December 7, 200520 yr I'm not sure if its true.. but I would guess it would just be a filler for their minor league rotation maybe? Maybe someone like Ungs?
December 7, 200520 yr Ummm.....there's more to having a baseball franchise then pitchers... There's like.... 8 other positions :plain
December 7, 200520 yr Cubs | More On Pierre Trade Wed, 7 Dec 2005 00:20:00 -0800 Clarifying and updating a previous item, cubs.MLB.com's Carrie Muskat is reporting the Chicago Cubs have acquired OF Juan Pierre and an unnamed pitching prospect from the Florida Marlins in exchange for Double-A pitching prospects Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto. Cubs P Sergio Mitre is not considered part of this trade. ---------------------------------------------------------- I gotta believe THIS is wrong and we get Mitre and the Cubs get just Pierre as ESPN is reporting.

December 7, 200520 yr I'm pretty sure they will trade some of these young arms for young position players. Some of you are acting that once you make a trade you are stuck with the players you get in return forever.
December 7, 200520 yr Rotoworld's take: The Marlins have tentatively agreed on a deal to send Juan Pierre to the Cubs for pitchers Sergio Mitre, Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. Not a bad deal for the Cubs. Mitre wasn't in the team's plans for 2006, and Pinto's stock has fallen quite a bit. Nolasco is the pitcher here they're most likely to regret parting with, though he's probably not ready yet. Mitre should move right into Florida's rotation. Pierre will likely start in center field and bat leadoff for the Cubs. The team still could go after Milton Bradley to play right field. Dec. 7 - 3:31 am et
December 7, 200520 yr this is horrible, i woke up this mourning and have the RSS feed of news from the florida marlins and it said there were 2 new news segments. I was honestly affraid to look at them knowing that it had to be because JP was traded. I almost cried. its sad how we can just get rid of him, he was my favorite player. I still remember when him and Dontrelle were rapping in the parade after we won in 03' god its sad. Can someone KILL SAMSON PLEASE!
December 7, 200520 yr True it is... Reported by MLB.com http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article...e2005&fext=.jsp
December 7, 200520 yr So after as many as 10 teams were in the bidding for JP, this is the best they could do? You're telling me there wasn't one team that could offer a position player that would fit a need?
December 7, 200520 yr True it is... Reported by MLB.com http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article...e2005&fext=.jsp Like what Stag5 had, there is no mention of Mitre...
December 7, 200520 yr well it says "a package that includes Nolasco and Pinto".... True, but you would think he would be the key to the deal, and not a throw-in later.
December 7, 200520 yr My theory on the pitching prospects is that they havent abandoned their "pitching wins championships" philosphy. We probably have around 10-12 pitching prospects now right? I think they hope that if two of them can replace Beckett and Burnett(or at least develop into solid sub 4 ERA pitchers), theyve effectivley created a new big three with Willis included.

But we need to fill holes at 2B and at least one outfield position.
December 7, 200520 yr Baseball America rated Pinto as the Cubs 6th best prospect in January '05. He pitched well in AA Southern League in '05, (130 IP, 2.78 ERA, 58 BB, 123 K) then badly in a short AAA stint (22 IP, 9.53 ERA, 24 BB, 24 K). Got some issues with walks it seems. :confused He's a lefty, maybe send him to the pen.

Get the best talent without worrying about need. You worry about need if you're one or two pieces away from a championship team and you need to fill a gap or two. We're light-years away from contending at this point, so you get what you can. That being said, I would have tried for Brian Dopirak, but hey! By the way, what's all this crap about the Cubs souring on Ricky Nolasco? Looks like he had a pretty damn good AA season last year... Ricky Nolasco: Individual Stats (Pitching) -- AA From To W L ERA G GS IP H R ER HR BB SO 04/08 09/05 14 3 2.89 27 27 161.2 151 57 52 13 46 173 Oh, my bad. The Cubs soured on Reynel Pinto, not Nolasco. Pinto's numbers at AA were also good: From To W L ERA G GS IP H R ER HR BB SO 05/09 09/05 10 3 2.71 22 21 1 1 0 129.2 101 43 39 3 58 123 But he was demoted from AAA -- where he bombed... December 7, 200520 yr Mitre is great He beat Josh beckett a couple of times this year I think and has shown he can pitch One of the best pickups we have made Without JP the lockerrooms are going to be very sad and Willis wont have his best friend around so maybe he suffers mentally too
December 7, 200520 yr The Angels and Devil Rays are discussing a deal that would send Joey Gathright and/or Toby Hall to Anaheim. Brandon Wood wouldn't be on the table, but the Rays could try for one or two of the Angels' other young middle infielders, a group that includes Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar, Maicer Izturis and Alberto Callaspo. Why couldnt we get one of them studs for pierre? Seriously, they are loaded with middle infield. We couldnt acqurie any of them? Cmon
December 7, 200520 yr BA rated Pinto as the Cubs 6th best prospect. But that was last year. Given his troubles at AAA, it's likely he would have falled from the top 10 if the Cubs had kept him. That being said, I think this is a good trade for the Fish. You know, lots of people here are complaining that we got too many pitchers from the fire sale and not enough position players. But did anyone complain when we drafted 1B Jason Stokes the round after taking fellow 1B Adrian Gonzalez? No. We drafted the best available talent. Simple. Stokes had been projected by some to be a high 1st rounder. We took a chance on him because the conventional wisdom was that he was going to college. Ultimately, the fact that we had both made Adrian Gonzalez expendable, and we traded him for Ugie for our 03 stretch run. Don't fret about all the pitching prospects. The FO tried to get maximum value for each vet, and with the exception of the Luis trade, I think they succeeded.

I wouldn't go so far as "great". He started 7 games, had 3 good ones & 4 terrible ones.

You probably are right I only saw a couple of Cubs games on the Cubs channel and he always had quality starts and impressed me
