April 25, 200620 yr I wouldn't give the offense a break, either. We struck out, what, 14 times? *cough* Aggy and Reggie. We had so many chances to get a run or two here and there. Although this meltdown is on the bullpen, this team can't expect to win close games with Chris Aguila in the starting line-up on a consistent basis. He is a September call up folks. You cant polish a turd. and the difference between he & Abercrombie would be? I just thought I could throw in a Aguila bash without anyone noticing. Guess it didnt work.
April 25, 200620 yr Just spending chump change on a decent pen would have us sitting at .500 or above Yep. Should have bought a kid from the independent leagues (Donnelly) or signed a crafty veteran (Mulholland) or career minor leaguer (Shileds) Relief pitchers are inconsistent beasts. Paying them and expecting them to produce as they have is a mistake. A good bullpen is one that keeps its composure, throws strikes, offers different (although not too specialized) tools and is utilized well by a manager. It doesn't need to be dominating, it simply needs to be a suportive piece to a durable starting staff and consistent offense. Surely we could use a few more control artists out there and maybe better management, but this cast is far from terrible. It's simply disappointed your unrealistic expectations
April 25, 200620 yr I wouldn't say Vargas pitched well. The stats were pretty (some of them), but how many hitters did he start out with a ball, and how many times did he go to a 3-ball count? Too many. on top of that, how many balls were hit to the warning track? I would say he was more lucky than dominating yeah, but hitting it to the warning track at wrigley.... still considering his era was 7+ going into tonight it's tough to be sold on him after one good start.
April 25, 200620 yr Unfortunately, you need to brace yourself to see quite a bit more of these kind of meltdowns this season. Let's be honest, who does Girardi have to send out there to snuff out late inning opportunities? Nobody.
April 25, 200620 yr Just spending chump change on a decent pen would have us sitting at .500 or above Just using the pen correctly would have at around .500 who should he have put in? I would have never put Herges after Vargas(would have put Johnson or Nolasco) but after Herges got out of the 7th, Johnson clearly should have started the 8th. what ever happened to german the big benitez looking dood...and we sure seem to strike out alot as a whole team...can any one get the actual number of team strikeouts...we need Hermmida back ASAP...and any word on Carlos Martinez I can't wait for Carlos, he could easily be our two inning guy reminds me alot of K-Rod Yea lets ruin his arm by throwing him out there everyday for 2 innings.
April 25, 200620 yr The four web gems are also worth mentioning. The guys showed some awesome defense tonight.
April 25, 200620 yr The four web gems are also worth mentioning. The guys showed some awesome defense tonight. Yep. Too bad we can enjoy them with a win.

April 25, 200620 yr SP, Defense.... Good start to win some game in the years to come... The bullpen will be fixed as the years go on Hopefully that can be addressed soon, but I don't know where we'll get the help. AAA ? I know Loria won't spend for the pen.
April 25, 200620 yr Unfortunately, you need to brace yourself to see quite a bit more of these kind of meltdowns this season. Let's be honest, who does Girardi have to send out there to snuff out late inning opportunities? Nobody. Clearly not Herges and he shouldn't extend relivers when other guys are well rested.
April 25, 200620 yr it's my fault! I was watching the game and told my g/f, "oh look its JP!"...then he hit a double :plain but THEN, we left to the grocery store :banghead :plain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 25, 200620 yr I wouldn't say Vargas pitched well. The stats were pretty (some of them), but how many hitters did he start out with a ball, and how many times did he go to a 3-ball count? Too many. Are you stupid? This guy pitched his heart out tonight. Great pitch selection 90% of the time. Great to see our starters getting on track even if it doesn't matter what our starters do. Our bullpen would blow a 60 run lead in one inning.
April 25, 200620 yr Too bad Herges started this crap. He's a death sentence when he comes in. And he is supposed to be our "Veteran Leadership". Its gonna be very tough this year. If these guys get too down we may see some stretches of 15 and 20 losses in a row.

April 25, 200620 yr I'm kinda surprised at all the love Vargas is getting..... :plain The man gave up 1 hit in 6 innings. What would you like?
April 25, 200620 yr With a 65 million payroll last year we got a suck bullpen..........so how could we got a bullpen that "just OK" with 14 million this year, don't hope our pen have any upgrade........what we have now will be what we have in the end of season :banghead :banghead :banghead
April 25, 200620 yr I just thought I could throw in a Aguila bash without anyone noticing. Guess it didnt work. :lol

Shame Shame Shame Shame Shame :nono I'm to blame too, I was watching in the Florida Room and left to watch in my bedroom where the 'puter is, cuz I had a bunch of email to read and answer. I watched the meltdown in there....I should have stayed in the Florida Room. :thumbdown

Yeah moron I'm saying send him out there everyday for 2 innings. In close situations like tonight he is your number 1 bridge to your closer
April 25, 200620 yr Holly it was a bit better, but that bullpen was the reason we didn't make the playoffs

With all those web gems you would think luck was on our side.
