Posting other numbers has nothing to do with the fact that saying 'highest OPS on the team' when that came in 60 ABs, is completely meaningless. He could have 1.000 across the baord and it still wouldn't change the fact that using 60 ABs to mean anything is dumb. Definition of SSS. I wouldn't do it, in a 7 game series. Pitching is always at a premium and he has the 4th most innings on the squad, he is going to have to start at least one game if he was in the World Series.

Well I will disagree about the SSS in this instance. On your other point, I didn't say he shouldn't start a game. This would be in a game that he is not starting, would you DH him? (Obviously they would start him in a home game... if possible)
October 2, 200718 yr No. Who knows if you would need to caddy him with a starter who is way off or something in a game just to survive. Your pitching is at an absolute premium, I don't risk that for the chance you catch lightning in a bottle for a maximum of 4 games.
October 2, 200718 yr The guy can rake, but no. I also saw him in college and he was fun to watch but you dont take that risk. He is a pitcher before he is a hitter obviously and you dont want to run the risk that he is hurt doing things that other players on the team are paid to do. He can hit but those other guys can't do what he can do on the mound.

I believe he counts as one player - if the Diamondbacks want him to hit, they start the game with no DH and go the entire game without one.

October 2, 200718 yr you absolutely do not do this - however, you do slate him to start at chase field putting him in as a DH would put melvin on the fast track to losing some of his position players and even though owings does have some real hitting potential and definitely some pop - right now he's doing it as a pitcher - in the NL pitchers get pitched differently than a DH would - also they would use his 60 ABs and scout the hell out of him in a game as important as the WS - he'd have to make some serious adjustments at the plate and hasn't had the experience as a batter to do it on the fly
October 2, 200718 yr Not when he is a pitcher, in the playoffs. It'd hurt more then it'd help. I like the idea of trying to get him a home start though. That obviously makes sense (although I don't know his H/R splits). I don't know a ton about the Diamondbacks, but I'd be willing to bet Tony Clark is their DH.

October 2, 200718 yr I was talking H/R splits in regards to pitching, if he is better at home, then that coupled with the chance he is probably going to be the best 9th place hitter in the matchup means you definitely pitch him at home. If thats not the case, his bat doesn't mean enough during the course of one game to justify manipulating the rotation to get him a home start.

October 2, 200718 yr home: 4-5 3.81 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) - 2 CG, 1 shutout - 87 innings / 85 hits - 10 HR allowed - 62 SO / 27 BB road; 4-3 4.96 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) - 65 IP / 61 hits - 10 HR allowed - 44 SO / 23 BB it seems he throws a little bit better at home - although watching this guy he's pretty streaky - had one of his best performances on the road against pittsburgh after having his start bumped up this past week - i don't think it's the where he pitches as much as it is the when he pitches
