October 2, 200619 yr How about this line-up all the 2006 regulars with the exception of CF, why not give Jason Vargas a shot, he's shown he can hit MLB pitching. Just kidding I like the make-up of the team but a real CF is needed.
October 2, 200619 yr Worse is worse. Saying that Hermida's strikeout rate isn't "that much" worse is silly. It's worse, as in the opposite of better. If you're expecting Hermida to have a 457 OBP just let me know when Eric Reed starts batting 300 at the ML level too, cause that's what he was doing this year in AAA. But that doesn't matter. It's as relevant as Sanchez's 3-6 record in AA. I do find it suprising that you're so confident that Uggla will never hit 30 but that Hermida, with 5 whole HRs, will. I would think we'd all have learned after this season. I would also think the myth of him walking so much would be done after this year too. Hermida is too patient, and he likes to sit and stare at pitches going by. 33 BB vs 70 SO. Sure, plenty others walk less, but I'd rather the ball be hit than a guy take a walk with the leadoff man on third. Then you question Uggla's ability to maintain a 270 avg...he did 282 this season vs Hermida's 251. Minor League is not Major League, and if you expect Hermida to suddenly set the world on fire you'll be setting yourself up for dissapointment. Again. I never said Hermida would produce a .457 OBP at the big league level. It was an analysis that easily suggests Hermida will out OBP Uggla in future seasons thus making him a better top of the order hitter. The thing you aren't getting is Hermida is 22, Uggla is 26. Hermida is growing into the player he will become and will become more aggressive as he ages and is not overwhelmed by a huge competition jump which Uggla was better suited for due to his longer professional career. Uggla "is who he is" at this point. Nothing against Dan, but he had arguably the most unanticipated season of the last 50 years for his position. To expect him to keep up his blistering rate of 2006, let alone GROW, on top of that in future seasons (meaning 30-35 HR) is a little to much to ask. You can say the same for Willingham and Jacobs. Consistency from their 2006 seasons next year would be a great success in their development as MLB players. Hermida will out OPS Uggla in 2007. I have no doubts about it. That's not setting the world on fire. I expect the yearly .900+ OPS seasons to start around age 25/26. Go look at Brian Giles career path. He fits the profile exactly.
October 2, 200619 yr Don't get your hopes up people. There's a reason this team was the way it was at the beginning of the season. The fact that they got good was great, but not expected. Loria had no intention of fielding a winning team at the beginnig of the season. What's changed? why will he suddenly pick up a bullpen or a centerfielder? he won't. I love the Marlins and don't want to be a pessimist, but I won't be holding my breath during the Free Agency period.
October 3, 200619 yr ima go with.... SS Hanley 2b Uggla CF---------- 3b Miggy 1b Jacobs LF hammer RF Hermida C Olivo P------------ i think the marlins really need to get a evryday center fielder... i think they should try and work a deal with tampa... maybe give reggie and vargas and maybe some other prospects to try to get carl crawford to play center... he will fill in the line up perfect keep cody ross as back up outfielder... and amezaga back up infield.... get rid of borchard and helms.... sign jason wood for bench he's proven to be a good bat off the bench and his salary wont be high and he can play several infield positions... going to need a 8th inning guy.. get some one ona 1 year contract till kensing comes back... im sure hermida will be good by then to play right... or if not... trade him instead of reggie and get reggie to play right field..... starters seems good get rid of moehler... keep mitre in the pen for starts that the starter gets out early and for emergency starts....
October 3, 200619 yr These are the guys who need to be back. Dan Uggla Hanley Ramirez Miguel Cabrera Josh Willingham Jeremy Hermida Miguel Olivo (if for only there are no 'better' options out there) Wes Helms Alfredo Amezaga (only as a utility player) I wouldnt mind seeing Jake back, he needs to do some major refining, but I still think he can be quite productive in this league for us. Pitchers: Dontrelle Willis Scott Olsen Josh Johnson Anibal Sanchez Taylor Tankersley The other guys I think you could see moved in the right deal or just not re-signed from the pitching staff, though I'd be more inclined to hold onto Pinto over Nolasco.
October 3, 200619 yr maybe give reggie and vargas and maybe some other prospects to try to get carl crawford to play center... oh, ok. Hanley Uggla Jake Cabs Willy Ross Olivo Hermida ---

I love the Marlins and don't want to be a pessimist, but I won't be holding my breath during the Free Agency period. 1. Reed and Abercrombie were starting almost exclusively. 2. Girardi got his way and Olivo wasn't the starting catcher. Treanor was getting almost an equal number of starts. 3. Girardi got his way and Johnson/Nolasco weren't in the starting rotation. 4. Sanchez joined the team in June. 5. There really wasn't any good CF/bullpen talent to pick up that was worth jeopardizing the future. 6. Young players need to adjust to the major leagues. 7. The team always had talent to begin with. Its funny how virtually every team that made the postseason acquired talent to better their ballclub at the deadline except the FLORIDA MARLINS. Your #5 smells like cat droppings. And your #2 is equally comical. How was Girardi to know that Olivo would have an above average season at the plate? He probably saw just how hard a time Olivo has just CATCHING the baseball and he may have figured that Treanors superiority in that category offset Olivo's arm.

If we spend $2 million on a scrub like Olivo then the FO really is insane. He didnt all of a sudden become a good hitter. He struck out over 10 times as much as he walked and swings at the first pitch in like 99% of his at bats. He had a lucky year. He will settle back into his normal garbage self next year. And he still plays some of the worst defense at the C position in the big leagues. $2 million for Olivo would be the worst offseason transaction in baseball. Trade for a rookie.

October 3, 200619 yr Dont really want Kevin Millar. Just a soft spot for people who started their careers with the Fish, kind of like Kotsay. And I dont get how $2 million for a catcher whos barely good enough to be a backup is a good value. Olivo is not a good baseball player. From behind the plate or at it. As I said, we give this scrub $2 million and he returns to his career of being woefully below average, which is 99% likely to happen, it will come back and bite us in the arse.

October 3, 200619 yr A rookie. I dont care who. Miguel Olivo is not and never will be worth $2 million.

October 3, 200619 yr I've said why I dont like him. He plays bad defense. He showed more evidence that this was a fluke season than a turnaround(swinging at the first pitch+striking out over 10X as much as he walked). Most teams, even young cheap teams like ours, dont take journeymen that are barely good enough to be backups, give them a big raise even after a career year, and ignore the fact that they still had a barely average season at the plate and play horrible defense.

WHO SHOULD WE REPLACE HIM WITH!?!?!
October 3, 200619 yr it was obviously his career year and there's no way he could possibly surpass that... i mean, he IS already 28 years old. damn. he should just retire.
October 3, 200619 yr show me andruw jones...torri hunter...or in the category of the real...jeremy reed, adam stern, chris young...at the very least...keep ross...he has good power and if he can get his average a bit...id be content with that...ad for the bullpen...i personally think anyone's guess is as good as mine...no foulke, no dotel...thats all i ask...and god forbid bringing herges or messenger back...also...just throwing out the idea...give hanley a look in centerfield during some winter league games...if he could settle in at center, we could stick with andino and or get a free agent short stop...either way...07 should be a fun year indeed
October 3, 200619 yr godfather, you have Willy twice Woops, thanks. My 8 spot is supposed to be Olivo.
October 3, 200619 yr godfather, you have Willy twice Woops, thanks. My 8 spot is supposed to be Olivo. no, you didnt have to change it Willy is that good he can play both spots at once and hit twice :thumbup
October 3, 200619 yr untill some one better is available i'd stick to olivo...treanor is good catchin... so is olivo... all tho the defense wasnt fully there.. he improved alot since the begning of the season.... which makes it ridiculous that evryones saying that he's going to go back to being horrible.... its not like he did it for a week or a month... and he and treanor had one of the higher throwing out percentages in the NL.... i was dissapointed not to see paul hoover get in barely any play only gettin about 10 at bats. woulda been nice to see what a prospect could do in the majors...as for olivo... i think he did great... and yes... he swung at 99.9% of first pitches... but hey... he hit most of them....lol thats a big thing i disliked about the way joe managed the team always giving the red light to swing away at first pitch.... in september, the first pitch strike was pretty much the only hit-able pitch the young marlins were getting.... the rest were always low and outside and of course... they would swing at it... then the one mistake the pitcher would do and leave it over the plate they would be able to get the bat on it... but the phillies sucess on the marlins offense had alot to do with pitching them all low and outside.... and no one was able to adjust but wes helms and miggy taking the balls to opposit field...
