San Antonio Deadline Countdown

San Antonio is out of the game as long as any site in South Florida is extremely serious.

You might as well just say 2 mil for SA. But you are definitely correct.

Except for sheer volume, the numbers are probably similar. Similar percentage hispanic, similar poverty percentage, similar mean age, etc. But the volume definitely wins out.

SA is last resort, and the fact that the Marlins haven't just told SA to buzz off means they are not yet convinced a deal will be worked out for Hialeah.

Except this is one thing he will never get done. An ill-conceived and effort over his head. So yes, he will look silly.

Well you guys certainly seem to be authorities on silly. Remind me again how long South Florida politicos have been trying to get this done? Is it 9 or 10 years now? Just curious.

The team has been trying to get a stadium for almost 9 years now. That doesn't mean all that much though. These things usually do take years. The Brewers fought for 13 years before getting their park built. The Twins have probably been at it longer than that.

Good point. And I guess that is one of the reasons why the Marlins wont do anything before the deadline. I am sure that they were shocked to be able to get a stadium plan from the Judge so quickly. He probably really took them off guard as a result.

So shocked that they've responded with nothing.

Nothing would be correct, unless you consider the fact that they have apparently chosen the Longhorn Quarry as their preferred site as being something. I think site selection is a telling sign and definitely is something.

Telling sign of what? You think selecting a site is closing the deal? The Marlins simply don't want to burn any bridges in case the deal with Hialeah falls through. The simple truth of the matter is that if they get a stadium in So. Florida they're not going anywhere. I hope you realize that.

Of course I realize that. I just dont think it will happen in Hialeah. And right now that seems to be the only option on the table in South Florida. Now......if something were to happen in downtown Miami and there was movement on that front, then I would think that SA would be out. But as long as Hialeah is the only option on the table, SA is very much in the game. But that is just my opinion.

Yes I see your opinion, but your opinion is very far fetched....San Antonio residents need to realize that they are being used as a PAWN and are being held up for a South Florida site to step up. And that is just what Hialeah is done.

Hialeah is a viable site for many Marlins fan down here in South Florida. As for San Antonio still being very much in the game you might as well go the route of your San Antonio population and start trolling other sites such as the Minnesota Twins or Oakland A's. Good Luck to you sir.

As I said above....San Antonio has one week to convince the Marlins to leave South Florida. Which won't happen. If the Judge can't get this on the Novem. 2006 ballot it won't happen. San Antonio is dead where they stand.

I wouldn't go as far to say that SA is a pawn. I think SA has proven it is at least a good prospect market for MLB, and MLB would definitely let a team move here if they couldn't get something down in their current markets. Part of the reason talks went further with SA than any other potential market is because MLB has been interested in us for about a decade and they wanted a fuller investigation of us. Other than that the primary reason was leverage, followed by last resort.

As far as the other teams, they are dropping like flies. A's have nearly completed a deal with Fremont, and the Twins funding passed both chambers of the State Legislature, although in vastly different forms. The Twins bill is going to be conference committeed and the difference ironed out and as long as it sticks closer to the House version instead of the Senate version, it's basically a done deal.

And while I agree with you in that Longhorns Rule often behaves way too trollish, he does have some good ideas to help ensure financial stability should a team come here. Personally I think he and I together could come up with an excellent marketting strategy that would benefit everyone in the SA area.

Nov 2007 is absolute last chance for the Marlins moving to SA, and that's simply because they have no lease anywhere after 2010 and we'd need that time to construct the stadium. The Nov 2006 is the best chance because the governors race will bring increased poll turnout which would favor the measure. After that, 2008 is the best chance for a sports franchise to get public funding from SA/Bexar.

i agree with you completely that SA would make a good spot for a baseball team...but MLB which we all know will not move the Marlins there cause they don't want to leave Miami. TV market size has alot to do with it. SA is up and coming and you guys are very supportive of the Spurs and I think you guys are like second on the list for an expansion football team (Behind LA) even though you might land the Saints at some point.

MLB wise you guys could be one of the top priorties. You never know...just don' t know how MLB feels about expansion right now with so many teams struggling.

As for the Marlins lease situation they have options from now til 2010 and nothing after that according to Huizenga. The Marlins would love to move out b4 then since the options are year-to-year.

Good Luck to SA in getting a team....im just going to be very grateful that it isn't the Marlins

Yup. MLB has been eying SA (we've been the steadiest growing MSA for 50+ years and one of the fastest growing for the last 10) because of all the teams that are struggling. When so many teams are struggling it usually means at least one (in this case it was the Expos) and potentially more are moving.

The TV Market size and the fact that the Astros basically have guaranteed televised into SA rights is a big pain. TV size is a little misleading for SA though. The whole family size thing.

We certainly are second on the list for NFL, even though Tags definitely hates that. I'm honestly hoping the Jags move to SA for some poetic revenge. Jax was given that franchise over SA even though it was a smaller market in just as crowded a region because they thought it would grow faster than SA. A decade later and it's even smaller compared to SA. LOVE IT! (no offense to any jacksonvillians or whatever your called, just a little hatred at Tags). And I still think if the NFL ends up expanding into LA, they'll put a team here as well just to keep the even number.

I honestly believe that the league itself wants a team in SA, as soon as they are convinced that Sa can support it (and the league isn't in any sort of financial danger) because SA has such strong ties not just with Mexico, but with quite a bit of Central and South America (particularly Argentina right now thanks to Manu and co.).

I'll keep my hopes up for something, anyway.

Big O said it best the other day...

If the Marlins move to San Antonio, Loria and Co as well as MLB will be sh*tting their pants because of all the money lost just from TV revenue.

Great response there! And you are EXACTLY right! There is no way that MLB WANTS to leave Miami. And anyone that thinks they do is dead wrong. But what I do see is that if they are not given a stadium that will absolutely GUARANTEE the longterm success and stability of this franchise, they might not have any other choice but to move.

Granted if they don't get a stadium they would go....but a stadium deal is imminent according to what ive heard in the under world...cause that is where i hang out in the underworld.....marlins fans need to be patient.... :D

Good luck to SA in the future

You hang out in the "underworld"? I'm still new to this site so I don't know everyone that well, can you tell me what you do? Thanks. :)

P.S. I'm curious because I see a lot of people making these claims and I don't know who to trust because I really don't know how you know what you do. If you're actually "in the know" that's great, but if you're just another fan then I'd like to know that too. Thanks. :)

i cant wait until the marlins break ground in hialeah so the san anton homers will leave to start their own website called "whywedonthaveamlbteam.com"

Amen to that!!!!!

Also, Mr. Longhorn, I find a hint of racism in your comments when you keep on using the word "politicos" when you refer to South Florida politicians in a negative fashion. So, please, stop.

I have know idea how you find racism in that. It just means the politicians as a whole, though often is used with a connotation hinting at ineffectiveness or corruption. It has no racial connotations at all... It's been commonly used since at least the 50's I believe, and was extremely common in the 80's...

I think he thought it was spanish because of the "o".

lol

San Antonio's metro population is 2 million.

Hotcorner Posted Today, 12:48 AM: uh, that's not a rascist comment.

Rascist comments are obvious, all others are in the eyes of the beholder.

Being Latino the word "Politico" isn't offensive. It's been used for decades, by the way the word "Politico" isn't only address at Latinos, but all in general, Hispanic/Whites/Blacks, etc.

I've said before we (as a city) don't particularly care if its NFL or MLB, we just want another team.

You can take the Dolphins. :lol

Remember the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants actually SAID they were moving to Tampa Bay. Giants officials even held a press conference in Tampa with local officials. Did that happen ????

Please go troll elsewhere.

You think I'M a troll? You must have a loose definition of the word.

I've never thought the Marlin's were coming to SA (though I admit for the first few weeks until I started looking at the comparisons I was hopeful). I've never said they should. Heck, I've said MLB should cover the funding gap to keep the Marlins in the Miami area.

If you're upset that I mentioned the Marlins specifically with a move, it's because that particular deadline would only apply to the Marlins...

Dont worry man. Most of the venom is directed at Longhorns_Rule, who is obviously trolling. He's just given you all a bad name.

Yeah, see... personally if I wanted to troll, I'd be bugging Twins fans or KC fans. At least it would be understandable for their teams to move here since the market size is much less of an issue. Longhorn seems like an okay person when he's not talking about "inside information" that says both MLB and Loria would rather come to SA than Hialeah.

Longhorn's got some good ideas too. If he doesn't already, Longhorn should hang out on an SA urban development forum like urban planet or something. He'd probably enjoy that, though they aren't very active.

:thumbup True, no worries fyatuk.

I've said before we (as a city) don't particularly care if its NFL or MLB, we just want another team.

You can take the Dolphins. :lol

I would pack the marlins personally before I let the dolphins leave.

But I think the Bills could be a good option for SA honestly. They are looking for a possible move and it would fit them. The chance of the Dolphins Ever leaving south florida is none to none. They are worth too much and make too much. We are actually considered a major market in Football.

Which is exactly why baseball wants to be down here. If they can grow the tradition, they can grow the fan love and support and support the community like the dolphins have for years. If they can grow some rivalries like the Dolphins vs Jets, or Fins vs Bills. Then they can become a middle to major market in baseball even. The population is here, you just need to hook them.

when the fins came, the people down here were giants, browns, steelers, etc. fans. But, that changed and it can change with the future generation of yankees, mets, braves, etc fans down here now. It just takes time and getting them to go to the games, find players they love and love to root for.

If the marlins get the stadium and stop doing firesales and keep players in 10 years time they could be one of the top 10 franchises in baseball if they market it right.

I would pack the marlins personally before I let the dolphins leave.

I can't see the Bills moving. The apparently have a huge canadian following. I still think the mostly likely to be looking to be moving are the Jags and Vikes, if the stadium/revenue stream issues aren't fixed there.

But you're right about needed to develop some good rivalries and string together several playoff seasons. If the Marlins can do that, the fan base will turn. People tend to follow whoever they are innundated with. Especially when children are exposed to it.
