November 1, 200619 yr I saw today that the Brewers announced Dan Kolb has filed for free agency. He seems to fit the bill as another ex-closer looking to revive his career. What do you guys think his value will be on the free agent market? Do you think he's still too valuable as a reliever, and as a result will cost too much?
November 1, 200619 yr could be a guy... Id love to go after Gagne In all seriousness, it won't matter who we put back there as long as they have had prior success as a closer. Being a closer in Florida is like being a running back in Denver, everyone has success.
November 1, 200619 yr Kolb seems like the kind of closeer that usually ends up as a closer for the Marlins. He could be an option if the price is right, but honestly, I'll trust whatever the organization decides to do with the closer slot, they always seem to find the right guy.
November 1, 200619 yr I agree with Ramp and would love to see Gagne here, but I dunno if that can happen money-wise....
November 1, 200619 yr I'd loove to get Foulke or Dotel. Hopefully they won't commnand too much money. What's the speed on Gagne's fastball after the TJ surgery? will he be the same?
November 1, 200619 yr I like the idea of Gagne but whats his deal? I know he's been hurt and in rehab when is he expected to be fully healthy? I also like the idea of Dotel but I have a fealing the Yankees might resign him to take over for Mo when he retires. Anyone know around how much these guys would cost?
November 1, 200619 yr Considering the injuries and rumors about performance enhancement in regards to Gagne, I don't believe he would cost that much. Then again, some silly team could offer him $4mil and steal him.

Foulke has a player option worth $3.75 that is more then he'd probably get in Free Agency. I think he'd be a great closing candidate (he did have a very sneaky 1.19 whip despite the inflated ERA) if he were a free agent, but I doubt he walks away from that next year. Dustin Hermanson is the best low cost/incentive name I see on the scrap heap. Wood and Gagne will get good deals to be RP from someone.
November 1, 200619 yr Foulke, dotel are two guys needing a starting over down here perhaps I was going to say Dotel..good choice. Any of these guys depending on their asking price and willingness to sign are good gambles: Gagne, Dotel, Foulke, Kolb, and a few others. There's been talk in the papers about bringing Benitez back through trade. Sounds good to me. oh yeah, I saw the WSox declined his option.
November 1, 200619 yr I think Kolb is gonna be our most logical choice here, I think some team would outbid us for Gagne.

All I said was it could happen
November 1, 200619 yr Borowski had more saves this year than any previous, after 2 really bad injury filled seasons. What else would it take to qualify as a "rebirth" comparable to Jones and Benitez? Yes, Borowski is not as good as either of those 2 in general, but relative to his abilities, I don't think you caould ask for more. I still am amazed at this resurrected closer phenomenon here though...like maybe it's the weather or something that helps these guys' arms. Cause really, the same thing has happened the last 3 seasons and all with different pitching coaches (Rosey, Wiley, & Kranitz).
November 1, 200619 yr Closers are dealing with such small sample sizes that the difference between a good one and a mediocre one is only a couple of runs a year. You do not want your best pitcher in the bullpen to be your closer, as simple as that. Most "save situations" have something like a 70% chance of succeeding regardless of who is out there, so it's best to keep your best pitchers for close and late games when you need them. This whole "rebirth" thing is a joke. Closers for the most part are not consistent, so there's a good chance they just happened to have good years.

November 1, 200619 yr See I don't care what's good for Joe Borowski. I care what's good for the Marlins and in my opinion his services weren't that valuable. OK, how many closers did better in 06 that were in the same price range?

November 1, 200619 yr It's gotta be a vet that's been downright terrible lately, has been booed everywhere he goes, OR makes people bite their nails like there's no tomorrow like Looper, Urbina, Benitez, Jones, and Borowski were. Let's go for Brian Fuentes or Keith Foulke.

November 2, 200619 yr I wouldn't say Borowski was reborn. I wasn't pleased with his performance much at all. Neither was I. We can do better than Borowski and he was far from "reborn".
