Marlins sign Reese, Borowski

December 29, 2005

MIAMI (AP) -- Infielder Pokey Reese and right-hander Joe Borowski signed one-year contracts Thursday with the Florida Marlins.

Reese spent all of last season on the disabled list with the Seattle Mariners following surgery on his right shoulder. He hit .221 in 96 games with Boston in 2004.

A two-time Gold Glove winner, Reese has batted .248 with 44 home runs and 271 RBIs over eight seasons in the majors. He's a potential successor to Luis Castillo, traded to Minnesota as part of the Marlins' offseason payroll purge.

Borowski went 1-5 with a 4.47 ERA in 43 games last season for the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay. He is 14-23 with 44 saves and a 3.90 ERA in nine seasons in the majors. The Marlins are his sixth team

If posted, sorry!

nope, not posted yet. Good signing of Pokey, in case one of our infield spots doesn't pan out. Borowski's a solid arm to add to the pen.

Good moves. The players themselves are nothing spectacular, but both will help with a very young team.

Pokey brings them solid defense... Borowski brings them experience in the 'pen and this gives him opportunity, so ... good moves I guess...

Joe Borowski = Older Nate Bump....

I think i found my new whipping boy

Great move, Reese bring D to the field while Borrowski adds depth and experience to the 'pen.

I love me some Pokey. That guy is awesome, even if he can't hit.

beinfest is a stud GM about the only good guy in the front office for the fish

WOW! Totally didn't expect that. Some good moves there. Borowski might have a rebound season, you never know.

Remember when the fish signed decent players in the offseason? :confused

Don't sleep on Matt Cepicky

I totally agree. Beinfest might be the most creative and resourceful GM there is considering what he has to work with. I think he's done an amazing job in building this team for the future.

good moves. Pokey can start at 2nd or if Uggla/HanRam don't do well, and he is also a decent bench player to have.

Borowski, if nothing else, can help tutor our young pen.

so we now have pokey, miguel olivo 2 real good defensive players.we have hitting for sure this year , we just need some proven arms in the bullpen and I think we will be good this year.

He can hit. He's also one of the best baserunners/basestealers in the game.

He's a career .248 hitter.

No, he can't (well, ok, he is 25% or less of the time), and, yes, he is.

His .248 career average says otherwise.

But it doesn't matter, I'm glad we signed him. I've always liked him.

Borowski will be a great influence to the guys in the pen.. Nobody has worked harder to get to the majors than him. A great guy to have.
