July 12, 200620 yr Phil Garner was outmanaged alright. - Cabrera plays the field but doesn't bat? That makes no sense. Miggy should have been a PH and never seen the field IMO...not with Scott Rolen on the bench. Rolen would not have been out of position on the single in the 9th and the game would have been over. Even if Rolen was gaurding the line he would have had a much beter chance of making the play and throwing out Konerko at first base. - Staying on the field..not that it meant anything but up 2-1 in the 9th wuldn't you like to have Andruw Jones in the OF somewhere instead of Carlos Lee? - Garner put Berkman(never faced Johan Santana) up as a PH instead of Nomar(3-12 lifetime 2B, 3B). In the 9th inning against Santana it might have been nice to bat Berkman(from the left side) instead of Sanchez against Rivera. Not playing Uggla for an AB, a pinch run or even an inning in the field. Shame on him...first time All Stars should get to be 'in' an All-Star Game.
July 12, 200620 yr I bet Braves fans feel equally as cheated as us Marlins fans. Beltran plays the ENTIRE FRIGGEN GAME while Andruw Jones rots on the bench. at least they had renteria who got to start the game...

July 12, 200620 yr This game is supposed to count. What do you want? Either it counts and you play the starters most of the game or it doesnt count and everyone plays. Cant realistically have both, in a close game like that, you need to save some bullets for extras potentially. If Garner was really playing to win as if it counted, he would have put Andruw Jones and Scott Rolen in the game. ya, he should of focused on improving the defense out there..having the best defense out there on the field..and a solid pitcher on the mound

Beltran plays the ENTIRE FRIGGEN GAME while Andruw Jones rots on the bench. at least they had renteria who got to start the game... True, but seeing Andruw Jones who is your franchise player, a bonafide future hall of famer, and the best outfielder in the game rot on the bench during the All Star game of all places, is absurd. If Garner was going to keep Beltran in the whole game, he should have at least put Andruw Jones in LF or RF for a couple innings at least.

As you saw...the guys in back of the single smacked extra base hits. NO matter who is right....Rolen the better defensive player should have been out there along with Andruw Jones.

July 12, 200620 yr Rolen makes that play in the 9th.......Cabs shouldn't have been in at 3rd....You need your best defensive team out there.....Andruw needed to replace Lee as well.
July 12, 200620 yr hopefully marlins fans give Garner the same treatment they gave Bobby Cox when Dempster was the only player not put in the ASG

July 12, 200620 yr At least with Rolen you know how he would have at least made an attempt for the ball. I can't think of another 3B in the league that doesn't at least dive for that ball. would it have been an out? Maybe not, but you have to give more than 1step and a weak stretch of the glove.

If Garner was really playing to win as if it counted, he would have put Andruw Jones and Scott Rolen in the game. Beltran played wonderfully, keeping Beltran in was a great idea. He had half of a cycle and was wreaking havoc on the basepaths. Rolen, eh, maybe, but Wright had a great game as well. Get over it. Stop bitching about the great injustices and suck it up.
July 12, 200620 yr The only positive about this was that it completely screws the Mets and their fans......since their countin themselves in the World Series already.

I think Rolen has a chance at making it, he's made much harder plays. My point was the lack of effort on that ball by Cabrera. Olsen may have been right. Wrong for doing it out in the field, but correct overall.
July 12, 200620 yr Rolen makes that play in the 9th. No one makes that play when guarding the line. Period.

July 12, 200620 yr I just think that he had more than enough time to let all of the players get into the game, even if they didn't get an at bat. the game is important (ish), yes, but let every guy experience. you never know which one of those guys will be back again, so why not let them at least step onto the field? I really can't wait till the fish sweep the astros this weekend, that'd be priceless.
July 12, 200620 yr Most of ya'll are like dying because the N.L lost, and because many players didn't get playing time. You're all arguing over this B.S,while i'm pretty sure all the Players that were at the game whether they played or not were hella satisfied..To most of them it's not about winning or losing,it's about having fun,and being able to hang out with the best players in the league, and with their families.Hell i'm pretty sure some of the guys were told if they wanted to play, and they said no.Gardner is a good manager to me,but i guess we all have different thoughts.Ya'll look at it from your point of views, look at it as if you were the player, and you were tired and didn't feel like going up to the plate,or going out on the field, because you just want to rest and hang with the teammates.
July 12, 200620 yr It's understandable that some pitchers won't get to pitch in the ASG for the obvious reasons, but IMO it's pretty disgraceful that Phil Garner opted to forego giving plate appearances to FIVE different position players--Cabs, Uggla, Nomar, Andruw Jones, and Scott Rolen; the last four didn't even enter the game. In contrast, the only guy Ozzie didn't play on offense was AJ Pierzynski--his third-string, 'emergency' catcher. He even managed to get Jose Lopez a pinch-running opportunity (he scored). Anybody who doesn't find something at least a little wrong with how Garner went about managing the game either: A) Hasn't watched many all-star games, B) Is being an annoying contrarian, or C) All of the above I'm sorry, but you really can't defend the crap we just saw--particularly if you're a Marlin fan.
