June 6, 200719 yr since we have 13 pitchers our bench is really short...... shouldnt we send down a guy like miller to gain and extra outfielder or something if we still want to keep vandy up???

June 6, 200719 yr man, it seems like everyone (minus a few of course) hates pinto, he has electric stuff and i want to see him in teal as long as he has any value
June 6, 200719 yr our bench sucks even if we do get an extra player by sending down a pitcher. what do we have? matt treanor jason wood reggie abercrombie aaron boone (when jake is back) joe borchard 2 of these guys shouldnt even be playing mlb. (treanor and borchard)
June 6, 200719 yr Some of you people are amazing. Teams with limited payrolls and tons of injuries dont have strong benches. When our bench is at full with Boone, Amezaga, Ross and Borchard, we have a DAMN good bench, imo.

(treanor and borchard) you pick treanor and borchard as not being of mlb deserving...yet, wood is a career minor leaguer (and i assume for pretty good reason)...treanor has like 100 AB's in the last year and a halfand that is pretty unfair to judge him on that especially when he is soooo good defensively, borchard, while not anything even resembling good...has hit a few big homers...abercrombie is terrible(although slightly improved)...when you look around baseball...we actually have a really good bench, especially when you add ross in there
June 6, 200719 yr we actually have a really good bench, especially when you add ross in there No we don't. For a team that spends no money, it's expectedly decent, but it's not good, not by a long shot.
June 6, 200719 yr Fredo is a versatile bench player. Cody can bash off the bench and Boone is actually playing better than the injured starter he replaced and Wood has been clutch in his few chances.
June 6, 200719 yr We don't have anything that resembles a MLB bench. We have the best that no money can buy. Our payroll is a disgrace, and the bench reflects this best. Assuming our starting pitching improves, and the bullpen continues to outperform, it's our bench and lack of depth(and CF) that will catch up to us and preclude any possible playoff run.

Word. Boone has filled in quite nicely and I wouldnt whine at all if they keep it a permanent platoon or give Boone the job fulltime (I dont know what Boone's splits are).

That's like saying we've gone on a tear because Hanley's batting 3rd. Just simple common sense is all that's needed. Having some bench players contribute doesn't make it good, it's like expecting kudos as a parent for feeding your kids.

(treanor and borchard) You could make a case for Treanor being the starting catcher(granted, thats not really a compliment). Wood is what he is, most benches have a player like him. Boone will probably split time with Jacobs. Abercrombie...he is at least somewhat improved in some aspects of the game. And Borchard...well, uh. He has light tower power and is a switch hitter.
June 6, 200719 yr I really like Borchard as a bench player.. strikes out a lot but he always seems to work the count, he has lefty power (which is always nice off the bench) and he can play 3 OF positions, if needed.

June 6, 200719 yr We don't have names on the bench but it isnt a bad bench at all. Especially when you consider guys are injured. Most teams are not Atlanta and have two great young catchers, most backups are below average and Treanor at least has a great love. Alfredo is a spark plug who is great for giving guys days off, plays solid D and can get on base when he is hot. Ross is streaky but he is nice off the bench. Boone will be back on the bench and he has hit very well this year. Reggie doesnt look lost this year at least and plays solid defense. Borchard Ross Alfredo Reggie Boone Wood That's not a weak bench at all, especially when you consider that three of those guys are/should be starting. (Boone, Alfredo, Treanor) The other guys all have started and filled in decent when called upon. So maybe we don't have an amazing bench, but I wouldnt call it bad.

June 6, 200719 yr So you guys dont think, when fully healthy, we have a good bench? If the bench is used interchangeably to describe bullpen pitchers, then its fine, but if its just positional subs...then, no its a horrid bench by competitive team standards. However for the amount of money we're opting not to spend, it's fine. Look at that 2003 bench, no names, but Red was a backup who could handle the pitching staff and hit, Banks and Hollandsworth provided versatile options both in the field and at the plate and Harris could come in and get you, at the very least, an advance the runners hit. Boone excluded, our bench is devoid of any player who could be reasonably expected to contribute league average production over 40 starts if needed. Hell, its so K heavy, its not reliable in close games on an AB to AB basis. PS, I consider Amezaga not to be part of the bench because its likely he would be playing in CF now regardless of De Aza's injury.
June 6, 200719 yr all that is missing is C.Ross the rest I dont mind them being mediocre (not including boone since he is playing regularly now)
June 6, 200719 yr With a healthy team, Boone, Borchard, Ross, Treanor, and Amegeza is a fine bench. Boone can hit, Borch and Ross can hit their platoon halves, Treanor is an excellent catcher and Amezega can play all over the place.
June 7, 200719 yr Little man Ross is the man. That dude's got some power. It's too bad he got injured. Speaking of which, when will he be back?
