Pavano to the Yanks

Featured Replies

This is the least favorite place I would like to see him go.......

Yet, I still wish Carl the best and appreciate his efforts with the Marlins. He is a stand up guy, and I hope he does well through the rest of his career.

I truly believe Carl turned the corner last year and learned how to pitch to be successful. He doesn't have overpowering stuff, yet changes speed well and hits his spots....Now if he can only handle to pressure cooker situation in NY, he'll be alright.

I dont know why the Yanks will be pulling the trigger right now with maybe another chance at Randy Johnson.

Here is the NYPost article

December 11, 2004 -- ANAHEIM ? It appears the Yankees have bested the Red Sox in the first offseason fight.

According to multiple sources, Carl Pavano and the Yankees are drawing very close to getting a four-year deal worth about $42 million done.

Once believed to be staying with the Marlins, the right-handed pitcher is leaning toward joining the Yankees over the Red Sox.

Pavano, whose agent, Scott Shapiro, had a meeting with Yankee GM Brian Cashman last night at the winter meetings, visited Yankee Stadium last week.

"It's up to Carl now, all the offers are on the table," Shapiro said. "It could happen in an hour or in a week."

Originally it was believed Pavano couldn't do better than a three-year deal. But the market moved when Kris Benson got three years for $22.5 million from the Mets.

And Pavano had the Yankees fearful he would join Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez in the Red Sox rotation.

Pavano, 29 next month, was 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA for the Marlins last year. He is 57-58 lifetime.

Pavano isn't the only pitcher the Yankees and Red Sox are interested in.

With varying degrees of intensity, each club has expressed interest in Martinez and David Wells, and each is expected to listen to the A's, who are going to deal Tim Hudson shortly.

The competition doesn't extend to Randy Johnson, since the Yankees are the only team to which the Diamondbacks will trade him.

While the hotel-lobby buzz was about Martinez returning to Boston, Cashman didn't concede Martinez to the Red Sox, who offered a three-year deal worth $35.5 million. The Yankees haven't made an offer.

That brings us to Boomer III. The Red Sox have offered the 41-year-old Wells a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $6.5 million with $1.5 million in incentives. Wells has an offer to return to San Diego for a base of $4 million that could grow to $7 million. He turned down a one-year deal from the Phillies that could have been worth $6.1 million and a $6 million pact from the Indians.

Wells isn't a high priority for the Yankees. Yet, Cashman didn't rule him out if other things don't work. Eric Milton is looking for a three-year deal for $24 million, and the Yankees view him more in the same light as Jaret Wright's $21 million for three years.

"David called me on a friendly manner," said Cashman, who talked to Wells on Thursday. "He said he wasn't opposed to coming back if we had an interest. I said, 'I will get back to you.' I will leave it at that."

Wells' agent, Gregg Clifton, told reporters he sees Boston as "a natural fit" and was planning to move forward within 24 hours after consulting Wells.

"He really likes the make-up from the perspective that they're his kind of guys," Clifton said of the rowdy Bosox.

As for Hudson, it's believed the right-hander will be dealt before Monday. According to a source, the Red Sox "are being very aggressive" in trying to secure a third team to get into the fray that already has eight clubs jockeying to land the 29-year-old who was 12-6 with a 3.53 ERA last season. Hudson is due $6.7 million this coming season and is a free agent after it.

As long as it wasn't the Red Sox or anyone in the NL, I'm cool with it.

Wow, 5 first rounders, that's awesome.

As for Pavano I hope he enjoys playing in the hitters league. Remember that 1 st inning in Boston during 2003? :plain

Are we able to afford it?

the first rounders should help alot for trade bait....like if the marlins offer someone Enc. and they reject we can come back with how about enc. and a first rounder....

Where would these draft picks be? Who would we be getting them from?

1 from Benitez

1 from Pavano

1 of our own

Where do the other 2 come into play?

I was sad for a moment there... but then i remembered the 'Boston Massacre' in '03 where the sox rocked the marlins 26-8(i belive?) and i felt much better. =]

BTW, glad to be on these forums :lol
