In May, the Cardinals overpowered the Marlins in three games, sweeping the series in convincing fashion.

Back then, St. Louis outscored Florida, 23-9.

 

A more mature and confident squad heads to St. Louis for a three-game set beginning Tuesday night at the new Busch Stadium.

 

The Marlins are riding high, having won eight straight. A win on Tuesday would match the franchise record of nine in a row, which has been done three times before. The last time Florida logged nine straight was from June 10-20.

 

The other two nine-game win streaks were: Aug. 27-Sept. 8, 2004 and May 6-14, 1996.

 

Florida's winning streak currently is the longest in the Major Leagues.

 

Now firmly in Wild Card contention, the Marlins are two-games under .500 for the first time since they were 1-3. It's been a rapid rise in the standings for the Marlins, who at one stretch were 11-31.

 

Florida sends rookie Scott Olsen to the mound. The Cardinals counter with lefty veteran Mark Mulder.

FLA: LHP Scott Olsen (10-7, 4.42)

Olsen became the Marlins' third rookie to win 10 or more games with a win in his last start, giving the club the first trio of rookies with double-digit victories since the 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers. In beating Washington his last time out, Olsen snapped a three-game losing streak, and picked up his first win since July 27. He gave up three runs (two earned) in six innings. Olsen has 129 strikeouts in 134 1/3 innings.

 

 

 

STL: LHP Mark Mulder (6-6, 6.77)

Mulder's first start since coming off the disabled list looked a lot like the games he was pitching before he was hurt. He was victimized by three multiple-run innings. For Mulder to be at his best, he needs to be able to get ground balls and double plays when he gets in trouble. He didn't do that in New York, and he didn't do it before he was placed on the shelf.

 

Players to watch

All-Star second baseman Dan Uggla became the Marlins' second player to reach 20 home runs on the season. The rookie connected on No. 20 in the eighth inning on Monday night. Miguel Cabrera has 23.

 

Preston Wilson. The Cards' new outfielder has seen a string of recent starts against left-handed pitching and could earn another one against Olsen. Wilson is 1-for-3 with a double against Olsen in his career.

Yea he went 1/4 with a run and SB leading off last game.. Cardinals struggle against lefties and we made a switch the last game against Walrond (I believe) with Wilson leading off and it worked (sorta) so we'll try it again!
