November 1, 200520 yr Locking up Lee? November 1 Daily Herald (scroll down) (registration required): "First baseman Derrek Lee, who had a monster year in 2005, enters his free-agent season next year. General manager Jim Hendry said Monday he expects to conduct talks with Lee this winter about an extension... If the Florida Marlins make center fielder Juan Pierre available, look for the Cubs to get involved." Cubs may add Pierre November 1 Chicago Tribune (scroll down) (registration required): "With free-agent right fielder Brian Giles appeared headed for St. Louis, the Cubs are likely to sign or trade for one or possibly two outfielders, depending on the Patterson decision. Florida center fielder Juan Pierre reportedly is on the market, and despite a down year with a .276 average and .326 on-base percentage, his 57 steals and experience as a leadoff man would aid the Cubs." Anyone know more from up near Chi-town? Any thoughts here folks? Personally I much rather not trade JP pesonally unless we canget something solid. Your thoughts?
November 1, 200520 yr I've been following his "rumor" for a couple of days and it's genesis seems to be a blogger/lover of the Cubs who says the Marlins "have offered" JP for Corey Patterson and Rich Hill, but the Cubs don't want to give up RP Hill. Personally it makes no sense whatsoever as Patterson is so messed up offensively he's out in the desert somewhere right now trying to find his swing. If the Marlins gave up JP for Patterson they'd be giving up probably 100+ hits a year, 50+ stolen bases and not have a defender any better than they have now. And Patterson is, I assume, arb eligible going into his sixth year (maybe fifth more or less full time), already makes almost $3 mil a year, so what's the benefit there? Oh, did I mention he's a strikeout machine? Struckout 160+ times in 2004, in 600+ at bats. I think it's pure fantasy and more than anything, wishful thinking on the part of Cubs fanatics. They've (the fans) wanted JP for at least a year now. And Hill, BTW, looked awful when brought up three times this season, posting 9.13 ERA. It's just a rumor that goes round and round and round...
November 1, 200520 yr Why would we ever consider this? Patterson has been a disaster and we've got plenty of pitching prospects.
November 1, 200520 yr With the salary hike Dunn is getting and Cincy's probable un-willingness to take on much of that salary might put a snag in that kind of deal.
November 1, 200520 yr With the salary hike Dunn is getting and Cincy's probable un-willingness to take on much of that salary might put a snag in that kind of deal. Why if we trade him would we take any of his salary? That would just be stupid on our part.
November 1, 200520 yr Because his salary is going up into the $8 mil range I heard. It is, but the guys is a 40-100 guy. We aren't looking to dump his slaray (like we are with Junior) if we are going to trade him, we better not take on his salary and we better get lots for him. He is a mid 20s 40 homer guy. He is well worth 8 millon dollars.
November 1, 200520 yr I am not disagreeing with you on that part, I am just saying it might not be financially feasible for the Marlins to take on his salary as well when we are right now trying to see if we can get rid of Lowell's.
November 1, 200520 yr Patterson has amazing talent...he has just never really had good coaching to break him of all of his bad habits. I would love to have him on our team personally, could be a major heist for us.

JP is proven commodity, while Patterson is one of the Cubs biggest headaches. I don't want to see the Marlins trade away 200 hits a season and 50-60 stolen bases, but if they do I feel comfortable in saying they'll get hell of alot more than Corey Patterson and a failed minor league pitcher. If I wanted to trade JP for a headache who I thought needed a change of scenery I'd take Milton Bradley over Corey Patterson at the same $$$, not that I really want Bradley.
November 1, 200520 yr his upside is worth it ... now depending on salary and years left of arby it might be worth a hard look
November 1, 200520 yr the question with JP is the same as you have with Lowell. one year aberration or a sign of things to come....
November 1, 200520 yr I pointed out in a previous thread that the difference between JP hitting .276 and .300 turned out to be something like 16 hits over the season. If you look at his 3-4-5 (take your pick) year stats I think you get a pretty picture of what can be expected of the guy. He still reached base over 220 times last season. All this talk about JP having an "off year" (not you Catch, but generally) is really misplaced. Could he have done better in 2005? Absolutely. But that could be said of almost everyone on the team, which as a group underachieved.
November 1, 200520 yr I dont want this to happen!!! JP has one bad year and all this talk about trading him!!?? Yea he cant throw and has no arm but who cares!!! THIS GUY CAN HIT RUN AND PLAY GREAT D! And hes not like a 100 MILLION DOLLAR player... he isnt that expensive!! If the Marlins get rid of JP i think they will be making a BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE!
November 2, 200520 yr With a new hitting coach JP will get those 16 hits back. He's not going anywhere.
November 2, 200520 yr Does anyone think the Cubs would give one of their starters (Prior,Wood,Maddux,Zambrano) for JP?
