Marlins in market for a center fielder

Featured Replies

I feel like i'm in a time warp. :banghead That said, I still want Dave Roberts. He's old, but he's fast, plays a mean CF, hitting over .300, doesn't have a ridiculous contract. If I ever see Jeremy Hermierda in CF i'll be very very upset.

Does anyone know about this guy? Brent Clevlen

just got sent back down to AA.

found this in an article from 2003, back when he was in Single-A. "Outfielder Brent Clevlen got stronger every month, and by season's end was performing very well; he's got power, a little speed, and takes an occasional walk."

i wouldn't mind getting him, but i think it'd be in our best to get more of a veteran.

See, I want to get someone who is our future. We dont need to rent a guy for a month. Maybe we can look into him... Thoughts?

Tigers optioned outfielder Brent Clevlen to Double-A Erie.

Clevlen will be back in September, but it looks like the the Tigers have decided Alexis Gomez is a better choice as a fifth outfielder. Clevlen was 11-for-29 with three homers in four weeks for the Tigers.

So they pretty much dont need him.

I cant see 90% of the players that have been mentioned passing through waivers to us.

What is the chances of Soriano passing through waivers to us in the middle of the WC teams? Someone would block us, braves, houston, etc.

Houston claimed Soriano, he did not clear.

i don't think we need to get someone who is our future, we just need to avoid giving up our future. if an inexpensive hired gun can up our chances of making the postseason, we should get one. i'm psyched to see what beinfest will come up with here.

If that's the case he can't put on waivers again this season.

I wouldn't mind having JP back; however, Baldelli *sighs*, would just be amazing to get him. I've always wanted the guy to play in teal; he has power, speed, bats for average, and he is a really good defensive CF. We have pitching that we can spare, so what are we waiting for? Lets get it done! Please devils, trade him, please?

Holly, I dont think you quite understand the waivers situation. You are not going to get anyone who is young, with power and speed who can play any position. Brent Clevlen is a flash in the pan guy anyway. He was hitting .225 in AAA this year. The young and talented guys wont pass Kansas City on waivers, let alone reach us.

The fact is that we missed the ginormous boat known as Preston Wilson.

Unfortunately half the people in this thread don't understand the concept of 'waivers'. We need that teaching aid once again.

Don't just list random CF that you like. They have to either have a huge salary or not be worth the risk to add to the 25 for other teams.

So unless there is some secret agreement between all the teams with worse records than the fish, stop talking about Gary Mathews or Alfonso Soriano or anyone who would 'not' clear waivers.

I would LOVE to try to get Cory Sullivan. Speedy OF from Colorado who btw hits .300 on the road and isnt starting and have a young OF so he could very well be had.

What about Jason Michaels? Doing pretty well for the Indians and well they dont really need him with Sizemore, Blake and Choo.

Michaels wouldn't clear all the way to us. Cory maybe

And then you guys have to think about who we would trade for said CF? If it's just about anyone on our pitching staff, none would clear simply because of their age and/or production (maybe Moehler :D )

You are right. I dont know much about waivers. I was pretty much just naming names on the CF list. Just boredom.

Quick breakdown:

When a player is placed on waivers, he can be 'claimed' by any team. However, the order of 'claim' goes from worst record to best. Once a player is claimed by a team, the waiving team has X amount of time to either keep that player or trade him (it's like 48 or 72 hours I think).

Generally, players with huge contracts can pass through waivers without issue (see Livan, Javy, etc...Walker in recent years). Or a player that nobody wants on their 25 man roster (which kinda defeats the purpose...unless you see something in that players that nobody else does (Borch, Ross, etc)).

That's why it's really hard to find a player to fill a position of need. A lot of circumstances. And even when you do claim a player, that team can just retract the waiver and keep him for themselves.

I may have butchered part of the description, but I think it's pretty right on.

One added thing to JC's post - after July 31st, once a player is put on waivers and pulled off (Jones, Soriano, etc.) they can't be put through waivers again for the rest of the season.

Yes they can.

It's just the claiming team wins the claim compensation free, so it rarely, if ever, happens a second time with guys who will get claimed like Soriano and Jones.

...okay let me rephrase - once a player is put on waivers, clears waivers and then is withdrawn, he can't be put on waivers again.

I wonder how it works...

cloudy, dream sequence

Bobby Cox: "Hello?"

Automated message: "Will you accept message from (insert voice) Andruw Jones?"

Bobby Cox: "Yes"

Andruw Jones: "Hey coach, I been claimed."

Automated message interrupts..."To retract waiver, press '1'. To accept claim, press '2'. To trade player, press '3'. To speak with claiming team, press '4'. For further assistance, press '0' and hold for the next available commissioner."

I want JP! I want JP!

I thought you wanted to win the Wild Card?

:plain

we've been playing with a crappier equivalent in Alfredo Amezaga out in CF, how would this hurt the team?

then again, you probably believe the Fish still dont have a shot at this thing

What would people think about Jason Michaels? He seems like the logical solution for us. His playing time is gone with Sizemore, Choo and now blake being back and he probably isnt in the longterm for them, as he's 30 years old... and as we've seen, Cleveland isn't afraid to pull the trigger.

He obviously isn't in the longterm for us but could provide a pretty decent stopgap until we find our longterm answer.

He has a little pop, some decent speed and a good arm.. and from what I've read, goes balls out all the time.... Not to mention he is a local kid.

I think he'd be better than what we have for sure. However, I'm not sure that he would clear waivers to us.

Is that message in spanish or english? :D

I would have opposed an earlier move to trade prospects for marginal improvement to this year's club, but now when we're so close, make the move if you can.

Here's the way I see things:

I like many of the players mentioned in this thread (Michaels, Payton) but I don't think that the current CF situation is THAT bad (how much of an upgrade would Michaels actually be over Ross, Hermida, or Amezaga?).

Now while I think that still might be worth bringing in someone else, the biggest hole on the team right now that could potentially kill the Marlins down the stretch is the BULLPEN. The only reliever I have ANY confidence in right now is Tank (I'm not a Borowski fan).

So while time is running out I think the Marlins should be concentrating their efforts elsewhere.

Yeah, because he has pitched so poorly?? Aren't you the same PENGUINO that put a fork in this team about three or four weeks ago? LOL.. Sorry, had to bust your chops a little bit.
