June 19, 200718 yr I'm debating whether or not this team is actually in a slump, or it's something else. In the past week we have only two wins, and I feel like the defense in particular is falling apart at the seems. Let's see what everyone else here thinks. Currently I'm torn.
June 19, 200718 yr nah...i think its the ol' whatever can go wrong will go wrong addage...things will pick up again and we will reel off like a 10 game winning streak
June 19, 200718 yr Defense, timley hitting, shutdown innings. Something we haven't done. You add those up within a span of games and that can create Losses.
June 19, 200718 yr Yeah, it's a slump, nothing else to call it. The next two, with Willis and Mitre, are the real keys to me.
June 19, 200718 yr im worn out right now as a fan...i love this team but i find myself losing all faith even if the opponents just have a 2-3 run lead...it wasnt always like that...the magic is just not there now... it used to be..."down by 3? haha, watch what we do now...wait till Miggy comes up...wait till Hanley gets on...wait till the ninth..." now its..."damn, down by 2...watch hanley airmail this one...watch Olivo swing at a wild pitch...watch Miggy strike out...watch Hermida take a called third strike...watch our bullpen give up 3-4 more runs just to make a comeback even less likely...watch us leave the bases loaded..." and the one I hate the most..."watch that losing team that we're facing come out of their slump..." I absolutely HATE that we cant beat the Rays, the Royals, and the White Sox...and at times the Nationals, the Brewers, and the Pirates ALL when those teams are struggling...if the Marlins go on a brief slump, lets say losing 5 of 6...if we go into New York, Atlanta, San Diego, Los Angeles...we WILL get beat handidly...but if a losing team goes on a losing streak and sees the Marlins in the upcoming schedule..."oh yay we're playing the Marlins!" and they come out of their slump...THAT kills me...it's embarrassing... How come we can't beat Buddy Carlyle, Andy Sonnanstine, Jason Stanford? But our opponents can beat Dontrelle Willis, Scott Olsen, Sergio Mitre, and Josh Johnson? I'm disappointed, I'm burned out...yes I'm still gonna watch every game...I will be there...I am a fan, I love this team for so many reasons...I still have teal in my blood...but right now my faith is on a shorter leash... ...thanks for letting me rant...now please, let's get out of this rut...
June 19, 200718 yr Author The thing that annoys me the most about this team is the inconsistent offense. In a week, our scores look somewhat like this: Monday: 8 runs Tuesday: 1 run Wednesday: 7 runs Thursday: 3 runs Friday: 10 runs Saturday: 2 runs Sunday: 6 runs

June 19, 200718 yr Or the team just isn't very good. Injuries, holes in the lineup, etc...wait until 2008. Yeah thats a good outlook if negativity is the objective. However, aside from injuries and 'holes in the lineup' such as abercrombie or olivo. The guys that are supposed to be good are struggling, such as olsen and d-train
June 19, 200718 yr If we do not start playing some half decent defense this team is never making it over .500.
June 19, 200718 yr Or the team just isn't very good. Injuries, holes in the lineup, etc...wait until 2008. As a few of us have said all year. This season is a building block year. We wouldn't be shocked to see the team make a run to the playoffs but this season is all about getting better for 2008 when we really make our run for the pennant. But OMG UR SO NEGATIVE!!11111111 GO ROOT FOR TEH M3TS!
June 19, 200718 yr They are not in a slump. They are just not that good of a baseball team. Any team that leads the NL in errors, strikeouts by batters and walks for pitchers is not a good baseball team.
June 19, 200718 yr They are not in a slump. They are just not that good of a baseball team. Any team that leads the NL in errors, strikeouts by batters and walks for pitchers is not a good baseball team. If by not that good of a baseball team means that half the team is injured then you're right. The '03 mets had a good core of players, but did nothing b/c everyone on that team got hurt. That didn;t make them a bad team, just a hard luck team. And thats the case here too. 2008 will be as bad or worse than this year if people get injured again, its just the way the game works. If this team were at least in the vicinty of full strength, then you can assess the team as a whole and say, I guess theyre not that good. But a team that has been forced to use obermueller, kim, and vanden hurk for pretty much the whole season is obviously going to have bad overall pitching numbers. We have a SS/2B playing centerfield and a former quarterback playing right for most of the early going. There's no way to tell if this team is good or bad. Now theres a lot that can be said about individuals, such as olsen or olivo. But not the team as a whole, because there has been no team. And furthermore, it adds nothing to discussion when someone says "theyre just not that good of a baseball team" because no one was syaing that while we were sweeping the cubs and taking 3 of 4 in atlanta.

I'm not one of these people posting these "the sky is falling theads" but to say that 2008 is when the Marlins are more likely to compete is a valid statement. I agree. Main problem. Fans got too spoiled from 2003 on. Time to get over the good times and start dealing with the growing pains.
June 19, 200718 yr the injuries argument really opens my eyes...things really could be worse...if JJ settles in, Scotty and Dontrelle find their grooves...Carroll comes through...Jacobs comes back strong...De Aza comes back period...who knows, we could have a strong second half... whatever, everything needs to start with the next game...go out and get 'em tonight boys!

That line's actually pretty good. We scored 6 or more runs four times. You should win those games. The other three are bad but you're supposed to lose those kinds of games. So our record should be 4-3 in that span. Instead, we're 2-5. The problem is not the offense. It's the defense and pitching.
June 19, 200718 yr Really the offense has been fine all year. Inconsistent and strikeout-prone maybe, but we were also leading the league in extra-base hits for a while. The bullpen (other than Tank being a head-scratcher) has been better than expected, minus Julio. But we really haven't gotten solid starting pitching this season other than Sergio Mitre. and the defense, which goes without saying.
June 19, 200718 yr We need D-Train to step up tonight and get ourselves a win. I would not call this a slumpbecause we have not really been over .500 this season for very long.

I think he made up those numbers but it prompted me to look at our record when we score and allow so many runs. Here it is: Runs allowed: ============= 5 or more: 8-31 4 or less: 25-7 Runs scored: ============ 5 or more: 28-8 4 or less: 5-30
June 19, 200718 yr Our D sucks right now. Plain and simple. I hope it's just a tough streak of bad luck.
