August 20, 200718 yr I missed this game, but from reading the posts it sounds awful. Yet when looking at the boxscore it's not awful. Yes, it's embarrasing to get swept at home 4 games by the Giants. But it was an 8-7 game, which on paper sounds exciting. I only see 1 error, but Olivo not being able to catch is no surprise. We had some offense, and it's nice to see Hermida add to his RBI total. Mitre having a bad game is no great surprise. The bullpen is taxed, and due to get worse with all the work they've had. Would it have been so awful if we had squeeked out a 9-8 win. Wins and losses don't mean so much at this point.
August 20, 200718 yr I was just listening to 790. We hit the 1000 strikeout mark today and Dan Uggla tried to turn a double play with 2 outs? Interesting.

August 21, 200718 yr It was a horrible game all around. I'm pretty pleased Hermida is giving a big "F U" to all the haters. Now if we can just start him more than 4 times since Aug 11th (am I missing some banged up injury here for one, secondly yes I like Cody vs lefties too, but this is getting is ridiculous with, thirdly, De Aza getting 9 starts, NINE!, in the same period). Maybe move him anywhere 2-4 in the lineup. That would be super. Love the 3rd best hitter on the team batting 6th-8th, half the time. This is going to be a DUH moment for Fredi when this finally happens. Maybe Hermida just needs to grow a gnarly beard like Youkilis to get recognized. Reason is out the door at this point. Vote for gnarly beard.

And if you want to understand why Hermida isn't played everyday just look at what he does when he is playing that isn't hitting.

Still no reason for Hermida to be 1) hitting 8th 2) seeing spot duty

And if you want to understand why Hermida isn't played everyday just look at what he does when he is playing that isn't hitting. He's better than Willingham. But it's kind of like, who cares? Both are excellent excellent hitters. I'm taking the OBP advantage with Hermida (.440 since the break!!!), but I can understand if you like the pop. Worst case scenario is, tied for 3rd. Longterm, no contest. The second part, huh? This kid doesn't need to be Adam LaRoche'd (early career) versus lefties. Maybe a drop in the order to 6th/7th versus the Hamels, Hills, and Francis' of the NL, but he needs to be batting 2-3-4 every game versus RHP and moderate/lower lefties. The kid is the missing piece of making the lineup unstoppable (Assuming we acquire a league average C and CF, which I mean just has to happen this offseason), and he needs to be put in a position to distribute punishment around the 2 core hitters so he can potentially develop faster. Not be (relatively) wasted on base with Olivo, Amezaga, spot starters, and the pitcher behind him. It's really simple. They finally got Uggla right, even if it's for the wrong reasons (De Aza).
August 21, 200718 yr the was the worst game I think I have ever seen from all aspects... Marlins, Giants, Umpires just an abortion of a game This game was simply just painful to watch from all sides. I'm generally optimistic about this team but after an outing like that it's hard to find many positives (Hermida was hitting well at least.) These are just series which are best to forget about and move on.
August 21, 200718 yr Glad it's bottoming out in August. Force a change, maybe even force the hand with a few callups. I doubt that, it might mean that they lose some time before arbitration. Loria doesn't want that, it might cost him a few thousand. :confused

August 21, 200718 yr I've become a Mitre skeptic. Sure hasn't been the same Mitre weve seen earlier this year, but considering what the Fish have to work with..well yea Spike is precisely right...outside of May, the man has sucked. Not really....Considering he is still the best pitcher the Marlins have thus far. Just because he proved to be one of the better arms of our injury ridden, headcase plagued rotation neither makes him a good pitcher nor a reliable starter down the road. Well to say he has sucked this year with some of the other characters on this team seems a little misdirected IMO. Nah, outside of a fluke month where most of his runs were unearned, he's sucked. His June ERA? 4.94. July? 5.20. August? 5.50 (and rising since that doesn't include today). That's brutal. For comparison's sake: VandenHurk had a 4.50 July ERA, and a 5.29 June. Even "good lord he's awful" Wes Obermueller managed a 5.54 ERA as a starter. By all means, let's get rid of the guy. I mean, he was the only pitcher in our rotation that had ANY glimpse of success at all this season. I think some of you are rather hasty with your Mitre-bashing, and have overlooked the fact that Mitre has already pitched 134 innings this season. Last year, he threw a total of 42. Surely the progressive inflation of his ERA has nothing to do with his arm tiring. I should also note that after pitching through March, April, and May, he had thrown 52 innings....a similar number to what his arm was used to from the season before.

A good to quite good pitcher should be able to give 180 innings a year. If said pitcher is unable to do so, and is not the victim of injury but rather the all too overused "arm fatigue" then that pitcher is not a worthwhile part of the staff.
August 21, 200718 yr So for a pitcher to be good by your standards, he needs to be able to pitch 180 innings regardless of the fact that he spent most of the previous season injured.... :mis2 ......rrrright......and he also needs to keep his ERA below 2.00, his K/9 above 11, make the All-Star Team, and win the CY Young. Lord have mercy on your rotation if you ever become a GM.
August 21, 200718 yr What do you guys expect when we have Hurk and Barone going for us every 5? or Olsen and Willis have sub-par years ( at least staying healthy). you cant win like that. We just got bit this year with injury and inconsistency... remember this is still a really young team. GIVE ME A BALLPARK ALL READY.

Lord have mercy on your rotation if you ever become a GM. I don't think said any of those shenanigans. A pitcher, to be termed "good or quite good" needs to throw 180 effective innings, barring real documented injury. The other stats paint a total picture, ERA, WHIP, K/9, BB/K, heck, even just plain old ball to strikes. 40 good innings doesn't make a pitcher great.
August 22, 200718 yr April/June/July/August: .318/.364/.439 against, 5.27 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 4.5 K/9 May: .212/.250/.253 against, 1.12 ERA, .92 WHIP, 6.5 K/9 This is Mitre for the year. He has proven to be one of the rare examples of where picking and choosing stats gives you a much better picture of the player than his actual cumulative stats, because his month of May has alot of pull and really distorts his season totals.

I'll take that split anyday but I'll leave it to Spike to point out that Mitre is the true problem on this team, outside of Olivo and Willingham
August 22, 200718 yr Mitre sucks, the fact that Olivo sucks doesnt detract from that. How about since June 1st, Mitre has allowed 4 or more earned runs in 7 of his 14 starts(5 or more in 6 of 14).
