June 1, 200521 yr County manager burgess denied the report that this offer has been made to the county by wayne. 791305 Good point- here's the quote from the Herald: REPORT DENIED Miami-Dade County manager George Burgess denied a WQAM report that Dolphins Stadium has offered the Marlins a friendlier lease to remain there long-term, provided the county pays for a retractable roof. '' Wayne Huizenga has not submitted any proposal on a deal for the Marlins to stay there,'' Burgess said. Huizenga said two months ago he would consider offering the Marlins a better lease, but said last week he has not contacted the Marlins about that. The Marlins have no interest in staying at Dolphins Stadium, even though there has been no progress in bridging a $45 million funding gap for a new ballpark.
June 1, 200521 yr i dont trust wayne. i'd rather not deal with him at all. we are talking 30 million. we shouldnt be pawns in wayne's little scheme over 30 million bones. 791139 Totally agree with Das. After everything that Wayne has done to this team, I want nothing to do with the man and would rather find some other solution. Then again, we are talking about the future of the Marlins here. So lets say that they can't find a way to bridge the $30 million left for the new stadium and the Marlins are told by MLB that they can start looking into possibly moving. If officials come along and strike a deal with Wayne that allows the Marlins to stay at DS with a roof and a better revenue stream, will the Marlins and MLB (if they are both so committed to this area) accept and just use the stadium until an even better deal comes along in the future? I'm thinking long term for this team and I want them to be here.
June 1, 200521 yr Article from the Sentinel that states the deal might be offered, but hasn't been thus far. I still doubt that the Marlins, and more so MLB, go for this. Dolphins Stadium with retractable roof may be pitched to Marlins By Sarah Talalay Staff Writer Posted June 1 2005 Miami-Dade County officials and Dolphins Stadium representatives have discussed outfitting the stadium with a retractable roof and allowing the Florida Marlins to remain there with a more favorable lease, if they are unable to complete a financing deal for a new ballpark, sources said Tuesday. The officials met last week to discuss the proposal that is still being fine-tuned, but would put county hotel bed tax dollars toward construction of a roof and provide the Marlins with more revenue than they earn now, the sources said. The team pays rent at Dolphins Stadium in Miami Gardens and receives only percentages of parking, concessions and signage, and nothing from suites. The Marlins are negotiating with county and city of Miami officials to bridge a gap of up to $45 million in a $420 million plan for a retractable roof ballpark east of the Orange Bowl, since the Legislature did not approve a $60 million state sales tax rebate before recessing last month. Major League Baseball officials have asked for a report on the deal's progress by June 9. It's unclear whether the Marlins have been approached about the Dolphins Stadium proposal or if they would accept it. Team officials declined comment Tuesday, but have previously said remaining at Dolphins Stadium is not a long-term option. The team has said it will consider a move from Florida if a stadium deal isn't reached. Major League Baseball officials have also said remaining at Dolphins Stadium is not a solution, particularly since there are only three dual-purpose stadiums housing both baseball and football, and in each case the baseball team is seeking a new home. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...-sports-marlins
June 1, 200521 yr I really don't understand how you guys would be cool with the Marlins playing at DS with a rectractable roof. DS is a football stadium. It sucks for baseball and it's an embarassment. DS is almost as bad as RFK and the old Vet. A new ballpark is the way to go, in my opinion. I hope some of you'll agree with me on that point. When you watch the game tonight, just think of how beautiful yet pitcher friendly PNC is. Wouldn't it be nice to have a great ballpark like that? :plain

What is the alternative if no new ballpark can be built for the Marlins?

June 1, 200521 yr The Marlins moving would suck, but if wherever they move to has a nice ballpark, depending on where it is, I might support it. 791693 i agree. them moving to a nicer park elsewhere wouldnt bother me since im about to go to college and i doubt ill ever live in miami after im done with school
June 1, 200521 yr it would bother me, i'm gonna live in miami for the rest of my life and it would be nice to be able to take my kids to a MLB game
June 1, 200521 yr DS seats are soooo uncomfortable. There is no leg room at all. We need to get a new stadium immediately something has to be done. This has been going on for years and not a block has been laid yet to start stadium construction. Someone here has to know somebody famous. We need all the help we can. These politicians who don't support the stadium are bastards. I hope one of them croaks and the next one to take his place supports a new stadium. I want a stadium pronto. IN MIAMI! No to DS with dome :thumbdown
June 1, 200521 yr Author The county, city, and team are still chasing the ballpark next to the Orange Bowl. However, the news in this is that Wayne has offered a fairer lease publicly to the media. That is a big about-face.
June 1, 200520 yr absolutley fine nothing wrong with the pro besides the lease if that's cleared up, then i'm ecstatic 790412 I agree!

That is a big about-face. 791756 Sounds like Wayne is trying sweep the Marlins' feet out from under them to me. Attack the Marlins' key grievances and target their financial backers to kill the deal and keep some of the Marlins-related revenue.
June 2, 200520 yr I hate this. As a last resort I can see, but they better milk every possible option to try to get the OB stadium done. It's been said here before, PPS is an old concrete dinosaur. Selig took away the All-Star game in 2000 because he wanted to promote a better image of MLB having the All-Star game in new parks. MLB wants their teams in new stadiums- they're not going to like this. This sucks a lot. Hope it doesn't happen. Let's get the OB site done, huh? They're so damned close, giterdone!
July 13, 200520 yr This appears to be the perfect solution, but I'm with M2003 on all the loose ends. The Marlins need parking revenue and in-stadium advertising revenue. btw, I'm one of those Cutler Ridge fans & I used the ParkNRide from Dadeland last week for the first time. It makes sense and saves $$$ - but there were only 4 people on the bus. C'mon fans - you gotta show interest or the county will stop the service. 791327 How does the ParkNRide work?
July 13, 200520 yr I really dont see how they can do itand keep them in the same space AND add a dome, the logistics would be a nightmare. are they realistically gonna add a dome in the two months its vacant. besides no deal they want there own place to call home not DOLPHINS stadium.
July 13, 200520 yr Is the Retractable Roof really nessesary ? i mean, sure, it would be really nice, but is it a sticking point to where if they can't get the retractable roof, they would leave ? if they just made it an open air stadium, the money would be there.
July 13, 200520 yr yes it is, that is what drives alot of fans from going. Plus they have so many canceled games because of weather it kills us.
July 13, 200520 yr 3 Things I Love About This Proposal: 1) Roof for the Marlins ( :notworthy ) 2) Rent-Free Lease (Frees Up about $10 million a year for payroll) 3) All Concession, Club Seat, and Sky Box Money for Fish (Opens Floodgate$) This would be the best solution if the OB doesn't work out. 790420 I agree completely....Loria would save a bundle and would open the floodgates to hopefully be able to re-sign AJ if they don't trade him (if the deal gets done soon enough) and open the market to others.... Question though how quick can they do the turn-a-round if they agree to it....due to the Dolphins and Marlins playing pretty much non-stop in the stadium....i mean if the Phins don't make the playoffs you have from Jan-Apr. with nothing going on at the stadium can it be turned around that quick??
July 13, 200520 yr Park and Ride You go to a site (i.e. Tamiami Park near the batting cages ....where I used to live) You park your car for free in the parking lot. You pay the fee ($4-7 roundtrip) and get on a MetroBus. They take you right to the stadium. 790448 its in the batting cages sluggers on coral way and 117 ave where you use to park to take the tram to the fair but now a bus picks you up there and your on your way.
