VandenHurk vs Smoltz 7:05 PM

From floridamarlins.com:

Florida's starting pitchers have been roughed up for three straight games. So with the bullpen working overtime of late, the Marlins are in need of a starter to log some valuable innings on Tuesday night.

Rick VandenHurk, the 22-year-old rookie from the Netherlands, gets the starting nod in the second game against the Braves at Dolphin Stadium.

After being routed on Monday night, the Marlins now have dropped four straight and 12 of 14.

The last time the Marlins won was with VandenHurk on the mound. The right-hander gave up one run in five innings on Thursday at St. Louis. He threw 73 pitches.

Florida is keeping close tabs of VandenHurk's total innings. After logging 25 total in the Minor Leagues in 2006 -- he was battling back from Tommy John elbow surgery -- he is up to 67 1/3 innings with the Marlins. Additionally, he tossed 65 2/3 innings in the Minor Leagues this season.

The Braves are turning to veteran John Smoltz, who has gone 12-6 with a 3.01 ERA. Initially, the Braves were going with Buddy Carlyle in this game and Smoltz on Wednesday night. But manager Bobby Cox switched the two right-handers.

Smoltz has won two straight decisions.

Pitching matchup

FLA: RHP Rick VandenHurk (4-4, 6.95 ERA)

VandenHurk provided a big boost to the club in his last start, giving up one run in five innings, and he was the winning pitcher on the day the Marlins snapped their season-long eight-game losing streak. VandenHurk has not gone more than 5 2/3 innings in seven starts, when he lasted six innings in a no-decision against the Reds. This will be VandenHurk's third meeting with the Braves. He collected a win on June 5 in the second game of a doubleheader at Atlanta.

ATL: RHP John Smoltz (12-6, 3.01 ERA)

Smoltz has won consecutive starts for the first time since May 24, and his previously ailing right shoulder hasn't bothered him for six straight starts. He's showing great command with both his slider and split-finger, and consequently, completing a number of damage-free innings. While completing eight innings during both of his past two starts, the 40-year-old veteran has shown no sign of fatigue. He is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA in his past four starts.

Players to watch

Braves catcher Brian McCann belted a grand slam on Monday night, his second in seven days, and fourth of his career. Matt Diaz, who traditionally hits Florida well, had a home run and four hits (with two doubles) in the series opener.

question: how did Henricus become rick?

A better question is how D?az became "DYE-az".

grandfather wanted to be american when they came here from spain, so they said die-az to make themselves american.

but i bet he doesn't start tonight, bobby will likely put harris in to leadoff.

The team could really use another quality start from the Dutchman. Unfortunately, even if Vanden Hurk pitches relatively well, he is likely not going more than 5 (maybe 6) innings. That means more work for an already taxed bullpen, but limiting his innings is obviously the right thing to do (he often limits himself with his high pitch counts anyway). Given our luck with arms this year, I hope we are not tempting fate with Vanden Hurk--though with all the attrition it's not like we have much of choice. :pray
