Posted June 23, 200519 yr With 18 games before the All-Star break, the Marlins are playing at such a miserable pace that management could be forced to trade away pieces of a lineup that was built to play in the post-season. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...rlins_0623.html I for one am certainly not ready to throw in the towel, but I think the recent struggles are a lot more serious than some people want to believe. The "we're only six games out" quote almost seems like a cliche by now, but the number of games keeps going up, and up, and up. At what point does management say enough is enough and turn their attention to shopping the Pierre's, Lowell's, Encarnacions, Burnett's, etc. for prospects instead of immediate help? Hopefully the guys turn this around soon. What a shame it would be to see this season go down the drain.
June 23, 200519 yr If we turn into sellers, no way in hell am I renewing my season tickets. There is no effort on this team, from our players all the way up to the front office.

Whether we're "buyers" or "sellers," I know we're better off without Lowell/Enc and Pierre is testing my patience. I'd take Willingham's bat over all 3 of those guys right now. When Gonzo is our 4th or 5th best hitter, you know we're screwed. I say we offer AJ the contract we offered Pavano. Give it our all to resign him. If he says he wants to test FA regardless of what we offer, trade his ass for the highest offer. He's never lived up to his potential to this day, IMO. We need more than a simple draft pick for someone with that talent.
June 23, 200519 yr If this team/management gives up, then I will be a very pissed off Marlin fan. What a waste of talent. Win the last game against the Braves and sweep the sorry D-Rays- simple as that.

Win the last game against the Braves and sweep the sorry D-Rays- simple as that. 822178 lets be realistic. Win tonight, and get 2 out of 3 from the d rays. We're going to lose the travis smith start most likely. In fact whose pitchign against the rays? Leiter, smith, burnett? The possibility of getting swept is there. We need to salvage this road trip and returning home in a decent enough spot, lets not assume sweep of d rays, b/c right now we're no better than they are. At least they can score runs
June 23, 200519 yr Honestly, if we don't act and fire Bill Robinson, the best thing might be to start trading players for prospects. At this pace, this team will not accomplish anything.
June 23, 200519 yr With 18 games before the All-Star break, the Marlins are playing at such a miserable pace that management could be forced to trade away pieces of a lineup that was built to play in the post-season. Jesus Christ. I could have said that. :plain
June 23, 200519 yr Firing bill robinson wont turn this team around. Although i agree someone should take the fall for our impotent lineup, we need somehting that will yield results. Our team is a veteran team, with the exception of cabrera everyone has played at least 6 years in the bigs. They need to get up and hit, no coach will fix this problem.
June 23, 200519 yr If we turn into sellers, no way in hell am I renewing my season tickets. There is no effort on this team, from our players all the way up to the front office. 822156 Yeah...that's it...the front effort isn't putting forth any effort. What a ridiculous comment...get a clue...I'm sure the front office is far more perplexed and frustrated as all of the amateur GM's on this board. The last thing we want is for them to make a rash decision and discard some of our top prospects in desperation. I would imagine changes are in the works. Beinfest has proven to be extremely creative and rational...have a bit of faith. :whistle

Sorry, but I put the onus on Jack McKeon.
June 23, 200519 yr The FO of our divison rivals have been making moves and we haven't. Even the Braves in signing Brower shows they have done more. He might not be that good, but he is an inning-eater off the pen that you can use instead of AAAA guys like Travis Smith.
June 23, 200519 yr I dont see how the blame of 24 scorless innings can be blamed on jack, if were not scoring runs who cares how you manage your bullpen. MAybe the team needs a shake up just like the Astros last season, but i dont see who you would replace Jack with. I think a replacement of Bill Robinson would be a great idea, but who replaces him?

Sorry, but I put the onus on Jack McKeon. 822207 I put the onus squarely on the players...especially Lowell and JP. They are two of the supposed leaders on the team. Their performance to date has been abysmal. The difficult question the front office faces is whether or not to give up on them. I'm sure the Phillies are glad they had faith in Pat Burrell when he was struggling a couple of years ago. I'm not sure what the answer is...however a trade of Enc and Mota might be a good start.
June 23, 200519 yr When you "want" something and when you "need" something it's two completely different things. When have an all-star third baseman who's hitting .300 to trade or you have an all-star third baseman who's hitting .225, it may be the same piece of meat, but it's a completely different thing. Going from being by "buyers" to "sellers" is a matter of how what you have to trade is perceived value-wise. Right now a Mike Lowell (and I'm not advocating trading Lowell but rather using him as an example, although I wouldn't object to him being traded) has little trade value and thus trading him (and his $25 million contract) would be looked upon as a fire sale. The same goes for JP and a few others on the team. The FO is hamstrung right now because their most valuable commodities have decreased markedly in value and the vultures (other GMs) are circling overhead looking to minimize what they have to give to get the pieces "they" need to make "their" teams better. If JP were hitting .310 right now you could get almost any player you wanted in exchange. At .240, you have to take what's offered or suffer with him until he turns it around. I wouldn't want to be the Marlins GM right now. It's a no-win no matter what you do but it will be interesting to see how Beinfest acts in the next few weeks. Very interesting indeed.

Some people here thinks that Beinfest can pick up the phone and make a trade in a blink of an eye and get a valuable piece. Average players are going to demand a lot in return. Right now we don't have any pieces on the team roster that will get anything above average in return (unless we can live without Castillo, LoDuca, Miguel, Dontrelle, AJ, Delgado?). Or are we willing to make a trade and give up minor leaguers like Hermida and company? I believe that this team is going to ride this roaster and do some minor trades (probably meaningless), if we are behind big time by the AS break, wave AJ good bye and who knows who (Todd Jones and Moe comes to mind as well).
June 23, 200519 yr If we turn into sellers, no way in hell am I renewing my season tickets. There is no effort on this team, from our players all the way up to the front office. 822156 amen. i think a lot of people out there feel the same way you do. there was such a buzz during the offseason surrounding the marlins. last year they barely missed the WC just a year after winning the WS. they sign what seems to be the missing link in their lineup which automaticly makes us a contender. then all of the sudden they just suck big time. quote i heard on the radio today: "The Marlins are the most underachieving baseball team in the National League." I have tickets for the cubs series and unless we turn things around by then i dont see myself buying tickets for any other games. I can only take one perenial underachiever from south florida a year (cough-dolphins-cough).
June 23, 200519 yr I can't see us trading Pierre or Lowell. They may be struggling, but one has to believe they will turn it around at some point....if not this year, then next. We should look for one or two OFers. Move Cabs to 3rd and sit Pierre and Lowell. Make room for them on the bench by sending down Dillon and retiring Lenny. It's too bad we can't send Pierre down to have him work on his hitting. He would never clear waivers. Willy could be brought up to be one of the OFers. Play him in at a corner OF spot depending on who else we can get. We need to get Willy's bat into the lineup.
June 23, 200519 yr Look at next year. Hermida will be given every opportunity to take over right field. We will be without AJ, Leiter and probably Valdez and Moehler too. We might even have to work a rookie at shortstop. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they started the limited 'youth movement' a half-year earlier.

Nothing, they've done absolutely nothing. If we wait to make a move until the day of the trade deadline, it will already be far too late. Every week we're losing tons of ground and it is irresponsible for the FO to site back and do nothing.
June 23, 200519 yr What would you have them do? Give Graves two years? Trade Hermida and Willingham for Matt Herges or Ugeth Urbina?

Well other than the bullpen, what they've done is say that they think the current team should be good enough to turn it around. Didn't you think this team would be good enough before the season? I sure did. Well the FO just appears willing to give them the opportunity to get it together, that's all. At least for the moment...
