go to the games. You'll go regardless. They are trying to secure the attendance of people who will and do use traffic, parking, crime etc... as reasons not to go with their families.
April 21, 200422 yr People from PBC and Broward should quit their complaining and write to their congressmen and selectmen to put something on the table resembling what Dade County and Miami have done if they want a stadium close by.

No thanks. We know that publicly financing stadiums is a losing proposition when it comes to making money. You guys can jump on the grenade down there.

I guess you have 0 trust in Loria and the Marlins FO. They are not perfect, but I think they have demonstrated that they are competent. Don't you think they know what other options are available? If you or I don't know if something else has been proposed or pursued, doesn't it hasn't been considered and it is better than the OB proposal. The OB site can work if done right. I agree that as is the site won't work. Why not wait till we have all the details before we hammer this to death?

If you or I don't know if something else has been proposed or pursued, doesn't it hasn't been considered and it is better than the OB proposal. I think they know exactly what they are doing. They targeted sites and financial subsidies that were unattainable so that public sentiment would grow for them as they repeadedly got shot down. Then they would count on the public being so exasperated at the lack of political support that they would accept a stadium just about anywhere as long as it got done. And here we are today, with you all throwing the baby out with the bathwater because you are so pleased at the very notion that there will be a new stadium, regardless of where it is.
