After the Marlins defeated the Atlanta Braves last night in a heroic extra inning affair, the chants and praises could be heard from all over the place, with threads like "Defining Moment" and comments like "OMG Dukey" or "This is the turning point of our season."

Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but this is not the turning point of our season. Last night we left 17 men on base. As many of you can recall, we even had a man on third with 0 outs and failed to drive him in. That is a staggering statistic that clearly defines this team's inability to drive in runs.

Sure, we won, but its one of those victories that can only happen against mediocre or injury plagued teams. We got lucky that the Braves bullpen went down to their last man, and we got even luckier with several breaks and bad calls, including one in the "Strike 'Em Out Throw Em out DP", in which the runner was clearly safe.

You can bash me all you want, calling me a negative slut or whatever other names you wish. But those of you who truly know the game are aware that some serious changes have to be done. So please, save yourself some grief, and hold your victory chants until later when it's safe to say that we are a dominant team.

We may have won the battle but we haven't won the war.

"More negativity....why can't you just can't have a good thing to say after such a great win!"

(Guarantee someone will make that comment).

But you are right, it is just another game in a long season, and there really is no one turning point, but an eventual rise of the offensive stats. As a said in a similar thread, if we can be 6 games over at the allstar break, we'll be in good position to make a push in the 2nd half.

on the other side, i believe last night was clearly a momentum shifter for the team..

if they would have lost last night, the season would have been over, it would have knocked them so far under they wouldn't be able to get back up. it would have turned us from buyers to sellers, and so on. last night was very important, you can pick out the bad stats, but hey, as long as at the end of the night, there's a W in our Column, i'm okay with that, whether its a rained shortened 4 1/2 inning game or an 18 inning war.

Bottom line is we won. And after Cabrera scored you can see how excited all the players war. It looked like they were celebrating a WS win. The point is this win might spark something in the games to come.

I agree, i mean it was incredible to see how excited the guys were with that win...haven't seen that much excitement from this team in a long long time, now hopefully they can parlay that success into some W's

as for the staggering stat...i agree 17 LOB is way to many to win the game....but in the long run a W is all that matters

This win was like a heroine. Once the effect wears off, they go back to misery. Don't worry, I'll pick you up from the pub if we lose tonight.

You have to be kidding

Yeah.. I also was listening to Goldberg this morning. Are you the relay man to the forum?

The Braves are injury plagued, yes. But their bullpen was down to their last man because they went through every single one of their pitchers, not because they have any pen injuries. Their injuries are in the field, and clearly that doesn't mean anything when 2 of the 5 runs were brought in because of a player filling in for someone that is hurt. This games ends alot sooner, in the Marlins favor if Wilson Betemit (someone else filling in for an injured Brave) doesn't get a glove on the roller to short and lets it scoot into LF.

The Marlins won this game because the offense kept slamming at the door with a hammer, until it finally came down in the 13th, and more importantly the bullpen came in and held the Braves in check while the offense took its sweet time getting runs. When do ninth inning come backs happen for us this year? Are we forgetting we came back, on their fully healthy closer, to drop two runs in the ninth to send it to extras?

The bullpen didn't pitch well yesterday - they absolutely dominated. In 8.2 IP, they surrendered just 4 hits (three of them in Riedling's 1.1 IP of work) to go along with 5 walks and 8 strikeouts. If you remove Riedling from that equation (he's our worst reliever anyways, big ups on coming through though) the pen went 7.1 IP 1 H 0 R 4 BB 6 K. That won the game. And if that's not a reason to be happy, well, go root for the Nationals.

Our biggest weakness came to play today. I'll take it.

Yeah Bump and House of Pain both need some love after they both came to ball last night. Bump put out Al's fire, and Mota ate up two innings.

Baseball is all about momentum and believing in yourself, just look at the Nats. If we can break off a winning streak after this high, then we could very well look back at this as a turning point.

You are talking like everyone here is declaring the division won. You are no Guru

I rather see Dunlop as our manager. To me it seems like hes more aware of whats going on in tight situations. Usually when a big situation happens Jack seems to always be sitting his ass down no matter what, and when players see this it sends them a sign that it ain't going to matter what they do. Dunlop was mostly always on his feet clapping and cheering the team on.

Thank you Guru. I know that the majority of people on this site are young kids, but sometimes the fair-weatheredness is just absurd. Everyone will be back to complaining and calling "to fire Bill Robinson" when the Marlins revert to scoring 1 or 2 runs per game beginning again tomorrow.

Jack is up on the top step in big situations.

Jack is always laid back eating his sunflower seeds. Dunlop was up the whole time clapping and talking to players. He wanted them to make sure they know the challenge and what there up to. Jack usually is sitting down with his arm around Wiley having a conversation even when the team is getting killed 9-0.

I agree with you.I envisioned a 46-40 record at the allstar break back about 4 weeks ago.To win the wild card (at least), I figured that we would need to be 90-72 at season's end (not 94-68 as some have suggested). That means we would have to go 44-32...which seems obtainable.Anything less than 46-40 at the break, would indicate that we continued to struggle at home as we headed into this break...which would be a good indicator of a team that will continue to struggle for the remainder of the season.

Negativity will get you nowhere!!!! All this team needs is confidence...I'm sure you've played sports before and you know how much of the "Game" is mental. Out of all sports, Baseball tests your mental toughness the most. You can hit a screaming line drive 10 times in a row and still make ten straight outs after doing everything mechanically correct. How do you overcome these facts? Confidence. How do you gain confidence? By winning. So I think winning games late and coming from behind cannot be underestimated because you start to believe that you can do it, no matter what the score is.

We have the talent but our Morale is at an all-time low. Look at the expressions on our players faces during the last 20 games. It makes me want to scream into the dugout to wake up and hit the damn ball and have fun already!!! They've really made it harder on themselves by being so damn morose and depressed all the time.

After tonights's game, we finally see smiles and energy and that can carry forward to the next game. If the next game is also won then the energy continues, so why try and drag the team down with negativity when what they need now is optimism and support. I guess some always look at the negative side of things...Yes it is more likely that tonight was an aberration than the rest of the season but maybe the whole season up to now has been a long extended aberration...who knows???? Stranger things have happened...Go Marlins!!!!
