September 27, 200521 yr Excerpts from Joe Capozzi's article: Change likely, but how much? By Joe Capozzi Palm Beach Post Staff Writer It could be the last week in Marlins teal for manager Jack McKeon, slugger Carlos Delgado and others. McKeon, on pace to become the only manager to guide the Marlins to three consecutive winning seasons, said he has made up his mind about whether he wants to return to the dugout, but he would not reveal his plans. "Yeah, I kind of have an idea of what I want to do," he said before Sunday's game. "But nothing is finalized. We've got seven games to go. We'll worry about it seven games from now." The feeling throughout the clubhouse is that McKeon, who will turn 75 on Nov. 23, will take a job in the front office. That would come as good news to many players, who said privately that they do not want him back because they feel his abrupt style contributed to the team's struggles. "It would be a complete travesty to this team if he returns," one player said. But not all players share that sentiment. "If he chooses to come back, I have no problem with that at all," said pitcher Josh Beckett. "You can't blame the manager. It was us. There were a lot of game we should have won this year." Noteworthy: McKeon's status will, of course, affect the future of his coaching staff. Pitching coach Mark Wiley and infield coach Perry Hill are considered the only safe bets to return. I'm wondering why it is assumed Wiley will get a free pass. We have the 2nd worst bullpen in the NL. The absolute worst in the NL in September. He certainly hasn't got the most out of what he has. I'm all for bringing Rosy back. IMO Perry Hill is the only coach with a free pass. Link
September 27, 200521 yr Let me throw this out. Why is Beinfest safe? Two years now that a team of his has underachieved. Two year now that the offense sucks, two years now that the bullpen is garbage. At some point he needs to be held accountable.

Two year now that the offense sucks, two years now that the bullpen is garbage. At some point he needs to be held accountable. Hey, he put them in a position to win. They were a popular pick this past offseason to win the division. It's not his fault Lowell and Pierre sucked. And the injuries to Mota and Alfie early on are what really hurt the 'pen. As for Wiley, I don't fault him for these guys from AA coming up and getting shelled. Even the vets from AAA. Some people think that like Willis and Cabs, you can call anyone up and they'll blow the place out. That's the exception, not the rule. These kids are going to struggle, especially if they haven't seen any action outside of AA.
September 27, 200521 yr I think this year they had a better bullpen with the exception of Benitez last year and I am biased towards Rosenthal over Wiley. I always thought he got he shaft. It always looks like Wiley is disgusted at the pitchers or something. I hate AJ's 'tude but I think the managers/coaches always looked disgusted. Mckeon probably rubbed off on Wiley. Get some young blood in there and get these guys fired up (Lopes/Guillen/Girardi). I still think Beinfest makes good moves but the team just doesn't gel like they assume they would. That's why 2003 was so special.

I agree. But it doesn't mean he should not be blamed. Especially for the lack of bullpen depth at AAA. We had to resort to bringing up guys that clearly weren't ready to get guys out.

Two year now that the offense sucks, two years now that the bullpen is garbage. At some point he needs to be held accountable. It's not Beinfest's fault the team performed the way it did. EVERYONE and their mothers were picking the Marlins to make it back to the WS and everyone was saying this is going to be the year that the Braves are finally knocked out of first place. Beinfest isn't at fault here, he put together a spectacular team. It's not his fault Lowell was in a slump until the last week of the season, it's not his faul JP has played like sh*t all year long, nobody expected these things.
September 27, 200521 yr Why is Beinfest safe? Been saying that for a while now. If McKeon's at fault for all the failure, why isn't Beinfest at fault for giving the crappy pieces to McKeon. Not to mention, if we hadn't won the series in '03, Beinfest wouldn't be regarded as a genius, but rather a moron for giving up the king's ransom he did for Urbina and Conine.

At the time they were traded, those prospects were pretty damn special. The guys we gave up for Conine were deemed untouchable at the deadline. And if we're playing the "what did they turn into game" Beinfest made a calculated decision that Jason Stokes had a brighter future than Adrian Gonzaelz. Um, yeah.

OK, that's fine, but time didn't play a factor when before the deadline it appeared that the Marlins were willing to do a Derrek Lee for Conine swap, or that they did overpay for Urbina, in June, to be a set-up reliever.
September 27, 200521 yr Beinfest doesn't have a free pass. He's constructed some flawed teams. Botched a few relationships with players, agents, coaches and scouts. Oversaw the recently disappointing drafts. Although I think much of the opinion of Beinfest's success has focused on his waiver-wire and rookie pickups, and he just didn't have quite the same luck this year as in the past.

I never heard the Lee for Conine trade rumors. Maybe I missed that Urbina was a key component to the team, since Looper wasn't to be trusted for too long on the closer role. Beinfest has done a fine job
September 27, 200521 yr It is amazing how differently the Marlins and our opinion of Beinfest would be if some of the deals he proposed weren't turned down. Specifically the two ones with Baltimore, Conine for Lee and Burnett for role players.
September 27, 200521 yr There are plenty more unpublished that could have been shocking but never came to fruition....($) the reason
September 27, 200521 yr Turning away from the beinfest discussion, i think its great to see beckett standing up for the manager and taking part of the blame for the team's struggles. Beckett seems to be showing maturity which is great considering hes going to be a veteran leader on next years staff
September 27, 200521 yr We should have stuck with Rosenthal to begin with, he did a good job for us. I haven't seen anything out of Wiley that was better than Rosenthal.

Beckett seems to be showing maturity which is great considering hes going to be a veteran leader on next years staff I agree. That's why I said in another thread that I think Josh will have a breakout season next year if he can stay healthy. 20 game winner. Mark my words. We should have stuck with Rosenthal to begin with, he did a good job for us. I haven't seen anything out of Wiley that was better than Rosenthal. I don't think AJ and Beckett were in good terms with Rosenthal. What about Dontrelle? no props to Wiley on that? He did well with Dontrelle. I'd like to see him back.
September 27, 200521 yr I just hate hearing Delgado's name mentioned in all this. If he goes, then the most dreaded phase might be coming to light soon: FIRE SALE! :o
September 27, 200521 yr and everyone was saying this is going to be the year that the Braves are finally knocked out of first place. People said the same thing about the 2003, 2004 Phillies. And eventually Ed Wade DID get blamed. I think eventually Beinfest will get blamed by some in the media too.
September 27, 200521 yr I just cant see how Beinfest can be blamed for this. Cant anyone see he doesnt have the money a Cashman type GM has? :confused He has made some amazing moves for us in his time here and with little to work with I might add. I think its getting out of proportion to think so bad of him after 1 season we under achieved. I mean, what other seasons were we really in it to compete besides this one? I know 2004 we sure werent and we still stretched things out pretty good in the end. New manager, new bullpen, some new pitchers and a new bat or 2. Thats whats gonna turn this team around. When Beinfest starts making moves for us in a time where he his given a bunch of money and in a more years we are supposed to deliver like this year, then he can be seen as a possible candidate for gettin the boot. IMO: Beinfest rules! :notworthy
September 27, 200521 yr A new Bullpen coach, a new hitting coach, a new guy that can throw 100 MPH Fastballs w/ a nasty breaking knuckle-curve to replace AJ, Lou Pinella, aaaaand... A few cigars for Jack for when he leaves.
September 27, 200521 yr Let me throw this out. Why is Beinfest safe? Two years now that a team of his has underachieved. Two year now that the offense sucks, two years now that the bullpen is garbage. At some point he needs to be held accountable. Beinfest isn't the problem. He's won in most of his transactions. That's a NY mentality. The team underachieves so get rid of the GM that brought good talent in. We wouldn't have Delgado, Willis, LoDuca, T. Jones, Pierre, Enc, etc. if Beinfest wasn't here.
September 27, 200521 yr I just hate hearing Delgado's name mentioned in all this. If he goes, then the most dreaded phase might be coming to light soon: FIRE SALE! :o If we can get a great deal for Delgado, go for it, and we got a steal on his contract and production this year.
