July 16, 200620 yr From Berardino's column today: ALMOST GOLDEN: If Joe Girardi sticks with his plan to break up Matt Treanor's personal-catcher pairings with Dontrelle Willis and Scott Olsen, it could help the Marlins get their first catching Gold Glove since Charles Johnson was here in 1998. With Mike Matheny (concussion) still out and Brad Ausmus having an uncharacteristically bad year throwing out base stealers (11 percent), the door could be open for Miguel Olivo , who leads the league at 33 percent. Matheny (four) and Ausmus (two) have split the last six NL Gold Gloves. I'm sure Olivo would have Spike's vote... :whistle
July 16, 200620 yr and Brad Ausmus having an uncharacteristically bad year throwing out base stealers (11 percent), the door could be open for Miguel Olivo , who leads the league at 33 percent. actually, olivo is throwing out 40%, mike. and brad ausmus is throwing out 18%. good to know he checks his facts.
July 16, 200620 yr spike has a minor point in that Olivo has had more than average trouble on handling the baseball on certain plays. However, the point is far overblown for a guy, who combining all his tools, gives you at least league average defense.
July 16, 200620 yr :lol Thanks Berardino, I needed a chuckle. you making liking players so much easier :thumbup
July 16, 200620 yr What I've said for a while...the award is a total joke. This would further cement it tho.
July 16, 200620 yr What I've said for a while...the award is a total joke. This would further cement it tho. the gold glove at catcher is a total joke?
July 16, 200620 yr Olivo isn't good enough for the Golden Glove, if he wins it, the win would only serve to illustrate the ignorance of sportswriters. Olivo is a poor reciever, with a great throwing arm. With his offense he is an overall good catcher this season, but Gold Glove? No way.
July 16, 200620 yr I think we can all agree that there's more to catching than throwing out baserunners.
July 16, 200620 yr I continue to say that we need to give the rookies a couple of years before reaching any valid conclusions. As for Olivo, in the first half of the season his offense has been good. His arm is strong. He's meh at calling a game. And he seems to lack a major skill that someone in his position should have. He has a problem catching the ball. How many times have we seen balls pop out of his glove like there's a slinky in there? Other factors often get wrongly looked at when handing someone the gold glove. But to give the gold glove to Olivo based on his total defense this year would be absurd. Possibly after a couple of years under the tutelage of Girardi and Tuck he'll be a more complete defensive player.
July 17, 200620 yr What's even more amazing about this morning's column is that, at the time of publishing, not only does Yadier Molina lead the league in throwing out basestealers (47% caught stealing, compared to Olivo's 40%), but he had only allowed 17 stolen bases and had committed one error, compared to Olivo's 31 SBs allowed and four errors. All this despite Molina catching 130 innings more than Olivo. While Olivo's ability to throw out basestealers is impressive, there isn't a catcher in the league who is commanding the kind of respect from baserunners that Molina is.
July 17, 200620 yr Hopefully Olivo isnt on this team that long. Or past this year. so let me get this straight: 1) you dont like Olivo, Willingham, or Mitre 2) Olivo is a complete and utter fluke 3) you hope Olivo and Mitre are gone tomorrow, if that were possible am I missing anything?

All this despite Molina catching 130 innings more than Olivo. You have to consider the pitching staff the two catchers are handling. All the pitchers Olivo regularly has handled with the Fish have been rookies who just aren't capable of holding runners on, instead counting on Olivo's prowess to bail them out night after night. Teams would be running with abandon on most Marlins starters were it not for our catching tandem. One of the reasons teams run so infrequently run on the Cardinals is their pitchers. Put Molina behind the plate here, instead of handling a veteran staff of Mulder, Carpenter, etc., and you probably wouldn't see any numbers that surpassed Olivo's. The other thing of course that Marlins catchers face with this primarily rookie staff (and the same goes for the bullpen) is their inability to locate the ball with the precision or frequency that more mature staffs are able to do. You see Olivo/Treanor get crossed-up all the time, calling for an outside pitch and getting an inside pitch in the dirt. Olivo isn't without his sins but all in all he's done a helluva good job here, and comparing apples to apples can hold his own.
July 17, 200620 yr The Cardinals "veteran" staff...stat wise...is damn near identical to our staff. stats can be made to lie very very easily though dude.
July 17, 200620 yr The Gold Glove system is flawed (see former Marlin Alex Gonzales). Too often offensive statistics or being on a "name" team come into account. Anyone who thinks that Olivo doesnt work well for our $15 million dollar rebuilding team needs to get their ****in head examined.
July 17, 200620 yr Hopefully Olivo isnt on this team that long. Or past this year. Oh yeah, because having Matt Traenor in our lineup everyday would just light me up. :banghead
July 17, 200620 yr Hopefully Olivo isnt on this team that long. Or past this year. Oh yeah, because having Matt Traenor in our lineup everyday would just light me up. :banghead i doubt he meant so treanor would be our everyday catcher. i'm sure he wanted us to sign a decent FA catcher.
July 17, 200620 yr ... How many times have we seen balls pop out of his glove like there's a slinky in there? That made me laugh. :lol The Gold Glove system is flawed (see former Marlin Alex Gonzales). Too often offensive statistics or being on a "name" team come into account. Yes, indeed.
July 17, 200620 yr Can't we just be happy we found a young catcher who can hit and throw.. and does all this in the 7th/8th spot in the order? Man.. seriously. Lets not forget we have Girardi to work with him, so he's going to get better. Really, who thought we would have a catcher who can throw anyone out and is on pace for 20 dongs?
July 17, 200620 yr The Cardinals "veteran" staff...stat wise...is damn near identical to our staff. Which stats are you referring to? B/c in terms of runners stealing bases, the only thing that is worht looking at is the pitcher's ability to hold runners, how far the ball misses the strike zone when it is a ball. Runners the pitcher ha spicked off perhaps can be included. So please elaborate on 'stat' similarity
