July 30, 200321 yr it wouldnt be the first time ESPN changed opinions ask Peter Gammons i think he strained his quad jumping on the BandWagon lol -You Cant Stop The Train!-
July 30, 200321 yr J.D Drew or bust!!!!!!!!! A conselation prize wouldn't be bad, but I agree. Drew is #1 on the list.
July 30, 200321 yr A conselation prize wouldn't be bad, but I agree. Drew is #1 on the list. I don't get you people... You want to do a trade just for the sake of doing a trade? Why would JD Drew all of the sudden help us when he hasn't helped the Cardinals for the past 5 years? The guy is always in the DL for one reason or another and people in this board are so ready to trade for him... So, Arizona got Mondesi and we answer by going after Drew? WOW, what an improvement! I would be happy if we answer by getting Giles, but another underachiever? No, but no thanks...

The push us, we push harder...
July 30, 200321 yr I totally disagree eadermas. I think you have failed in your appraisal of Drew's talents. Sure, the guy has been injured in the past. Up until this year, Pudge was labeled a health liability. And Drew has yet to play a full season, but I think that has as much to do with the way LA Russa manages him than Drew's inability to make it through a hole season. I suspect Drew isnt totally happy in St L, the winning may keep him going, but if they were losing I am sure frustration would have boiled over. But you know what sells me on Drew? It is not his big time ability, nor that he is only 27. Nor that he is reasonably affordable for that combination. But what he does in the clutch (yeah, I said it) or with RISP. CHeck out these stats: .271 .856OPS 7HR 118ABs - no one on .314 .895OPS 4HR 86ABs - runners on .392 1.101OPS 3HR 51ABs - RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION You dont think that could improve our team and our situational hitting?
July 30, 200321 yr If we are not giving up too much why not take a chance on this guy. The way Cabrera has been playing if Drew does get injured than Cabrera can easily fill in. Drew has tremendous upside and if healthy could be a all-star year in and year out.
July 30, 200321 yr God. If Drew came he would play in like 30 games. IF he doesn't get seriously injured. He won't carry this team,we have what we need right now as far as offence goes. It just makes no sense to rent a position player for 30 games who really won't help that much. It's that simple.
July 30, 200321 yr Did you look at the post I just made? What makes you so sure that Drew wont help out? It is funny, before Cabrera went on a tear, most of you were saying 'we need a lefty power hitter to play OF'. Now, when we are on the verge of acquiring one, we all of a sudden dont need him? Either we didnt need it after all, or we did - and therefore still do. I have always said getting a lefthanded hitter just to get one is silly, you need quality hitters no matter which side of the plate he hits from. Drew not only enhances our team's talent, but offers us a lot of flexibility for the future and IS an impact player which this team could be built around. Cabrera is not going away, he is here for the long haul. But a guy like Encarnacion may not be - and Drew would certainly be an improvement over him. With this deal, we could possibly help out our present situation AND improve our future. I dont see how you could even be hesitant about this deal. :banghead

July 30, 200321 yr Pittsburgh Tribune Review today: "The Pirates are close to trading pitcher Jeff Suppan, and a deal could be done as soon as today. The bidding appears to be down to three teams: the Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox." link
July 30, 200321 yr sorry i never thought we needed a lefty hitter..... and i have never liked DL Drew when healthy he is great... but he is NOT healthy..... Drew is gonna possibly make $5mil in 04(how i dont know but w/e) i say just keep the prospects or whatever

July 30, 200321 yr huh? who says we offer him arbitration? dont be so ignorant ALL THE TIME Like I said, IF LORIA AGREES TO PAYING FOR HIM (translation: if Loria says it's ok to offer arbitration), then he'll be here for three years.
July 30, 200321 yr yea i read that.... how would he be there 3 years? you make no sense He's arbitration eligible for the next 3 years. OK, he could possibly be here for the next 3 years, if Loria agrees to sign him to arby every year.
July 30, 200321 yr But you know what sells me on Drew? .... what he does in the clutch (yeah, I said it) or with RISP. That's a pretty good average with "RISP". But how's his average with RISPBDCHBIA? (runners in scoring position but drew can't help because injured again) sorry, had to do it... :shifty
July 30, 200321 yr Ramp, whether or not you like Drew, you cannot dismiss his ability. Who on our team currently is batting better than .392 with RISP and a 1.101OPS? (Psst...his name is Pudge...but just to get your goat, Cabrera is batting .344 with 1.028 in 32ABs). The next nearest regular is Lowell, at .315. Believe it or not, this is a good deal because what we can do later as well as now. If you are concerned about Cab not getting experience, he more than likely will stay up with the team and be the 4th OF. And if you are concerned with Drew getting injured again, Cabs could fill in for him. We dont lose any active players, only future talent - and not a whole lot at that. Sure, Levinski, if traded, is a fine prospect and could be good someday, but Wayne, Neal - we can afford to lose them too. I just think the price we are paying for Drew's talent is not significant. We take the chance...and please, tell me where your concern is because I dont see any cause for alarm based on what you are saying.
