January 17, 200719 yr I like Shannon and all,but it seems as if he's not the same as he was before. He is older, and his knees are weaker. He hasn't played Center these last couple years, and i doubt he can contribute to us in CF.Dolphin Stadium has alot of ground to cover in CF i don't see Shannon covering it.I rather use the Money up on a pitcher. Another Option would be signing Stewart for the right price sticking him in LF,moving the Hammer to first;and trading Big Jake and Nolasco for a legit CF.But i don't see none of this happening.
January 18, 200719 yr I don't get it! Many of you despite all his injuries ABSOLUTELY LOVED Cliff Floyd, same issue here, did any of you forget that Shannon Stewart knows how to get on base? If healthy this guys can pay us major dividends. SIDE NOTE: Nobody says he's going to fill the centerfield spot, he can move to left allowing us to deal Jacobs for an arm in the bullpen or even a centerfielder who is less proven but with upside, and can sure move Josh Willingham to 1st base where he'll explode offensively. I like this guy, I am super high on him! We need to do it. 32 is NOT OLD!
January 18, 200719 yr Here's an Update: The Orioles continue to look at free agent Shannon Stewart and could sign the 32-year-old to an incentive-laden deal. Stewart would be brought in to act as a fourth outfielder and occasional DH, but if healthy, he could be more productive than Jay Payton, earning him additional outfield time. The concern is that his foot problems will never completely disappear

The concern is that his foot problems will never completely disappear If he's being signed to an incentive deal and he's being looked at to be a 4th outfielder, why would he go there? You obviously can't reach your incentives as a fourth outfielder, unless they are very mild standards... Anyway, I honestly am ALL for this on an incentive-laden deal. You cannot ignore what he has done in this league, and he is exactly the player we need to slide right in the 2-hole.
January 18, 200719 yr I've been calling for Jacobs to be dealt all season for a CF. There is probably no chance that will happen this year, but if it did Stewart would be a pretty worthy replacement in LF. That'd be a brilliant move...trade Jacobs/Nolasco/Petit, get a CF and/or bullpen help and put Stewart out in LF. That would be ideal (the latter), though I'd take Petit out of the equation. But like you said, not likely to happen at this point. Tampa Bay or Pittsburgh were the most likely places we coul deal Jacobs. Pittsburgh got LaRoche tonight and Tampa Bay has proven to be, as ever, too obstinate to deal with. As for Stewart, I wouldn't call him a worthy replacement in LF. Could pan out, or could be a bust. At this point, probably worth a shot and the price would be right. But pointless with Jacobs and Willingham firmly stuck at 1B and LF to go along with Ross and Borchard.
January 18, 200719 yr As for all three, acquiring Stewart, moving Nolasco and Jacobs, be careful what you wish for... :jester
January 18, 200719 yr As for all three, acquiring Stewart, moving Nolasco and Jacobs, be careful what you wish for... :jester That is a pretty cryptic comment. Maybe you have an inside line? Regardless, something has to be done to improve the CF and bullpen situation and if we can keep Dontrelle, Johnson, Olsen and Anibal and deal Jacobs/Nolasco plus prospects to do it then I am all for it.

You're reading more than is there. Simply commenting there's too little upside with a whole lot of possible downside on so many levels. Lose another starter, you're now down to three bonafide starters, Stewart doesn't work out, you're looking at either a new 1st baseman and Willingham in left or you have to find another leftfielder and other GMs know you're desperate. I don't think anyone really expects Jason Stokes to come charging into camp and win a job as much as we'd all like to see him finally make something of his career. This rush to make all these moves before we even get to spring training is, I think, about boredom as much as anything and on one level I'm not sure people aren't just saying things or reacting to the newest player/rumor du jour for lack of anything else to talk about. My guess is, me included, a month or two from now a whole lot of us will look back on these January comments and say to ourselves, "what was I thinking?". There's alot of teams going into spring training with with bigger question marks than us, and with much bigger problems to confront. We may have our share but they aren't insurmountable. Even putting Tampa aside, you look at Seattle or Texas or Baltimore or Washington and certainly others, and they know they are already toast in 2007. We have a terrific young team. On the whole I think the core of which ought to be kept together for at least another year. Personally, I want to see what a healthy Mike Jacobs can do. Ditto Ricky. Some of the others, Ross and Borchard, Messenger, Mitre, love'em but they are interchangeable parts, if they make the it will be because they earned it and that's a good thing. It isn't as if this team won't have competition to make the the 25 man roster. And I still believe if we're patient enough we'll a few more players join us before we break camp for Washington DC. So That's why I said what I said...
January 18, 200719 yr I don't know about Nolasco but Jacobs isn't going anywhere. He will be our first baseman this year. Beinfest loves his potential
January 18, 200719 yr I like Jacobs but if we have Willingham playing first and we sign Shannon, we need to rid of him for the best of the team.
January 18, 200719 yr I really dont understand how any Marlins fan can have the audacity to say that Nolasco would not be missed to "any degree". He's a young pitcher who showed both potential greatness (within 5-6 outs of a no-hitter) and signs of immaturity (putting his team in a hole early in a few games). Lately I find myself reading the Marlins forum for laughs, not insight.
January 18, 200719 yr Don his ceiling simply isnt all that high. Of course he has value because he's cheap, could still breakout (chances miniscule), and provides #4/5 SP innings. If he gets us a young CF with potential I wouldnt shed a tear...
January 18, 200719 yr The team will be better with Willingham at 1st, Garcia in the rotation, and an outfield of Stewart/Hermida/good centerfielder than it is in it's current form, that's almost indisputable. Now, whether or not Jacobs and Nolasco gets us a good centerfielder is a different story.

With the right replacement (Stewart) we can now pursue a centerfielder with Jacobs and Nolasco as center pieces at full throttle! It can be done.
January 18, 200719 yr give him a minor league deal and a ST invite, and see what develops. But I'd rather not make any major roster moves on the basis of it.
January 18, 200719 yr Call me crazy but I think both Nolasco and Jacobs will have a great season, maybe even better than some of the studs like Ramires and Olson. Also, I really don't understand how a centerfielder would instantly make us any better, that position didn't hurt us as much as the bullpen did last year. I say use Petit and another good minor league arm to land us a centerfielder, or hell, more bullpen help.
January 18, 200719 yr My friend any position that is slotted in the middle of the diamond such as Centerfield, catcher, and SS is essential to any baseball teams success. It's considered to be the MOST important holes.

January 19, 200719 yr Somebdy better make a run to Walgreens for a giant economy bottle of aspirin because you're going to need it when this silliness is seen as just that. Spring training is going to be long and painful for the naysayers. What's funny is the guys who are so down on Nolasco now are the same one who jumped on his bandwagon last season when he was making fools of the NL with that curveball of his. The game threads have a way of being very revealing sometimes... :brigginbounce
January 19, 200719 yr People are mistaking "being down" on Nolasco with "recognizing his value/ceiling." I'm not saying it's impossible he eclipses being a solid #4, but it's highly unlikely. There are quite a few pitchers in his situation, having one very good pitch and 2 averagish ones, with the possibility that one of those eventually grades to way above average. It just doesnt happen all that often. So, am I being understood now?

And btw I was referring more to the "let's break up the team so we can get Shannon Stewart in left" crowd than your comments.
