May 21, 200620 yr The bullpen is taking the brunt of the blame right now. But the pitching problem begins with the starters. They have been inconsistent and they will continue to be inconsistent. I expect the bullpen will improve, it would be hard for them to get much worse. As for our lack of offensive effort in the second half of games, I think it's more a case of veterans vs. rookies. And the veterans learn the tendencies of the batters after 2 times through the order. And the rookies don't know enough to adjust. It's not lack of effort, it's lack of MLB experience. thats a good way to put it, I will be more frustrated if were still going through this sort of thing in septmeber as opposed to now.

You can't win games when you only play at 50% effort for half the game. not always true. If your team scores 5 runs in the 1st inning your pitching should be able to hold the lead. In any major league game, an offense should not have to be expected to put up more than 5 runs to win a game. It's unreasonable to expect the pitching to hold that 5-run lead throughout the entire game without no help from the offense. When that 5-run lead becomes a 4-run lead then a 3-run lead, you'll find the other team playing with confidence meanwhile half of your team is playing like they've already packed their cleats. How's the final innings of that game going to work out? Not to your pitchers favor. They're facing fearless batter after fearless batter.

According to the stats on floridamarlins.com, Johnson has blown one, Herges four, Borowski six, Messenger and German one, and Kensing two. Yikes. So this has pretty much answered my question.

LOL......don't expect to see the Marlins on ESPN unless they have to show us. We got our one game on ESPN already this year, and it was for GD sure not at Dolphin Stadium.

HOWEVER, they've still been good enough to win more games than we have. It's the starter's job to pitch well enough for our offense to get a lead, whether it be for 3 innings or 8 innings. It's the offense's job to score enough runs to get a lead. If the startes and offense can do those two things, then I think they've done their jobs. It's the bullpen's job, on the other hand, to protect ANY lead they are given when they enter the game. That's what they get paid for. Any way that you look at it, the bullpen's to blame for quite a few of the team's recent losses, especially when you take into account the fact that our starters have been pitching well enough and our hitters have been producing enough offense to get us a lead in the late innings of the game.

Herges has pitched in way too many big situations Name me someone else in that bullpen that could have gotten the job done? I personally don't blame him for going with experience! Only guy I like off our bullpen is injured Carlos Martinez.

Any lead? We all fail at our jobs at times. Something that many fans don't expect from relief pitchers despite the examinations of their talent that led them to become relievers. This is a team game that lasts over nine innings. Starters who don't put in their fair share of work cause the bullpen the stress. An offense that dies after the 5th inning offers no motivational support to the bullpen. In war, the soldier who only uses his shield to fight will eventually find his head up on a pike. The same in baseball, that team that plays 2 innings ovr the last 4 will typically find its lead and the game lost.
