Posted September 16, 200519 yr I hadn't looked for awhile, but with the blow up of the bullpen the last week or so I wanted to check to see how our bullpen compared to the competition. It isn't pretty. As a reliever We have some talent there, so you have to wonder why Jack continues to push his luck and stretch the guys out. More often than not we get into bad trouble when Jack keeps the guys in for more than 1 inning.
September 16, 200519 yr well, more like 5th worst.. but who is counting??! http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggreg...128&season=2005
September 16, 200519 yr Author It depends on whether you sort it by Runs Allowed (4th worst) or ERA (5th worst). Either way it isn't pretty.
September 16, 200519 yr Author They didn't do too bad tonight 947820 Mecir and Mota looked good. Valdez hitting the batter to load the bases with one out and then promptly giving up a single was more atypical of what we've seen lately if the reliever's name doesn't end with Jwns.
September 16, 200519 yr Valdez was bad the first inning too. Yeah, we have a very good foursome in Alfonseca, Jones, Mecir and Mota. It's been the Crowells, Bazardos and Reidlings that have hurt us most of all. p.s. we may be 4th worst in runs scored against (sum), but just 5th worst in ERA. What does that say about our defense and starting pitching's endurance?

September 16, 200519 yr Imagine where they would be w/o Jones :o 947903 Imagine what they be if mota pitched good
September 16, 200519 yr I miss Nate Bump. Most here bashed him, but he did his job well most of the time and induced a ton of ground balls. Can't wait for him to be back next year.

What does that say about our defense and starting pitching's endurance? 948028 I thought you were a fan of Riedling? 948348 Never. Actually I didn't like the signing in the offseason. I thought it put too many guaranteed major league contracts in part of the team where you want flexibility to overturn the roster. His signing meant we were likely to have a 12-man pitching staff for most of the season too, which we did until July, which does not allow for much bench versatility (moot point with Jack's bench management this year). I wanted Perisho or him off the team since the start of the year. Obviously their pitching since hasn't softened my feelings for those two. Don't confuse support for him to work through grief over his father's death, poor support from a star-studded-but-often-lame offense or in general seeing some value in him for some role with liking the guy. The best move the front office made all year was the first demotion of Riedling, who was said to be a favorite of Loria's. It signalled to all our struggling veterans that they must perform at expected levels to earn playing time. And it showed that Loria wasn't afraid to eat salary to make a point. Unfortunetly that didn't stretch to the offense and Lowell until August.
September 17, 200519 yr 4th worst in the NL and it looks so when they go out and pitch. I thought our bullpen was going to be stronger but injuries and players being inconsistant has caused many important losses.
September 17, 200519 yr This is really a pathetic group of guys in the pen. they cant hold a game where it is at all. bring jones in for four innings from now on. were not gonna win s*** if they continue their horrible ways. Pa-The-Tic.
September 17, 200519 yr We all want the post-season, there is no doubt about that. But....this is NOT a post-season winning bullpen. Frustrating.......those bases on balls..........
September 17, 200519 yr Resop and Quantrill shouldn't even be here.. all they do is clog it up and confuse Jack even more.
September 17, 200519 yr Did we really hvae to use 4 guys to get 3 outs in the 6th? This is another side effect of the huge pen. Jack (or any manager) is going out of his way to play matchups (which may not be a good thing), pulling pitchers quickly (hurting each pitcher's confidence) and just getting our pitchers work (even if they may not be ready or necessary). edit: this post brought to you from Woodchunk Cider Draft which tastes much better at the bar.
September 17, 200519 yr Author Quantrill makes a few good pitches and then promptly followed them up with fat balls over the middle of the plate. :banghead He reminds me a lot of Billy Koch last year. We got lucky with Chad Fox in 2003 and now think we can turn other team's rejects into quality relievers.
September 17, 200519 yr Author God I hope Dontrelle throws a complete game tomorrow. I could stand to see anyone other than Jones come out of the bullpen.

In fact, I don't think he does it much. He's just tired of seeing guys walk the first batter they face and stuff like that, which is why he pulls them. And I'm not for keeping them in there when they aren't showing anything, just for confidence purposes.
September 17, 200519 yr Here's a good stat for you: If you take Todd Jones out of the equation, the Marlins bullpen has allowed 32 runs in their past 26 innings. :plain
