May 23, 200620 yr Noteworthy: Marlins rookie pitcher Ricky Nolasco did more Monday ? a homer and two RBI ? than Pierre has done all year (no homers, two RBI). Amazing. I thought this deserved its own thread. In one game he tied JP's numbers. Yikes. FloridaMarlins.com
May 23, 200620 yr This just in Marlins fans: Juan Pierre was heinously overrated. I still can't believe the obsession over a guy with one of the most hollow BAs in baseball. Bad defense, not great on the paths, a noodle arm, and terrible OBP skills.
May 23, 200620 yr I gotta disagree with u a little Fritz. He has good defense, excellent runner, his arm is not good at all. and his OBP has struggle but hes been good in the past. He is having a rough year like he had last year but he has hit in past years before that. People struggle and its the game of baseball so he'll be out of the funk soon enough as for Nolasco.. guy is just throwing it well all season, seems like that trade is HUGE right now
May 23, 200620 yr JP had a good '03 and a terrific '04, but he pretty much has to duplicate those numbers in order to have better than average value as a center fielder. You know you're not going to get a lot of extra-base hits from JP, and he doesn't walk much, so he's got to get bazillions of singles & steals. I think he was an integral part of the world series team & loved his work ethic & hustle. That said, I think Abercrombie has been just as good at making reads, and we've already seen him throw out a couple of runners at home. He just has some fundamental issues, where to throw the ball, when to hit the cutoff man, etc. I think Hendry & the Cubs were so disappointed they lost out on getting Furcal for a leadoff hitter, that they overspent on JP. Works for me!
May 23, 200620 yr Let's not overrate one game but is there any question that Nolasco, Mitre & Pinto are greater that JP? Definitly a deal worth doing. Remember what many were saying.....MORE pitchers?
May 23, 200620 yr Cub fans are delirious with what they have seen so far as a totally miss, i.e. giving up what they did for Pierre. Oh, and here is what JP said after last nights game: "You come off a big win against the White Sox, and you know the energy (playing before 9,462 fans) is not there," Cubs center fielder Juan Pierre said. "But as professionals you have to find a way to win the game." Now, they only won one game against the sox. Also, this is his first game here all year, so what is the reason he is hitting about .240, and only that high because he is on a little streak. Also, since the cubs have lost almost every game in May, why take a shot at the Marlin fans? -what is the excuse for the all the other losses-where is the energy JP?
May 23, 200620 yr I like the way this Cubs blogger put it: He [Cubs GM Hendry] got his ass handed to him on the Rafael Furcal deal by a GM who had been on the job 2 weeks. In fact, why Hendry wasn?t the one offering the three year deal that Furcal took from L.A.?particularly when Hendry has plenty of free agents looming?instead of the five year deal that he did offer is something we may never know. He got Juan Pierre to play centerfield and bat leadoff. And that was good. But, in losing out on Furcal, he lost any leverage he would have had in dealing with Florida for Pierre. Indeed, by Hendry having lost out on Furcal, Florida GM Admin Beinfest knew the pickle he was in. The result? Two very promising minor league arms and another guy?Sergio Mite?that looked promising and, now that he?s away from the devastating effects that Rothschild has on young pitchers? careers, will probably flourish in Miami.
May 23, 200620 yr Since when is it Pierre's job to hit home-runs and knock in runs? He still went 2-4 last night, can run it down in center and for all the lambasting he takes for an "empty" batting average, still manages to be among (not this season obviously) the most productive leadoff hitters in baseball, 100 runs from 2001, 2003-2004, 96 in 2005, 90 in 2002. Yeah, his OBP could be higher, but he isn't commanding 8 figures in salary either, with him, you get what you pay for...
May 23, 200620 yr Very poor comparision. Stats are an amazing way to diagnose the game. Shame people use them for these ridiculous exercises. Hot corner, Pierre was only great at the plate in 2004. He had a baserunning year. Really his only bad baserunning year (what's ya talking about, Fritz?). Still + poor defense + no power = teh suck
May 23, 200620 yr This just in Marlins fans: Juan Pierre was heinously overrated. I still can't believe the obsession over a guy with one of the most hollow BAs in baseball. Bad defense, not great on the paths, a noodle arm, and terrible OBP skills. fans love him for his hustle and because he's exciting to watch. he's the first one at the stadium and the last to leave. i used to love to watch his heart, hustle, and the speed- like in 2003 when he was getting all of those bunt hits and going first to third on a bloop hit. he was good with the fans, i got to talk to him a few times at the airport. :thumbup ..cool guy. he's one of the biggest cheerleaders on the team too. he works so hard to improve, he's always doing something-taking extra BP or rolling balls down the foul lines to see how they roll off..that's why he's one of my favorite players
May 23, 200620 yr JP's been around for years and doing it for years. Nolasco has had a few good starts and hasn't been even had a months worth of starts yet. Let's hold off comparisons until we really have a sample size worth talking about.
May 23, 200620 yr Trading JP was going to happen last year firesale or no firesale. We just happened to 'convince' the Cubbies to give us back some really good stuff in return. Great trade, considering JP had a horrible 2005 and some were questioning if he could bounce back.

Baseball is a business. I'll take performance, kthx.
May 24, 200620 yr JP is overrated as a leadoff man. To be a successful leadoff hitter, you should get on base at least 38% of the time. He does it at about .355 for his career. Also, in order to make stealing bases actually valuable, you should be at least above 75%. for his career, he's a 73% basestealer for his career. I let him know I didn't miss him tonight.
May 24, 200620 yr Juan Pierre was a wonderful player for us...He will be ok. Nolasco has been good for us up to now Beinfest was on the money on this one so far
May 24, 200620 yr Pierre was very good for the Marlins....they don't win the World Series in 2003 and probably miss the playoffs completely without him. He will be fine. Nolasco has looked pretty good so far, but it's a long season. We'll see how he does against a good hitting team.....which the Cubs definately don't qualify as one right now. Mitre has been better than I thought he would be, and as long as Pinto tightens up his control he should be ok too.
