Posted February 28, 200718 yr Ms Could Trade Reed, Broussard The Seattle Post-Intelligencer's John Hickey reports that fringe players Jeremy Reed and Ben Broussard stand a decent chance of being dealt this spring. With Ichiro in center and Vidro at DH, one or both may be expendable. Reed remains a valuable commodity, a perfect guy for a team like the Marlins to acquire at fifty cents on the dollar. He enters his age 26 season having survived a trade from the White Sox, a partially torn wrist ligament, Red Sox trade rumors, a serious wrist sprain, and a broken thumb. The Fielding Bible called him "an up-and-coming elite center fielder" a year ago, but he's without a starting gig now. Can Reed bounce back from an awful .217/.260/.377 line? Baseball Prospectus has him at .267/.333/.399 for '07; ZiPS calls for .262/.335/.393. We have a consensus. The average AL CF hit .275/.334/.437 last year; it was .264/.335/.418 in the NL. There's reason to believe Reed could provide league average offense and excellent defense for a good price for some team in '07. Broussard is a 30 year-old 1B/DH. He's been used as a platoon guy, but doesn't really have the splits to back that up. As a $3.55MM bench player, he doesn't have much use for the Mariners. On the plus side, he is a talented beat-boxer. please do it regardless of what Sanchez does. Eric Reedish defense with a whole lot more offensive upside. mlbtraderumors.com
February 28, 200718 yr I would love to do it, but as always, it depends on the cost. If they are going to be like TB and start asking for Olsen, then no.
February 28, 200718 yr Id rather see a Ross/Borchard platoon, but we know that ain't happening. man, Reed's star has dimmed over the past few years, eh?
February 28, 200718 yr The way pitchers are falling right now I'm not sure about a trade. Definetly not anyone expected to make the team. And it would depend on what they would want from our minor league system. Interesting thought but I want to see how Tank and JJ mend and give us another week or 2 before we start talking any pitchers in return. As much as Beinfest preaches pitching then my guess would be he is thinking along the same lines.
February 28, 200718 yr perfect fit and on the cheap still. it aint oging to happen, even if it all it costs is a couple of minor leaguers :confused
March 1, 200718 yr I would love to do it, but as always, it depends on the cost. If they are going to be like TB and start asking for Olsen, then no. this shouldn't cost anywhere near as much.
March 1, 200718 yr I really can't see the mariners trading him at all, and if they do, it won't be cheap. Doesn't Ichiro become a free agent next year? I also thought I heard Ichiro quoted as saying he would re-sign with the M's, but only if they "showed that they could win some games this season." I wouldn't be in a big hurry to trade off my backup CF, while my starting CF is shooting off quotes like that. Especially with the Mariners' track record over the past few seasons.

Ichiro leaving would coincide with super-prospect, CF Adam Jones, filling in nicely. Hopefully, Bavasi pulls the trigger on a Reed deal with us...he's one of the worst GMs in baseball.

Offer them some type of mid level pitching prospect and we should be good to go. Reed's value is way way down these days.
March 1, 200718 yr god i wish we could just get him and get a closer and have no reason to have any excuses.
March 1, 200718 yr The Mariners are desperate for bullpen help, and will continue to be so as their pen is aging rapidly. I say we send Lindstrom and/or Scott Tyler for Reed, even if he ends up as a back-up, because even with Reed, we have NO ONE who is consistent for CF. I know a lot of people are high on Sanchez or a Ross/Borchard platoon, or if Reggie pans out... but even at their best, they will not be consistently good enough, and most likely Jeremy Reed will not be either, but it's worth it, even if he is streaky. We need to start building our OF quality. We also need to start worrying about 2B... watch out for a rapid and ugly Uggla decline this year. The 06 magic is over on him.
March 1, 200718 yr We also need to start worrying about 2B... already got that guy in the minors :thumbup
March 1, 200718 yr We also need to start worrying about 2B... already got that guy in the minors :thumbup Who Psomas? Coghlan (considering he could move from 3rd, which he probably can? I'm probably missing someone. Who do you see coming up in our infiled Ramp?

March 2, 200718 yr Id rather see a Ross/Borchard platoon, but we know that ain't happening. man, Reed's star has dimmed over the past few years, eh? yep from Ba's number 2 prospect at one point He is the only reason I fear about hermida sometimes. But our jeremy is much younger and hopefully better But Jeremy Reed does have a great glove and arm and can cover good ground. He will hit for not much normally but he still has some potential. Sure we cant convince them to give us Adam Jones instead?

I'm probably missing someone. Who do you see coming up in our infiled Ramp? I was talking about Coghlan I like Coghlan. I really loved Uggla's power last season for a 2B, and I think I am a little spoiled because of that, since Coghlan has the power of Eric Reed's 4 year old son, but his BB:K ratio is incredible, which leads to his good averages and fantastic OPS for a minor league rookie. I believe he will play through Greensboro and Jupiter this year and start in Carolina for 08' finding his way to the Big Club late in the season. I just wish he could develop a little more power (he only had 5 doubles and 1 triple with no homers in his 30 games last year). There any other options out there, you're looking for? (I really respect your expertise!)

Send over Jesus Delgado and Paul Mildren for him and make it a done deal. For that pair you should be able to get a player who not only can play the position but who isn't referred to as the human "black hole" when it comes to offense. Yes, I often defer to Beinfest and company's decisions more than most here and if he acquired him so be it, but for me Reed would be a step backwards. But then again I think Jason Wood would have contributed everything Aaron Boone will in 2007.

March 2, 200718 yr I would love to do it, but as always, it depends on the cost. If they are going to be like TB and start asking for Olsen, then no. Back in december, the Mariners and A's were discussing a deal for Reed. Seattle wanted John Danks from the A's as part of the deal. (Remember Danks was one of the guys coming to the Marlins when the Marlins were thinking of trading Lowell and Beckett to Texas). Seattle definately falls in the "ask for too much" category.
