August 15, 200719 yr Former major league infielder Jose Offerman was arrested Tuesday night during an Independent League baseball game for hitting two members of the opposing team with a bat. Offerman, who plays shortstop for the Long Island Ducks, attacked Bridgeport Bluefish starting pitcher Matt Beech in the second inning, delaying the game 17 minutes. Bridgeport Police confirmed to PA SportsTicker that Offerman was arrested and released later Tuesday night after posting bond. Offerman, who had homered in the first inning, was hit on his left calf by an 0-1 pitch in the second. He immediately charged the mound with his bat in his right hand. Beech was hit in both hands while attempting to defend himself, and catcher John Nathans was hit in the head coming to the defense of his teammate.
August 15, 200719 yr I remember when Offerman and Nomar were one of the best middle infields going. That was awesome.

August 16, 200719 yr What makes it even weirder to me is the guy who finally jumped in and stopped Offerman from doing further damage is Carl Everett, who belongs in a looney bin himself. What a weird story, good move to throw that psycho in jail.
August 16, 200719 yr Wow, it's always a shame to see incidents like this. I suppose I can understand a player getting worked up at being hit by a pitch but to come out swinging (literally) has the potential to really injury somebody.
