oh and go ahead and call me a loser again :thumbup It was a joke, man.

I dont like the idea of Willis out of the pen. The main reason behind this is because of the way Willis pitches, usually after a couple innings he gets into a groove and if hes coming into a game late than he wont have time to do this. Phelps had an incrediable game tonight (points to avatar) but I think that he will be more of an asset for us out of the bullpen where only a couple guys have stepped up as reliable guys. :thumbup

If Phelps can continue like tonight, and Burnett is as dominant as he once was, it could work. Willis as a set-up man could work too. I think batters have figured him out.

I totally agree!

So wouldn't Willis just be pitching his bad 1st and 2nd innings in the bullpen before coming out showing us his 4th and 5th inning stuff? I don't know. You really can't say. Pitchers pitch differently in each situation they come into.

That said until Willis learns another pitch he only has the stuff to be an excellent reliever or an average starter.

No one's going to expect Phelps to pitch as well as he did today every start, but I think he can be more consistant than Willis and probably have an ERA around 4.00-4.50. I'd take that, and I would love to see what Willis can do in the pen. If Tommy pitches well again in his next start, I would like to see Jack at least try it.

Sometimes I'm at a loss to understand the reasoning used on this board.

Phelps will make an acceptable fifth starter with an ERA around 4.50.

Willis has an ERA just under that number (4.38), and he's an unacceptable fifth starter?

I repeat, Dontrelle just needs to be our extremely energetic FIFTH STARTER. Not our ace, not our #2, not even our #3 or 4 our #5 guy, the last guy in the rotation, the guy who when the post-season starts, you're not guaranteed a start! lol. Leave the guy in the rotation, and here's why: look at today, Phelps' arm wouldn't let him get past the 7th, getting there was even a stretch. Willis, when he pitches like that, can go all 9. Phelps isn't going to toss a 1 hitter everyday, and honestly, he just benefitted from a case of overswinging. A soft tosser like Phelps either gets a ton of groundballs or a ton of homeruns, luckily, we got the former today.

Honestly, I'm more worried about Beckett, an ERA that's essentially 4 for our #1 isn't too good. He needs to get it together more than Willis.

Only been one start!

People bash people who think Nunez has potential but are jumping in the bandwagon after only one start(Phelps)!

I'm not trying to take anything away from Phelp who had an outstanding game but it was just one start.Willis has shown flashes of greatness. He just need to work on his control more because is the only thing stoping him from becoming the above average pitcher.

I can't believe the mood swings of some of you. One good game by Phelps, and you want to send Willis to the pen. I think anything is possible, but how about we wait 2 -3 weeks and see what happens?

FreshFish, I happen to agree.

Willis pitched better in his last start than the numbers indicate. He was betrayed by horrendous defense, namely Cabrera's in right field. There was much comment about it here. In the start before that he pitched a terrific game, looking like the Willis of old.

That said, DW still has to prove himself capable of providing quality starts on a regular basis. Three or four more starts may seal his fate. I for one think he'll come through it with flying colors and take his place as the Marlins fifth starter for the rest of the season.

Phelps is a personal favorite of mine. He was great with my kid at FanFest and nothing pleased us more than to see Tommy throw one h*lluva game tonight. I hope he keeps doing it. It may be that his successes this season turn out to be his audition to be the fifth starter in 2005.

Honestly, I'm more worried about Beckett, an ERA that's essentially 4 for our #1 isn't too good. He needs to get it together more than Willis. My point is and has always been that I think Dontrelle could be exceptional out of the pen. I think he could be a guy who comes in the 8th inning and shuts people down. A guy who could pitch 1 or 2 innings to bridge the gap between the starters and Benitez.

Dontrelle should go to the pen. It may sound simplistic, but I too think that the cat is out of the bag now that everyone has seen him. And the end of all the unconventional knee-jerks and back-bending delivery there just isn't enough mystery with the actual pitches. He needs to learn another pitch.

And backing Phelps isn't a knee jerk reation to tonite. I don't think he'll go out and throw shut outs all the time, but I also don't think more than half his starts are going to be the shelled train-wrecks that Dontrelle is highly succeptible to.

Just keep us in the game and don;t let the wheels fall of in the first three innings... That's all I ask out of Phelps.

am not jumping on the phelps wagon, like ramp has said already i also expect tommy to get rocked next start...of course i hope he comes in next start and throws another gem...as for willis please put him in the pen like ive been saying since the begining of the season...

if willis starts to struggle he could find himself in the pen, phelps of course would replace him.

No. Phelps replaced Oliver. Willis is fine and should just be concerned with his next start. You dont win 14 games and maintain a low 3 ERA for nothing. He is good and can pitch at this level.

Be patient.

This quote is from the Miami Herald....

Should Phelps pitch the same way in his next start, manager Jack McKeon said there's even a chance he might not get bumped back to the bullpen when A.J. Burnett comes off the disabled list.

''You never know,'' McKeon said. ``There's always that option.''

After AJ gets back, Willis & Phelps will have each gotten another start.

If the trend continues, it's gonna get interesting.

I wouldn't send Willis to the pen just yet, but Phelps putting up a good showing can only help the team. If Dontrelle falls into a long slide, I don't have a problem with giving Tommy a few more starts.

I really hate sending starters to the Bullpen but i think Willis is better suited to relief than to start. Willis is good for a couple of innings and then struggles. Bullpen would be my choice.

People bash people who think Nunez has potential but are jumping in the bandwagon after only one start(Phelps)!

The difference is that Phelps has a history of doing well in the major leagues, Nunez doesn't.

If the trend Willis is on continues this weekend I think he's stamped his ticket to the bullpen. And that won't be a demotion. Just think, every since Fox went down we've been missing that second great bullpen arm to go along with Benitez. Willis can provide that, Phelps can't, but Phelps can be just as a good of a starter (this year atleast).

Of course Willis can't be wasted in the pen. Like someone said earlier as a 5th starter he would be better than most in the league. His problem is inconsistency not that hes been figured out. He has 2 pitches if he cant establish the breaking pitch he'll either walk everybody or theyll keep making hits off the fastball, which isnt spectacular. Hes young and has room for improvement. He has not struggled so much that he needs to be sent down, but sending him to the pen now is wasting an arm that could give you very solid work as we have seen last season (1st half) and in some games this season. It is absurd to say that willis and his era slighlty over 4 is "doing as bad" as oliver and his era over 7.00. If willis continues to struggle you send him to the minors to work on his stuff and maybe try to develop another pitch. Remember that Brad Penny was inconsistent his first 2 years also and was able to work through it. Willis in the bullpen - no way.

The predominant responsibility of bullpen pitcher is to throw strikes. DW isn't there yet. As a starter he can fumble through a few walks and still survive, but I'm not sure he can with the game on the line in inning 7-8.
