August 7, 200422 yr from the PB Post: All-Star catcher Paul LoDuca traded to Florida by the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 30, apparently wont be just a short term solution for the marlins. LoDuca said Friday that the owner Jeffrey Loria told him last weekend the marlins want to atleast sign him through next year. LoDuca, 32, is making $4.1 million this year and could double that through arbitration next year. The Marlins have 2 cost saving options in either trading LoDuca after the season or not tendering him a contract, which would allow him to be a Free agent. But LoDuca is under the impression he'll be playing for the marlins in 2005. "It was awesome," LoDuca said of his conversation with Loria. "They have some great arms and I want to be a part of that."
August 7, 200422 yr Ooooh man I hope this is the real deal! Loria I would kiss your feet! With cheese on it! ON FEAR FACTOR!!! - Thanks Shaq for the quote
August 7, 200422 yr Wow. Awesome. He's become a fan favorite so quickly, he brings so much to the field and the clubhouse...even though I was a doubter at first, good choice.
August 7, 200422 yr Lo Duca has already shown that he sparks it. As soon as the pitching staff is in order again, I think we may become the team to beat. Our offense has actually been consistently good lately. Now we need that same kind of consistency from our pitchers.
August 7, 200422 yr :plain It better not be at the expense of Pavano, Burnett or Beckett. 500562 True...don't mess with our arms anymore...they're very hard to come by!
August 7, 200422 yr I see him getting a one year deal at 5-6 mil. IF Encarnacion is traded then I can see Pavano being resigned if not then bye bye
August 7, 200422 yr I see him getting a one year deal at 5-6 mil. IF Encarnacion is traded then I can see Pavano being resigned if not then bye bye 500593 Enc will definitely be traded then....if we lose Pavano, that leaves us with 3 good starters.
August 7, 200422 yr :plain It better not be at the expense of Pavano, Burnett or Beckett. 500562 Ditto
August 7, 200422 yr :plain It better not be at the expense of Pavano, Burnett or Beckett. 500562 It is at the expense of Brad Penny and possibly Armando Benitez.
August 7, 200422 yr :plain It better not be at the expense of Pavano, Burnett or Beckett. 500562 It is at the expense of Brad Penny and possibly Armando Benitez. 500762 :lol You sure are optimistic, but if Lo Duca makes anything more than $5 million next year there's no way we resign both Lo Duca and Pavano. If Enc isn't traded there's no way Lo Duca will be back either way.
August 7, 200422 yr Mando was probably a goner anyway, the way he's pitching so far he's guaranteed himself a big raise.
August 7, 200422 yr Mando was probably a goner anyway, the way he's pitching so far he's guaranteed himself a big raise. 500773 He most certainly will get a raise.
August 7, 200422 yr Resign Pavano and Lo Duca. Trade Enc to Colorado for a bag of balls and some bubble gum. Try to recruit Paul Wilson to come back to his home state and recapture the magic he had at Florida State. Pavano, Burnett, Beckett, Wilson, Willis sounds like a good rotation to me. :thumbup
August 7, 200422 yr Trade Enc to Colorado for a bag of balls and some bubble gum. The last time the marlins did that, he wound up here again.
August 7, 200422 yr i dont see juan here next year....i would love it if duca is here for 1-2 years more....he is such a team leader... and if we have to trade an arm for whatever reason....go with beckett... really hope we have armando next yr.to team with mota for the 8th and 9th innings.
August 7, 200422 yr Trade Enc to Colorado for a bag of balls and some bubble gum. The last time the marlins did that, he wound up here again. 500835 Yeah, but we can try again. LA didn't give us enough balls in the trade this off season. Perhaps Colorado could kick in an extra bag.
August 7, 200422 yr SIGNED THROUGH 2005 (in millions) Castillo 5.33 Conine 4.75 Gonzalez 3.4 Lowell 8 Pierre 3.4 Encarnacion 4 (2 by the Marlins) Hampton 11 Pudge 2 41.88 ARBITRATION ELIGIBLE with projected range Beckett 2-4 Burnett 3-5 LoDuca 5-8 Mota 3-4 Redmond 0-2 (Has service time to be FA, but not listed on any sites as) FREE AGENTS Benitez, Cordero, Easley, Fox, Harris, Koch, Mordecai, Pavano, Valdez To meet a 60 (65 if we make the playoffs) million payroll... it's probably going to have to be LoDuca or one of big four pitchers. All I'm saying is Redmond/Willingham/Treanor/Castro >>> Bump, Wayne. I like both Wayne and Bump, but we can't depend on them to be consistent 4th and 5th starters. The catcher platoon would atleast be decent. I also think only one of the relief corps (Benitez, Mota, Koch) will be back. They all want to be closers and there's plenty of teams that will give them a chance, Koch included. I am optimisitc that if we continue to play Encarnacion, Beinfest will be able to find someone to pay for his 2005 contract.

If Enc isn't traded there's no way Lo Duca will be back either way. 500771 In 2005 Hampton and Pudge's deals roll off our payroll I believe. That is approximately $13MM or so. We have lost Penny and Choi contract and will Benitez so that's $8M or so. Double that $8M to cover 2004 and 2005 and the grab total becomes $29MM. Pavano and LoDuca can be had for $29 over the next two seasons. I could see Pavano backend a 3-year deal $23M deal. (7M-8M-8M). I could see LoDuca sign a 2-year $14MM deal. That's how Benitez, Penny and Choi become LoDuca and Pavano
August 8, 200422 yr Pudge and Hampton are gone for 2006 for good, but we could also defer the salaries to later years.
August 8, 200422 yr Double that $8M to cover 2004 and 2005 and the grab total becomes $29MM. 501020 You think Loria has an extra $8 million?
August 8, 200422 yr Double that $8M to cover 2004 and 2005 and the grab total becomes $29MM. 501020 You think Loria has an extra $8 million? 501036 No, what I am looking at is 2005 and 2006 combined..my mistake on the years. The money spent on Penny, BBenitez and Choi this year is $8M. I am saying that $8M will be spent in 2005 AND 2006. In 2006 you then add another $13MM from contracts that roll off the payroll. So for those two years you have $29MM to spend.
August 8, 200422 yr Why can you guys not think creatively and realize that we can always defer Pavano and Lo Duca's salaries as well as Benitez onto 2006's payroll when the Pudge/Hampton $13-14 million is gone. If Pavano and Lo Duca each make $7.5 million a year on 3 year deals, we can defer $3.5 million of 2005's salary and pay them in 2006. That means that after everything is said and done, the Marlins will have about $6 million in 2006 to spend from the Pudge/Hampton money.
