Florida Marlins Bullpen Thread.....

Featured Replies

hmmmm.....i see no mention of Adam Bostick here.....intresing...could make for a good lefty out of the pen....let see what Spring Training brings...

We cut Nate Bump.

Am I the only one that thinks this was a horrible move?

Probably.

How about the Marlins try getting one of these relieveres...

Octavio Dotel (Could be a great closer. You know how we do with ex-closers gone bad)

Latroy Hawkins (same here)

Justin Speier (Could be too expensive)

Ray King (We nee another lefty. Tan can't do it every night)

Brian Meadows (Why not give him a shot)

No.

Messenger will be in our bullpen, Jose Garcia will not if anything he will go to Carolina. Petit might go to triple A. Lets see what he shows in ST. I believe Resop will earn a spot, I am very much rooting on Harvey Garcia as a setup guy. Pinto has anchored a spot in the bullpen already. A name everyone is ignoring that has a very good chance of earning a bullpen spot is Scott Tyler

Taylor Tankersley LHP

Randy Messenger RHP

Reynel Pinto LHP

Chris Resop RHP

Harvey Garcia RHP

Scott Tyler RHP

other names to throw in the mix...

Yusmeiro Petit RHP

Sergio Mitre RHP

Daniel Barone RHP

Rick Vanden Hurk RHP (watch this kid closely)

why in the hell would jose garcia "if anything" go back to AA?

I believe they would want Jose Garcia starting as much as possible.

He didn't get much of a chance in his brief callup... did he? That is why i see him back in Carolina where he left off. It appears the Marlins may want him to get a little more seasoning. He isn't MLB ready yet

Dotel and Speier sounds good. King, maybe, if he's cheap.

See I don't care what's good for Joe Borowski. I care what's good for the Marlins and in my opinion his services weren't that valuable.

OK, how many closers did better in 06 that were in the same price range?

That means nothing to me because I think a prospect making the league minimum could have done the job Borowski did. It is ridiculous how overpaid the ninth inning guy is.

Maybe you should be the GM then, so you can find that prospect.

They were already on the roster last year. The ninth inning role is easier. A Resop, Petit, or Pinto surely could have done that job Borowski did.

I highly doubt Resop, Petit or Pinto would have done that job with as much success as Borowski. That's not to say Borowski had a perfect year, by any means, though.

Uhh those are good suggestions....where's yours before your so quick to shoot others down?

Borowski did not have an admirable year besides the SAVE statistic, which is fairly meaningless and not as difficult to attain as you might think. Pinto easily could have matched Borowski. Resop most likely. Petit is a tad bit of a stretch. Borowski comes into the game with no runners on base and his ERA is unexcusably high for a closer.

Pinto's overall season stats blow away Girardi's. Resop's come damn close. Petit's are above but I feel the ability is there if given enough time to develop into the role.

If you ignore the SAVE statistic entirely, and consider his role, Borowski was not a good pitcher, even compared to the other closers in baseball. That's why I want to see the Marlins give the job to someone like Resop instead of overpaying for some veteran pitcher that will ostensibly revitalize a shotty career.

Wow, what gives you the authority to shoot down such reasonable suggestions? People are asking for Gagne and you shoot down those names? :lol

I'd much rather spend a little extra dough for Gagne than get the bottom of the barrel, if you know what I mean.

Dodgers decline option for Gagne.

Gagne in teal, i would love that. He can be reborn here like others

that would be so awesome if we could get gagne back to original form...*listens to his entrance song "Game Over"*

From Marlins mailbag:

With Joe Borowski filing for free agency and what has happened in the last three years with Armando Benitez, Todd Jones and now Borowski, what struggling reliever is available that can come and join the Marlins and be successful?

-- Jorge Z., Miami

The two most asked questions are about the Marlins' center-field options and the closer role. The team certainly has captured lightning in a bottle the past three years, finding veterans with something to prove. Perhaps this year the team will take a different approach and go for a big splash. One scenario that probably should be explored is Brad Lidge. While he struggled at times this past season, the Astros right-hander is a tremendous talent. If the Marlins get creative, packaging perhaps a young starter, maybe they can land Lidge. It's probably a long shot, but it would be worth exploring at the upcoming general managers meetings in Naples, Fla., from Nov. 13-16.

Maybe toss in a young pitching prospect, 2 other prospects for Lidge and Tavarez? Thoughts? Yes, No, Maybe So?

I'd rather Armando Benitez for free over Lidge.

The only thing worse than a bad elbow for a closer is a bad head...Lidge is finished as "dominant."

NO Dice! sorry I like Lidge but I don't think we give up starting pitching for him unless they would take Petit or Mitre

:|

I'd take it. Lidge seems to fit the profile, and I'm not sure Benitez would be able to bring it back again.

If we can get Lidge and Taveras without breaking up the rotation or trading any starting position players, I'd definately go for it. Wouldn't give Tank though, and I'd prefer to not give Pinto. I know how I sound...I get to attached to the talent.

If some of you guys were GM for even a week...everyone else would hangup as soon as they saw: "...Florida Marlins calling...." You just have no clue on the value players have.

Petit, Mitre, & Vargas for Lidge, Taveras, and maybe a bullpen arm (I have no idea who else the Stros have)?

Wouldn't we get arrested for swindling?
