Todd Jones

I HATE coming on these boards after a loss like this...and I HATE to make these nice little posts afterwards...BUT I haven't seen anyone bother with this...and I feel we must...

Despite what you saw tonight...DO NOT blame Todd Jones...

I'd say blame Alfonseca but thats not the point...just DON'T blame Jones...He's done way too much for us this year, more than we could have ever imagined! Thanks Todd...we're so happy to have you on board :notworthy

you can blame Jones for tonight

not fully, but he didnt exactly help

No way the blame is going to Jones. Because of him, we are even this far up in the standings.

Winning is a team effort, as is losing. A lot of players didn't contribute a damn thing to this game. That's pretty much the story of the year. Riding on others (Dtrain, Delgado, Cabrera, Jones) back. When either of those 4 mess up we seem to put the blame on them, but what are the others doing? Jack sh*t.

I don't blame Todd Jones. He shouldn't even have been out there in the 8th.

Boy, I was waiting on that one!

anybody else love it when even Rich freakin' Waltz FINALLY jumped up and said...DO NOT blame this on Todd Jones! THE MARLINS BULLPEN SUCKS!!! Middle Relief is horrible and we keep asking and asking for it...something like that. And Tommy Hutton said the Marlins "Screwed up" the 8th....

I wonder how Tommy is texting this one...

Followed by 12 more F's, followed by many other things..

Todd Jwns has been one of the bright spots all season. I really hope we re-sign him for next year.

Everyone is missing a major factor in the loss , ALEX GONZALEZ , stated simply he is an idiot and I dont care what anyone says I do not want to see him back here on this team. Get rid of him and the bullpen :)

I love Jones, don't get me wrong, but the one area of depth this winter on the market is relief pitching. Jones is a good pitcher with great numbers, there'll be several great relief pitchers available this offseason: BJ Ryan, Billy Wagner, Trevor Hoffman. I love Jones, and he's a great guy, so that makes this decision even tougher, but if we're going to weaken ourselves by letting Encarnacion, Gonzalez (likely) and AJ walk, we might as well strengthen the bullpen. Bring me BJ Ryan.

That's fine. Let's keep Jones as a setup guy. He won't break the bank and we know he can close when needed.

Seems odd that you can't blame Jones for last night, but you can credit him for being great and our savior every night he pitches the final inning of a 2 or 3-run lead.

what seems odd is you can never say anything positive about Jones. The stats are against you on this argument

Jones said that he will test FA. And he knows club will be looking for closer during the off season

My interpretation of what Rferry has said all year long is that Jones has been put into situations whereby small mistakes can be made without consequences (ie, give up a run,hit or BB but no damage) while the majority of our other relievers have not been put into the same situation. The statistics for the other relievers (with pressure like Jones had last night) is not good thus supporting what rFerry has said.

Not that I agree with ferry but Jones has been good in the role he has been used in. Put him in another role and the data may not be as favorable...vice versa for some of the other guys as well.

Exactly.

Except that I don't think Jones would be a terrible middle reliever at all, he'd be rather good... just not good enough to earn the media attention he has this year for racking up saves on a playoff contender.

And thus the reason I can't get too excited over what Jones has done. I consider much of the major league pitching ranks to be able to handle the 9th inning closer role with competency. Even Mota, who is lambasted for his expectation he'd return to the job after injury, went 2 for 2 in the only shot he got all season. But maybe I'm alone in that.

who should have been out there then? someone who would have given up even more runs? it was a desperate move for a desperate team.

If Alfonseca had a better inning we wouldn't even be debating this. Honestly it didn't look like McKeon gave Jones sufficient time to warm up. I've noticed he does that a lot with the bullpen. It looked all the time Jones had was LoDuca's visit to the mound to talk to Alfonseca. If you had watched Jones prepare all season you would notice he started warming up in the 8th inning and by the time he came in he usually was sitting down ready to go.

That was probably the case with Jones, but Jack tends to warm his other pitchers up twice before bringing them in.

Lets see. Normally a phone call or tip of the hat to say you are ready from the pen. If not, the typical stall like LoDucas visit. Stretching for another excuse. So the reasoning for the second hit, walk, third hit is what. How about he just got beat last night throwing an 0-2 pitch down the middle of the plate.

I'm in the same school of thought. Just about any above average pitcher should be able to get 3 outs before surrendering 3 or more runs, so what if it's the ninth. Exceptional closers are the ones who can come in to any situation in the 8th, and send the other team packing.

I've said it before: Jones is a great guy, but he's a good pitcher with amazing numbers, and there's a big difference between that and an amazing closer with decent numbers.
