June 13, 200521 yr remember, don't just think offense, think defense. I think D. Lee is one of the better defensive first basemen in the game. And he has shown this year that he has the ability to carry a team on his back. I am not sure on the whole money situation but i think we could have kept Lee for what we're paying Delgado. I like Lee.
June 13, 200521 yr Has anyone looked at Delgado's numbers lately? .326/13/45...and this is in a ballpark that was going to hurt his numbers. Lee would never, ever, put up the numbers he has this year in Pro Player. He is too damn stubborn to try to pull the ball more, he will always be a power alley hitter, and left-center is a little more forgiving at Wrigley. Even with money considered, I'd rather have Delgado. Yes we lost a lot defensively, but Lee wasn't exactly a great character guy (remember the revolt he tried to lead after Floyd was traded), nor was he a "clutch" hitter. Plus, Delgado's a lefty and he is more marketable (I actually see people walking around CityPlace with Delgado t-shirts on...DLee wouldn't have gotten that kind of love).
June 13, 200521 yr Lee is just having a good year, however, carlos has always had a good year, at least more than Lee.

Delgado has been unbelievable, he is on pace to have Sheffield like numbers from 1996.

I think Wrigley does help Lee out a lot. But remember that Lee is young and hasn't had the time that Delgado has had to establish himself. Also, Delgado was a big offseason pick up. Any big offseason pick up is going to have instant love. He's a big name and the pick up shows that the Marlins front office are committed to winning (unlike the devil rays). But I agree with the numbers but you cannot disregard Lee's numbers and how outstanding they are right now. And no, he isn't just having a "good year". He has consistently been a producer but now he is the heart of the cubs with sosa and alou gone.
June 13, 200521 yr if you are considering lee vs delgado then I would take Delgado. He is only getting better as the season goes on. He will learn the NL pitching and ball parks better. Plus on top of the homeruns those doubles are rather nice all. For this to be considered it should be lee/pudge vs delgado/lo duca Now if you had those two last year we would of made the playoffs and still have penny I bet.
June 13, 200521 yr Delgado, he is a way more proven hitter than Lee and he has been hot with us so far. I miss Lee's defense though, he was gold!
June 13, 200521 yr I would like to start out with- I like Derrek Lee a lot and I always have. But DLee is JUST now coming into his own. It took longer than most baseball people (scouts) expected. However, Carlos is a flat out beast that puts fear into opposing pitchers. I miss Lee especially for his speed and defense (hard to come by for 1st basemen). I think playing at Wrigley helps for Lee also. Carlos is just starting to hit like we know he can. Carlos can hit 35-40 homers this season. I pick Carlos but I wish DLee the best of luck. I just hate the Cubs.
June 13, 200521 yr Although I like the Delgado signing very much, you have to look at what transpired, and what could have happened to answer this question. My preference would have been to keep DLee and then use the $$$ to sign a power hitting RFer.
June 13, 200521 yr Right now, just based on perfomance, I would want Lee. He's having the best season of any first baseman in the game right now.
June 13, 200521 yr I'll take Delgado anyday...I don't regret not having lee around. If we didn't trade Lee for Choi then we wouldn't have been able to trade choi/penny for Lo Duca, Mota and Enc. We got a lot more by letting Lee go then having him stay around...even though Mota sucks hairy nuts right now.
June 13, 200521 yr There both great players but come on don't you think Wrigley Field help D Lee out just a little to much. And that i why i would put Delgado over him
June 13, 200521 yr D Lee + Pudge > Delgado + Lo Duca 807569 Yep. But... D Lee < Delgado 2003 team's talent < 2005 team's talent
June 13, 200521 yr D Lee + Pudge > Delgado + Lo Duca 807569 15,666,667 > 8,660,993 You can always think about it that way :thumbup
June 13, 200521 yr D Lee + Pudge > Delgado + Lo Duca 807569 15,666,667 > 8,660,993 You can always think about it that way :thumbup 807708 I dont understand those numbers
June 13, 200521 yr Derrek Lee does not strike fear into an opposing pitcher when he walks into a batter's box like Carlos Delgado does. Ignoring the clutch factor because I don't feel like arguing with the SABRs, Delgado seems to come through alot more than anyone else right now. Also, I don't ever recall Derrek Lee taking an offense on his back like Delgado has done. On defense, sure Lee has Delgado. However, Carlos has alredy proven that he is a leader. He and Lo Duca called a players only meeting to try to let cooler heads prevail during the losing streak, I don't think DLee would have done that. I don't think DLee would have been the standout face of this organization, or even the standout face of this lineup. No knocking DLee, but Delgado's more worth his money.
June 13, 200521 yr But... D Lee < Delgado 2003 team's talent < 2005 team's talent 807693 True, but obviously Pudge > Lo Duca. Plus Lee can steal bases and is a far better defensive first baseman than Delgado. I would never say I'd prefer Lee over Delgado but certainly would prefer the tandem of Lee & Pudge
June 13, 200521 yr Delgado is better, anyone who votes for D-Lee is a homer still fixated on 2003. Fact of the matter is D-Lee is a .266 career hitter who has never had a 100 RBI season. Delgado is a proven performer and is a bonafide superstar, D-Lee is a solid major leaguer at best who is having a great year in one of the best hitters parks in baseball, nothing more. Delgado owns D-Lee in EVERY aspect except for defense.
June 13, 200521 yr D Lee + Pudge > Delgado + Lo Duca 807569 15,666,667 > 8,660,993 You can always think about it that way :thumbup 807708 I dont understand those numbers 807743 I believe those are the combined 2005 salaries of D-Lee/Pudge and Delgado/Lo Duca.

Anyone ever bother to check the park factor difference between Wrigley and PPS? We know PPS is much tougher on HRs, but I'd like to see someone actually post some numbers than to spout out feelings or proclimations without backup.

June 13, 200521 yr I would rather have Carlos Delgado, Paul Lo Duca, and Guillermo Mota than Derek Lee.
June 13, 200521 yr I'll take Lee with his current contract and youth over Delgado. I don't know who's a better player. I think Delgado is a more reliable offensive threat, but if you factor in the speed and defense of Lee, it's a tossup, IMO. Then again, Lee was always my favorite Marlin when he was here, so I'm what you could call a Lee homer.
