When they last faced Mark Prior and Kerry Wood in back-to-back games, the Florida Marlins beat both aces to reach the World Series.

A lot less is on the line this time, but if the Marlins can pull off that feat again, Cubs fans might get much more nervous about their playoff hopes.

With both teams in the thick of the wild card race, Florida and Chicago meet for the first time since last year's NL championship series with a doubleheader at Wrigley Field.

``The way I look at it is we're in the playoffs,'' Wood said. ``This is a playoff atmosphere, it's playoff time. We have to treat every game like it's a playoff game.''

The teams were supposed to play a three-game set in Miami last weekend, but Hurricane Frances forced the series to be postponed. They will play four games this weekend at Wrigley before returning to Florida for another twinbill on Sept. 20.

That means each team could play a big role in the other's wild card hopes.

Chicago held the wild card lead until being passed by Houston and San Francisco this week. Florida made it a five-team race -- along with San Diego -- by reeling off nine straight wins before Thursday's 4-0 loss to the New York Mets.

``Every game is big,'' Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee said. ``It's as simple as that. Four or five teams are in it, 20-odd games left. We've got to find a way to win as many games as possible.''

Lee was with the Marlins last season when they went to Chicago in the NLCS facing a 3-2 series deficit. Florida beat Prior to win 8-3 in Game 6, remembered most for Cubs fan Steve Bartman preventing Moises Alou from catching a foul ball during the Marlins' eighth-inning rally. The Marlins went on to rip Wood for seven runs the next day to win Game 7, 9-6.

Though Cubs manager Dusty Baker has not officially said which one will start the opener, Prior and Wood are his starters for this doubleheader. Baker needs strong efforts from both because his team needs a boost of confidence, having lost six of nine games.

``We all know what's at stake -- the whole town, the team,'' Baker said. ``We certainly have to play better against Florida.''

One of the biggest surprises of Florida's championship run last year was the solid pitching of Carl Pavano, and he's carried that success into 2004 to become a Cy Young Award candidate. He'll start the first game Friday, looking for his fifth straight win and his 17th of the season, which would match a franchise record and tie Houston's Roy Oswalt for the NL lead.

``He might be the first to get there, and he's probably the least heralded,'' Florida manager Jack McKeon said of Pavano possibly reaching the 20-win plateau.

While Pavano, Prior and Wood have all been involved in pressure-packed games, the other starter isn't even familiar with pitching in the majors.

Because bad weather has forced a flurry of doubleheaders on the Marlins, they called up Logan Kensing from Class A Jupiter to make his big league debut. The 22-year-old right-hander was a second-round pick last year out of Texas A&M.

``It'll be a storm of emotions,'' Kensing said. ``I'll try to keep them at bay.''

mid september double header on a friday afternoon to start a huge series with playoff implications.

Man, I'm still mad that they switched the 2nd game to PAX. I wanted to see Kensing's debut. Not to mention the fact I've only been able to watch 1 game on tv in about 10 days.

i just want to make sure.
