May 15, 200620 yr I expect ptchers bouncing back and forth between the minors, bullpen and starting to get them familiar with major leaguers and protect them from psychological or physical abuse.
May 15, 200620 yr It'll be interesting to see whether Pinto or Petit gets to stay. I think Petit is more refined at this point. His control is there, even if he wasn't producing particularly well at AAA....Pinto still has those control issues and seems a bit more raw. Granted, this is an 'observation' based on stats and reports. I haven't seen either pitch. Good times a-coming. It's already middle of May. We're getting closer to 2007.
May 15, 200620 yr I expect ptchers bouncing back and forth between the minors, bullpen and starting to get them familiar with major leaguers and protect them from psychological or physical abuse. Geez...just flying back and forth between Albuquerque and somewhere in the PCL is psychological and physical abuse!! It's at least two flights to anywhere!! LOL
May 15, 200620 yr Anyone else think German wouldn't be proclaiming himself miraculously "ready" if Jason Vargas hadn't just been sent down? As Al Capone put it, "You can get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word..." (A Lesson Jeff Torborg never learned.)
May 15, 200620 yr Wellemeyer is odd man out when ppl start coming back. i think that was a great move by the club to give Vargas more time, his control just hasnt been there and it usually is. Pinto gives us a left hander which we could use more in situational pitching. Felt like Vargas was just long relief, now we got Petit to fill that void. i think everything looks great right now, its just time to let these guys do their jobs
May 15, 200620 yr Girardi warned them a few days ago that if they didn't start producing at the major league level they wouldn't be playing at the major league level. Olsen was smart enough to understand what Petit's arrival meant. Obviously Vargas didn't the memo and true to his word, Girardi let everyone know who's the boss and what it takes to stick. Great move Joe, I'm impressed. Exactly. No one can say they weren't given a chance. Those who were unable to respond now have to step aside and let the new guys have at it. Can you imagine the results this ballclub could acheive if Nolasco/Petit and Pinto can have reasonably good rookie years?
May 15, 200620 yr so wait im confused r u guys excited to see pinto tomorrow or something else they are expecting something else, I believe an announcement of something. But never know.
May 15, 200620 yr According to the marlins website Jason Vargas was sent down to Triple A. I think it was a bad idea considering his experience. *merged topics*
May 15, 200620 yr I heard we're in for another surprise tomorrow..... hermida!?!? :pray Who knows. Today is tomorrow so we will see.. Or is it a tease? :mischief2
May 16, 200620 yr ATLANTA -- A year ago, Jason Vargas made a rapid rise to the Major Leagues, and the left-hander performed admirably under tough circumstances. But Vargas has struggled throwing strikes, first as a starter and then as a reliever. So on Monday, the 23-year-old was officially optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. In nine games, with five starts, Vargas was 1-1 with a 6.40 ERA. He has walked 25 and hit four batters in 32 1/3 innings. "He lost some of his aggressiveness," manager Joe Girardi said. "He didn't have the command that he's had in the past with his fastball. Sometimes it's hard to work on those things here when you are working out of the bullpen. You don't get the side sessions. We just thought it was best that he went and got himself innings so we can get him back." Along with sending Vargas down, the Marlins recalled left-hander Renyel Pinto from Triple-A. Pinto was obtained by the Marlins from the Cubs in the Juan Pierre trade. A starter with the Isotopes, the lefty will be used in relief. Initially, Girardi doesn't plan on making him a left-handed specialist. Pinto replaces Vargas as the lone lefty in the Marlins bullpen. At Albuquerque, Pinto gave went 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in eight starts. Vargas never pitched in Triple-A. Last year, he opened the season in low Class A Greensboro before being promoted to Class A Jupiter and Double-A Carolina. He made three Double-A starts prior to being brought up last July. "Sometimes when you're struggling to throw strikes, you lose some of your aggressiveness," Girardi said of Vargas. "He's going down there to start fresh."
May 16, 200620 yr I hope Vargas isn't the only one after tonight's debacle. I've been hesitant to jump on Herges, but if they want to send a REAL message about guys not getting the job done, he should be gone. Show the players that just getting demoted isn't the worst that can happen.
