Delgado signing boosts ticket sales

Marlins moving season packages faster than normal

MIAMI -- Luring a prize free agent catch like Carlos Delgado not only solidified the Marlins as playoff contenders. The windfall is being felt at the team's ticket offices, too.

During business hours Wednesday, one day after the Marlins announced the signing of the power-hitting first baseman, the team said that it sold about $150,000 in various season-ticket packages, which is five times the amount for a normal day. A steady stream of calls poured in for tickets from 8:30 a.m. until shortly after 5 p.m.

The Marlins didn't offer the exact number of season ticket packages that were sold, but the demand for tickets is expected to remain on the rise over the next few weeks.

Delgado, 32, will formally be announced as a Marlin at a Thursday afternoon news conference.

The Marlins signed Delgado to a four-year, $52 million contract that includes an option for a fifth year that makes the package possibly worth $64 million.

The former Blue Jays slugger provides the Marlins with a left-handed cleanup hitter. Last year, Delgado belted 32 home runs and drove in 99 runs.

Wednesday also marked a spike in phone calls for Spring Training tickets for the Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

"It's been strong, even before the Delgado announcement," Roger Dean Stadium general manager Rob Rabenecker said.

Roger Dean Stadium officials don't release the exact season ticket totals. But Rabenecker said tickets were selling at a 13 percent higher rate this season than a year ago when the Marlins were coming off a World Series championship.

"We've got a lot of calls today," Rabenecker said. "The ticket windows have been strong for the Marlins and Cardinals [who share the complex]."

$150,000 total

$2,511 (average season ticket price)

= 59.73715651135005973715651135006

or about 60 average full season tickets.

Not too bad. Since most are Fish Tank....

$150,000 divided by $486 (Fish Tank adult, full season)

= 308.64197530864197530864197530864

or about 309 season tickets.....of course that is if all of the buyers were in the Fish Tank.

I was told by the rep their target this year is 12-14K total season tix holder. Last year they had 10K.

I think 14K is very possible.

When were you told that the team's target? If it was before Mr. Delgado signed with us, then I think we can definitely go over 14K... :thumbup

By the way, dunno if any of you would know this, is it possible to buy a season ticket package after the season starts? I don't think I can commit to a particular package until I find out what my schedule will be like during the summer.

I'm fairly certain 150k is for all season ticket packs, incl 41 flex and sat & sun plans.

I think you save some money if you get a package. And you also get priority for postseason tickets. And I want to be able to get a ticket to watch the Fish in the postseason.

I know, but MLB counts it as 81 games=1 season ticket package.....so I just did it based on the average for 81 games and the Fish Tank average for 81 games.

Glad to see that the public is responding so well to this signing. I hope they stay around all season this time... :whistle

It should be more than possible. Hell, we should have 20,000 season ticket holders.

This was after Delgado signed with us.

$150k, i'd estimate the average price of all season ticket packages combined and all seating locations is about $2500, so that's about 60 new accounts, I assume.

if you remember, last year the marlins were very creative with different packages after the season started. I'm sure there will be various different options for you throughout the season.

Sounds good. I'll definitely purchase a good plan. :thumbup

Well you know I got mine so I help out when possible! I got the full season this year even though you know I will not go to every game but there is this cute waitress at the restaurant close to my office than I can give the tickets to when I can not go or its raining bad or something because she has a really small brother that loves the Marlins. Everybody should love the Marlins after what they did for Miami you know. So go get tickets and if you want to visit I am in section 144 row 10 so I can see Delgado up close and shout to him VAMOS CARLOS SACALE LA MIERDA A LA PELOTA. haha oye we are going to really kick butt this season so buy tickets now. :thumbup :cool :)
