August 16, 200619 yr Hopefully, we'll get through this season, and in the off season we'll keep Giraldi, and a stadium deal can be announced in the spring, when it benefits Loria, not to the tune of 15 million. It's more like 50 million. huh??? I'm not sure why I'm responding to such a well thought out and well written response.....but what exactly is it that you don't understand? how it's beneficial for loria to hold back on getting something done....im no expert on th subject but there is thing called inflation and rising steel prices...the longer he waits the more expensive any project becomes oh and if anyone thinks this stadium is going to cost 450M theyre nuts In a nutshell, the deal with MLB calls for a forgiveness of part of the loan PLUS a forgiveness of the interest on the loan PLUS a forgiveness of a 20% interest in future profits of the club for some years. It's been all calculated in LOONG depth in the past on these boards. But in my best estimation, it adds up to at least 50 million more in Loria's pocket if he holds off a reasonable length from the deadline to ink a deal. That would put it around spring of next year. As for rising prices, this is true, but it's no concern of Loria's, as he has no intention of putting any money into the deal. And he's probably right. A deal will be able to get done without it costing Loria a nickel. I also agree with others that a deal more beneficial to Tthe Marlins would happen with a local owner. But, unfortunately, Loria has the upper hand, and he has shown no willingness to sell. Why should he, from his point of view?
August 16, 200619 yr im sorry but loria is far and away the best owner this franchise has had...and he has proven time and again that he wants to see this franchise succeed...and besides...who else is going to pay the majority of the money for a new stadium unless we find a mega billionaire who buys the team I agree 100%. You're one of the smarter people on this board.
August 16, 200619 yr My problem with Loria is that he's two-faced. Yes, he wants the team to win, but then he does things like the fire-sale and the attempted firing of Girardi. I also don't believe that he had the money from the start to keep this team running. I would be willing to bet that he is the poorest owner in MLB right now.

At the end of the day, they're all still retarded.
August 16, 200619 yr If it weren't for the team's current success and Huizenga's previous firesale, everyone on this board would be hating Loria's guts right now. He did one of the worst possible things an owner could do, short of outright relocation (which, believe me, he would do in a heartbeat if a better deal were to come around). Jeffrey Loria is a stunning disgrace of an owner and an odious human being. im sorry but loria is far and away the best owner this franchise has had...and he has proven time and again that he wants to see this franchise succeed...and besides...who else is going to pay the majority of the money for a new stadium unless we find a mega billionaire who buys the team I agree 100%. August 16, 200619 yr Loria, let the team go. Giradi was your best pick in all terms and now your trying to boot him? Get out now and take that troll Samson with you. We keep Beinfest of course! And our scouting department! What a joke....Girardi tells his boss to be quiet....no wonder why he almost got canned. I want Girardi to go to the Cubs so we can see that he isn't that great. The media kisses this guys a$$ for some reason. My problem with Loria is that he's two-faced. August 16, 200619 yr The only way I'd want Loria to sell the team is if someone else has a contract IN THERE HAND to get a new stadium done. If not, what's the point? A new owner, a new battle with South Florida, but starting all over again. And the way things down there have gone during negotiations, even a "if you sell it to person X, we PROMISE to get the Marlins a new stadium" wouldn't even be enough for me.

August 16, 200619 yr Loria conned S. Florida fans into buying season tickets for one product then offered another....and then refused to give refunds. He has totally gutted a team....to the point that he is making a good bit of money off revenue sharing. He has dangled the franchise to any city that is willing to make an offer. Through his actions he basically has given a big middle finger to all the remaining South Florida fans. He has acted like a man who is trying to extract every bit of value from a business venue before washing his hands of it. All this, and yet some on this board will defend him to his grave. There should be no debate that this man is a terrible owner. Under probably any other ownership we would have had our stadium by now.
August 16, 200619 yr Giardi did not want to start Jonhson and Nolasco. Giardi didn't want to play Olivo very often. These were the suggestions of the front office. I think this young team would have done just as well without Giardi's influence. If I were his boss and Giardi barks at me in public I would also consider fireing him.

It is mindblowing to think that he will probably EARN $60 million over the next two years if payroll is not increased significantly, which amounts to the supposed stadium funding gap...yet, hell wll freeze over before a stadium gets built in Miami.

You are clueless. Let me remind you that we had two other owners that were unable to get a stadium built and hopefully we will have an announcement later this year that the Hialeah stadium will get done.

August 16, 200619 yr BREAKING NEWS: Marlins2003 has just beheaded the author of this article. :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
August 16, 200619 yr Loria has been our best owner and I would be sad to see him go. that isn't saying much when you are comparing him to wayne huizenga and john henry. i admire his desire and passion for the game, but he's a super-fan ala dan snyder/george steinbrenner...without the thick wallet. not a good combo. i'd like to see him sell, but i doubt he does.

August 16, 200619 yr I'm sick of Dayn Perry.. everytime he writes about the marlins at foxsports, he bashes loria about how he killed baseball in montreal.. he needs to get over it, they are in washington and in a better situation. never anything good about the team, players, etc.

The Marlins are in line to make about $30 to $35 million this year which will put them at the top of MLB in Operating Income. That's great for Loria but it sucks for the fans. Don't confuse the great job done by Beinfest and his people with anything Loria has done. I also have a problem with people like Loria who lie about their finances while looking for welfare which is what he's doing with his hand out for public money for a stadium. If a billionaire wants taxpayers to build him a stadium he should open up his books.
August 16, 200619 yr Author Boy I never thought this would get so many replys. I thought it would be poo-poo'd by a few of the Loria guys and maybe forgotten.
August 16, 200619 yr Boy I never thought this would get so many replys. I thought it would be poo-poo'd by a few of the Loria guys and maybe forgotten. Shows that there are people who can see thru the spin. Loria lucked out in 03 and did a few good things but it is obvious that he is not major league material. His big deals always had escape routes and he used them, which, in my opinion, was always the intent. He is way over his head. Statements that he is the best owner the Marlins have had, well, not much to compare to-except, until the sell off, Wayne was the best owner, as well as being financially capable. Also, a good owner delegates responsibilities to capable representatives to handle other important issues-like political relationships, lobbying, etc-Samson anyone? We may, hope, hope, hope, get a stadium, but if we still have Loria, this franchise will never had any long term stability.
August 16, 200619 yr I'm sitting here scratching my head. I never realized that this many people despise Jeffrey Loria. I think he is a fantastic owner. I am sick of people comparing 97 and 03 and talking about the two "firesales". Please stop comparing the two. The 97 team was given NO CHANCE to defend their title. NONE. The 03 team was given every reasonable opportunity to defend. They were given two years and failed. Loria gave several key figures long term deals. Loria went out and spent money for BIG TIME players: Pudge Rodriguez, Carlos Delgado...and South Florida slept. Then, when the the 05 team disappointed, he got rid of players. But look at the team now. We are competing. The talent around here is exciting. Loria has never been afraid to do what is needed to win. And honestly, Joe Girardi is overrated. I think I'd give Kranitz more credit than Girardi. But ultimately I'd give the players the credit for everything. I hope Girardi leaves. He can take his boneheaded calls and his no facial hair rules elsewhere. :banghead

Loria gave Pudge a 1 year deal and let him walk after the World Series. Derrek Lee was traded for Hee Seop Freaking Choi. Juan Encarnacion was shipped to Los Angeles. The WS team didnt have a legit chance to defend their title
August 16, 200619 yr He didn't let Pudge "walk". Pudge was aggressively pursued by the Marlins. They gave him a very fair offer. But, Boras was his agent and he signed with the Tigers for 5 years $50 Million. At the time I didn't think that was a good idea. Carl Pavano signed for 4 years, $39 Million with the Yankees. Pavano had a great 03 season, but before that he was mediocre at best. Pavano was the 5th best guy on the rotation talent wise. Not worth that contract. Marlins made the right choice. Encarnacion? Come on. I don't view him as a key ingredient to the 03 WS. Derrek Lee went on to post numbers that no one was expecting. He was a tough one to see go, but they had to make that decision. When you have a team that has a horrible stadium lease and ranks at the bottom in attendance year after year, you have to be careful about what you do. They kept the core players that weren't going to underperform their contracts. Then the year after he brings Carlos Delgado to a team that should have made the playoffs. I call that giving them a chance to defend.
