Should a Prez have to be born in the U.S?

Featured Replies

Obviously this is only coming up because of Ahnold... but nevertheless. A Republican Rep from CA is proposing an amendment to the constitution that would allow a foreign-born to run for president as long as they'd been a citizen for 20 years. How do you come up with a number for this?

19 years = not a real american

20 years = presidential material

Oh wait I see.... 20 years would be just long enough for oh I dunno.... Schwartzeneggar! What a coincidence!

Orin Hatch has introduced similar legislation in the Senate.

Arnold should NEVER become President of the United States

Only American born citizens should be able to become POTUS

I agree.

i agree with that big, yellow bird.

I agree that the Constitution's current wording should stay the same. I wouldn't want Ahnold as president anyway.

I think allowing naturalized citizens to become president would take away from the honor of being president. I've never heard of any other country that allows that sort of thing.

you'd be surprised.

in india, italian-born sonia gandhi was essentially elected prime minister when her party won national elections, though she ultimately turned it down to duck the controversy.

in order to become President of the United States you need to be born a citizen of the United States.

period.

next.

yes

Arnold will never win? Guess again. But no they shouldnt make it an amendment. The thing is plenty of naturalized citizens are also dual citizens and are as loyal to their other nations as they are to the states. But aside from that birth in the US should be essential

Isnt it a wee bit unfair that a person who moved here when he was 2, lived here for 50 years, and is pretty much an American cant run for President but a person who was born here, moved to France and lived there their entire life, and them came back can run for President?

Although it would benefit me ( :mischief ) to have such a law enacted, I sincerely think it is a very risky thing to do. I think that to be President the person must be born and RAISED in the country it intends to run. I wouldn't like to have a President that doesn't know or connect entirely with American culture. Arnold may be a cool guy and all, but he is still an Austrian and he thinks Richard Nixon was a "great" President, because he came from a country that was invaded by Nazis... I don't know I just don't trust someone who hasn't lived throughout the difficult and good times this nation has faced.

It may sound weird coming from me, but I prefer my President to be an all American kid. I could understand if the person was brought here as a child, maybe then it would not be so difficult to accept, but I don't think Arnold fits that mold... sorry Reps.

theres certain laws against that as well. I think you have to have been living here for at least 14 consecutive years before you run for presidency, and also u have to be at least 35 with a certain percentage of those years being a resident of the US

They'd have to have comeback 14 years before they run for President though.

I agree with the Constitution now, I prefer the President to have been born here. Maybe it isn't 21st century to think this way, but who says the Constitution has to change just because Ahnald would be President? I wouldn't mind him at top at all, but he wasn't born here, sorry.

The only amendment to change this I would be in favor of is that you would have had to move here when you were ten or earlier. That is early on enough in the child's life that they are basically raised here.

How do you come up with a number for this?

Why should someone have to be 35 years old to be president?

35 years old = presidential material

34 years old = not presidential material

Why should someone have to be 16 and not 15 to get their drivers license? Why should someone have to be 21 to drink alcohol but not 20? Why is there a 3 day waiting period when buying a firearm, why not 4 days!!?!?!?!?

As you just saw, this is very ridiculous logic.

I'd love to see Arnold become the president, but it would never happen even if an amendment did pass. From all the stuff about him groping women to his quotes from his early days where he said things like hitler was a great leader, he has too many skeletons in the closet and it may have been enough to become a governor, but no amount of movie lines will be able to overshadow all the dirt on him in a 2 year long presidential race.

Can you imagine the negative campaign that would be run by the dems against arnie?

"DO YOU THINK THIS MAN WAS A GREAT LEADER?" *flahes a picture of hitler*

"ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER DOES!" *flashes an unflattering black&white picture of arnie from a workout video*

Well, the founding fathers basically pulled 35 out of their asses.

As you learn more and more about the Constitutional Convention of 1787, you find out that alot of the stuff we hold paramount was the founding fathers doing the funniest things. They invented the 25, 30, and 35 numbers out of no where. Also, you know how the Senate is divided so only a third is up for election at a time? They drew straws to decide how it was done. Most of the powers of the presidency exist because they knew George Washington was going to occupy the position, they basically drew it up around him. That's why we have a civilian commander in chief.

Too bad we didn't adopt German as our official language. Imagine how different America would be...

F_M brings up a good point.

Can't let a guy that lived in France be president. :plain

j/k I agree with F_M on this.

We don't have an official language :thumbup

There's a bad precedent for letting foreign Austrians run your country.

I'll just leave it at that.

Heh, let's see how many people get this
