Former Marlins - Closer edition

Featured Replies

Armando was the best closer in Franchise history in my mind. This guy was automatic. I just never saw him being nothing short of amazing. This guy was a huge pick up. A huge plus is that he is proven to be a good closer but when he joined the Marlins he was engraved in many minds as a top of the line closer. If you dont believe me look at his fat contract that the Giants gave him.

I miss the ever popular Vic Darensbourg.

Nen...I remember the years of him trying to out-wit hitters only to see his changeup sent 450ft. Later he learned that he need not fool anyone...because he could throw it by them. I miss him.

Bryan Harvey too for the same reasons I miss Burkett. He was probably our most dominating stopper even though his time here was so short.

Benitez was the most dominant closer in Marlins history, he was a monster. If you needed a clutch strikeout, of ANY pitcher in Marlins history, I would have called on Benitez.

...but i'm going with Ugy for obvious reasons.

Armando was terrific but if you didn't see Bryan Harvey in '93, you didn't the greatest reliever in Marlins history.

Robby Nen, I remember when he use to come out of the pen in 97 throwing gas.

Rob Nenn was my favorite of all time. But Bryan Harvey is definetly the sickest talent closing we ever had. And thats saying a lot because we've had the likes of Trevor Hoffman (Albeit he didn't close for us but still), Armanda Benitez, and Ugueth Urbina.

I voted for Nen but I thought that game Armando came in in Philly on a 3-0 count and no outs and got out of the inning was unbelievable. I believe the bases were loaded too.

3-1 count, bases loaded, one out.

Nen, just because a lot of the other "dominant" closers (Harvey, Benitez, Jones) were all here for a short time. Nen at least gave me enough time to get attached to him.

Harvey has the best numbers. Benitez seemed most dominant. But my vote goes to Mantei, based on the ice girls, and the fact that he was my best customer and entree into many other Marlins and Diamondback pitchers, including R.J., who became my best customer by far.

You HAD to remind me about Nunez?! I forgot about him.

Dammit.

It's tough between Nen and Benitez and Jones. The latter seemed almost automatic and Nen was always making it interesting. But Nen was here for so long and was probably the most talented, I remember watching him break 100 several times (102 in the Series I believe)...so I'm gonna go with Nen.

from what i remember of the ice girls they were just flat chested teenagers. :confused

ill go Nen since he was here for a few years. cant deny how sick bryan harvey was though.

I was too young to fully be able to appreciate Harvey's season in 93, but Benitez's 04 season was truly something of lore. He carried that entire bullpen on his back, and it was the first time in a long time that you knew when our closer came into the game it was a done deal. If it weren't for Armando, we would have been out of the playoff race that season a lot earlier than September.
