Fernandez a first-timer on Hall's ballot

Ten-year veteran's career ended because of injury

 

MIAMI -- In a 10-year big league career, Alex Fernandez gave everything he had on the mound until his right arm finally gave out.

 

A true competitor, Fernandez left it all out on the field, and in the process built an impressive legacy. Brought up by the Chicago White Sox in 1990, the stocky right-hander went on to become one of the elite pitchers in the American League before he signed as a free agent with the Florida Marlins in 1997.

Interested to see what people think about this. I mean the guy didnt have to much of a career yet hes on the ballot? I mean I wouldnt mind seeing him in but If it does get in this LOWERS the HOF standard BIG TIME!!

I voted No. I appreciate what he did for the '97 team but I don't think he did enough over the course of his career to get in. Kevin Brown might have better luck when he retires. The ERA in '96 with the Fish was sick

What the f@#%? How is this even a conversation? There are many scrubs place on the ballot. It's part of the routine. In fact, I believe that if you play for a certain amount of time or make a certain number of appearances, you are automatically placed on. It doesn't mean that there has to be a discussion on every guy that's placed on. Are we going to have this discussion when Craig Counsell or Charles Johnson is placed on the ballot? Come on, Jose Oquendo was once on the ballot. Do you think that White Sox fans are running a poll like this for Jack McDowell? Or Phillies fans for Gary Maddox? Mariners fans for Alvin Davis? Expos fans for Charlie Lea, Al Oliver, or Bill Gullickson? Astros fans for Cesar Cedeno? Cards fans for George Hendrick? Padres fans for Carmelo Martinez or Ed Whitson? Royals for Frank White? Tigers fans for Walt Terrell? Orioles fans for Storm Davis? Blue Jays fans for their pick of Jesse Barfield, Lloyd Moseby, George Bell, Pat Hentgen, or Jimmy Key? Twins fans for Kent Hrbek, Tom Brunansky, or Gary Gaetti? Cubs fans for Leon Durham, Shawon Dunston, or Jody Davis?

 

I can go on and on.

 

This is the type of thread that I would expect from Mets fans, not Marlins fans. Have the few of us that exist totally lost all sense of sanity that we have reosrted to discussing whether or not a # 2 starter, whose career was cut short, should be in the H.O.F.? The only way he gets in is if the Hall opens a section on excellent pitching talents whose careers were ruined by Jeff Torborg. Alex Fernandez still wouldn't be the best in that section either. Look at the list of pitchers from Cleveland to Chicago to N.Y. to Montreal to Florida. Alex Fernandez is in the middle of that pack.

He's not even close. I predict that he will fail to get enough votes to even stay on the ballot after this year's vote.

I know this guy, I go to parties that he is always at, his brother Angel is a DJ. As for a person he sucks, for a baseball player he was great but didn't put enough time into the game to be a hall of famer.

Of all the players from the '97 team, he's the one "star" who probably has the worst shot of getting into the Hall, actually, should probably say 'no shot.'

 

The Marlins have only had two conceivable Hall of Famers on the team, Sheffield and Pudge. After that we get into the what could be debate with guys like Cabrera, Willis, Beckett, Castillo and Delgado.

He put up great numbers. Maybe if he could've put up 5 more decent years then he would've made it.

Walt Weiss is also on the HOF ballot this year. Something tells me it's not terribly difficult to get your name on there.

The only Marlin that has a shot at the hall at this point is Dawson. I guess Sheffield might be borderline.

 

 

Pudge will probably receive serious consideration

I figure for that to happen, the Yanks cannot keep him past 2006, he can't win a World Series in New York, and he needs to get to 500 homeruns and then retire without another World Series ring.
