No Sweep.

The only team we have swept this season in a 3 or 4 game series this year is the Tampa Bay Devil Rays--twice.

Incredible.

IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD

STFU man. I'm just pointing out a fact.

If you don't think it's frustrating that we can't sweep anybody then I don't know what's wrong with you.

I know winning the series is good, but we are at a time where we need to go for the kill. This team is talented enough to sweep teams when they are weak.

The Braves just got done sweeping the Pirates and the Nationals. We won 4 out of 6 against them. That's why the Braves are better than us, they finish off the weak teams.

Not to mention our next 4 games will be against the reigning NL champion in their house. We had a chance to finish off a slumping team in the Nationals today and we couldnt do it.

We have 60 games left, and winning 2/3 of them, will leave us at 93 wins, if I am correct. THAT might not even be enough. I hope it is though...

Am I the only one who is blaming this on Moehler?

I mean, it isn't a coincidence that the two games we've lost in our last 6 were games he pitched (and poorly at that).

I guess... but this is who Brian Moehler is. He isnt the pitcher he was a few months ago. That guy was a flash in the pan.

in all the years the Braves have won the division the difference between them and the runner up was that the Braves could sweep teams they should beat and the runner up could only win the series.

not that I support the freaking out that we've only had 2 sweeps all year, but it certainly helps the cause.

Right, which is why I'd like to see Vargas (ideally Olsen) get back into the rotation with Moehler becoming the longman.

I am not freaking out. I'm just saying, that it's pretty incredible that a team with this much talent is only able to sweep the Devil rays.

And yes, that is why the Braves always win the NL East.

Whatever. I guess I'm the only one that is embarassed that the Braves have won the NL East title like 14 times in a row...

Hah. I'm gonna bump this because we missed yet ANOTHER opportunity for a sweep and we missed a chance to take the lead in the wild card.

I'm happy with winning the series. We actually won ground during this series. Is that a missed opportunity?

Well, we didn't gain ground on Atlanta. Our sights should still be on the division, although admittedly time is running out. We still need to put together a nice run, and it is only going to get more difficult given the competition ahead.

Yes we've gained ground, but it's disappointing overall. Underachieving teams (like the Marlins) take 2 out of 3 AT BEST. If we played as good as we're capable of playing, we should have more than 2 sweeps all year. :banghead

Just look at the number of sweeps the 1997 and 2003 team had and the number of sweeps the first place teams this year have and you'll see the difference.

And to break it down a little further: No sweeps means no long winning streaks. :confused

What someone said earlier today is very true - a sweep is worth three series' victories, and at this stage of the game that fact becomes amplified. If we sweep the Mets, we make them lose a game on the Phillies instead of holding their overall ground, we overtake the Wild Card lead, and we net three games instead of netting just one. Climbing three games higher over .500 instead of just one is absolutely huge at this stage. Sweeping series could be the critical characteristic that puts one team in the playoffs over another.

Just look at it this way, for the next series our mathematical possibilities:

0-4- Net loss of 4 games

1-3- Net loss of 2 games

2-2- Come out the same

3-1- Net gain of 2 games

4-0- Net game of 4 games

A swing of one game in the series, one little tiny bounce, one missed pitch, one ball that just kept sailing - that will change the net gain/loss of the series by two games guaranteed. The same is true in a three game series:

0-3- Net loss of 3 games

1-2- Net loss of 1 game

2-1- Net gain of 1 game

3-0- Net gain of 3 games

In a tight playoff race, that swing of 2 games in the winning percentage column could mean life and death as far as October is concerned. I'll take winning 2 out of 3 over anything lower, of course, but at this point winning every series is not a luxury but a bare necessity. Sweeping teams out of the water would be a Godsend as far as our standing in the race goes.

Oh, and starting The Messiah would help as well.

I want sweeps as much as the next person, but I take 2 out 3 out of a team that has owned us all year. That's all

man if you had told me on Opening Day that we were sweeping the Braves the last three games of the season...well, I'd think we'd be playing again on Tuesday :confused

Yeah, sucks, doesn't it?
